Design[]
Neuras is an older ishkia gentleman with white hair and a thick mustache. He wears a long-sleeved shirt with blue and white stripes and a red scarf around his neck, reminiscent of the marinière style worn by the French Navy. He drapes a long coat over his shoulders like a cape, keeping his arms and wings free. One set of wings folds across his abdomen, while the other rests freely by his side. Along with this, he wears knee-length shorts with matching sandals.
Personality[]
The ishkias are considered a highly intelligent tribe, often holding positions as scholars and clergymen. Neuras is no exception; hailed as a genius engineer and born into a noble family, he received the best education available. However, his personality is exceptionally eccentric and quirky, to the point that even his own family views him as an incorrigible weirdo. Neuras is also a relentless workaholic. For example, he was once engaged to a nobleman's daughter, but his intense dedication to his work caused him to neglect his fiancée. By the time he remembered she existed, she had already broken off the engagement and left him.
Profile[]
Originally an engineer working in the Royal Capital, Neuras' eccentricities and unconventional research drew condemnation from the Sanctist Church, which branded him a heretic. Despite this, his talents caught the attention of the royal family, who hired him as a court engineer. Neuras is fiercely loyal to the royal family, deeply indebted to them for recognizing and believing in his abilities.
Neuras confides in the protagonist that he became the engineer he is today after meeting an elderly ishkia inventor, an eccentric figure in his own right. This inventor showed Neuras an ancient relic, which sparked a lifelong obsession with relics and their possibilities. When the inventor passed away, he left both his research and the relic to Neuras, further fueling his passion for innovation and invention.
As a court engineer, Neuras was tasked by the king with designing a gauntlet runner for the prince. Though he initially followed the blueprint provided, he eventually began making unauthorized modifications, drawing on royal funds, and, after the prince's disappearance, his own personal resources, to enhance the gauntlet runner, much to Hulkenberg's horror.
Neuras once dreamed of creating a flying gauntlet runner that did not rely on magla for flight, but his experiments failed, leading to his demotion after the prince's disappearance. He withdrew from society, utilizing a large sewer as his personal workshop, where he stored and continued to work on the royal gauntlet runner in secret.
When the protagonist joins the Tournament for the Throne alongside Strohl and Hulkenberg, the team was tasked with obtaining transport, angling for a carriage due to their lack of funds and their reputation with an elda as a leader. Hulkenberg visits Neuras in his workshop, hoping he can provide a carriage, as she recalls he had once been commissioned to create a custom carriage for the prince. Initially, Neuras refuses, claiming to be too busy, but Hulkenberg notices him acting unusually flustered.
She discovers that the "carriage" Neuras was commissioned to build was, in fact, a gauntlet runner, an asset typically too expensive for ordinary citizens to acquire. She decides to requisition it for the competition, reasoning that the tournament is ultimately for the prince's benefit, as they seek a cure for him. Upon learning that the prince is still alive, Neuras agrees to help pilot and maintain the gauntlet runner throughout the tournament, driven by his own desire to help save the prince. Unbeknownst to the team, he continues experimenting with flight mechanics on the gauntlet runner, ultimately succeeding in creating the first gauntlet runner capable of true mechanical flight without magic.
During a bonding moment, Neuras reveals to the protagonist that the government once approached him to participate in the controversial igniter experiments involving the Magnus brothers, Fidelio and Basilio. As a court engineer from a wealthy noble family, he did not need the money and refused on ethical grounds. Still, he felt guilty for never openly opposing the experiments despite knowing about them, leading him to immerse himself in his work as a distraction from his guilty conscience.
Following the defeat of Louis Guiabern, Neuras is appointed chief engineer of the Kingdom Infrastructure Bureau under the new king.
