The USS Hannibal was an Ambassador-class Federation starship in service during the 24th century. The ship was named after the Carthaginian General Hannibal who led elephants over the Alps to attack Rome. The Ambassador-class Hannibal was commissioned by Starfleet for an extended survey of the Gamma Quadrant.
In 2370, the Hannibal was being built at the Okana Shipyards in the Bajor system as one of the first building contracts taken since the end of the Cardassian Occupation. At first shipyard director Amkot Groell thought Starfleet was giving the Bajorans a cast-off design, but soon realized that even after half a century in service the Ambassador-class was still an excellent, and modern design.
Starfleet sent a shipment of antimatter to Bajor, but the shipment was hijacked by terrorists. Commander Benjamin Sisko, Jadzia Dax, and Constable Odo retrieved the antimatter, and the ship was launched on her shakedown cruise soon afterwards. The launch was marred by the suicide of Director Amkot just after the ship had lifted off. (DS9 novel: Antimatter)
