History[]
Mega Man Battle Network 3[]
When Lan Hikari is asked to obtain the Forbidden Program called "Giga Freeze", which is able to freeze Alpha in case it awakens, MegaMan travels to the Undernet and has to defeat several ranked Navis to reach "S", the Rank 1 Navi that protects the program. After defeating Rank 2, MistMan (White version) or BowlMan (Blue version), he discovers the Navi is called Serenade and is located in the server of the Undernet. MegaMan finds the server in the Ura Inn, where Serenade's voice can be heard and says that if he wants the Forbidden Program, he must be a "Chosen One" to hold it, or the program would freeze him forever. MegaMan is able to take it and leaves, and Serenade is surprised to see that another Navi is able to hold it. Later, MegaMan tries to use the program against Bass while he was taking Alpha after DrillMan's defeat, but it sees him as the other "Chosen One" mentioned by Serenade and Bass is able to stop the program.
After completing the game, the Secret Area can be entered, a cyberworld deep within the Undernet server. MegaMan will have to defeat the guardians of each area to move forward, DarkMan and JapanMan. Both Navis were defeated by Serenade in the past and have abandoned their lives to become guardians of the Secret Area.[3] They both eventually fall to Lan and MegaMan.
Serenade recognizes MegaMan's power for being able to defeat JapanMan and DarkMan, and says the source of his power is mercy, and he wins because he loves and respect his enemies. After defeat, Serenade reveals they fought against Bass in the past, winning after a battle that lasted days. MegaMan then receives Rank 1.
A side-quest will be available after logging out and then returning to the Secret Area, a time attack against several Alpha Navis with an Extra Folder. The player can obtain the Battle Chip Serenade S (White version) or Dark Aura A (Blue version) if a new record is set for all Navis.

Serenade's introduction in Legend of Network.
Serenade appears in UraNet 5 as a voice-only with a black textbox. Serenade is aware of the Trojan Horse crisis in the world, however they refuse to give Rockman the "Giga Freeze Piece" (ギガフリーズのカケラ Giga Furīzu no Karera) so he can extinguish the fires at the Ministry of Science without taking care of some rogue UraNet residents, as the UraNet is a land of give-and-take. Rockman tells Serenade he does not have the time, but Blues and HatMan appear and inform them that they have taken care of the rogues so Rockman does not have to. Serenade states they do not wish to see the cyberworld collapse and wishes Rockman luck before leaving.

MegaMan NT Warrior manga[]
Battle Story MegaMan NT Warrior[]
Serenade had three brief appearances in the manga, being first seen in chapter 49 witnessing Alpha's return.
When another Bass appeared from Bass and attacked the original and ShadowMan, Serenade saved them from the attack.
Serenade last appeared after MegaMan and Lan caused critical damage to Alpha, warning the duo to hurry and escape, as if Alpha is deleted, the whole cyberworld would collapse. MegaMan tells the Navi to take Lan away while he stays behind to protect them from Alpha's incoming explosion.
Abilities[]

Serenade's Navi mark
Being the only NetNavi (except for MegaMan) confirmed to have defeated Bass, Serenade is among the most powerful Navis in the Mega Man Battle Network series. They have some very unusual attacks.
- Sonic Boom (ソニックブーム Sonikku Būmu):
If Serenade is able to move up or down, any attacks that hit them will be reflected off their raiments creating a sonic boom down the row. Sonic Boom is capable of reflecting any attack which does not decrease HP directly (e.g., poison, Balance). Serenade can use Sonic Boom at any moment except when they can not move vertically or when they are performing Holy Shock. For this reason, it is best to fight Serenade by restricting their movement, either by breaking or stealing panels.
- Saint Light (セイントライト Seinto Raito):
Serenade fires an orb that slowly zigzags across the battlefield. The orb can hit through Invis, so other defenses should be utilized.
- Holy Shock (ホーリーショック Hōrī Shokku):
Serenade stands at the front of their area and puts their palm forward. Panels will flash and damage the player if they're standing on them, and also a gust of wind will push the player backwards. This may also crack some panels. If the player has increased their area size, Holy Shock will be spread out over a wider area and give the player more opportunities to avoid taking damage.
- "Raiments Shield":
In the manga, it is shown that their raiments can reflect any incoming projectile attacks. In Bass' version, it is capable of even deflecting sword attacks (which is close-combat and physical).

Etymology[]
Serenade's name is pronounced in Japanese using the French pronunciation, "Sere-nahd" (セレナード, "Serenaado" in Katakana), instead of the English pronunciation, "Sere-naid."[Citation needed]
Serenade's relation to Bass is seen within their names as both Bass/Forte and Serenade are musical terms. Serenade is also a gentle song, while Bass/Forte are strong and loud.
Design[]

Serenade concept art.
Character designer Yuji Ishihara designed Serenade to represent light, the complete opposite of Bass. Their main color is white and was given a skin tone and clothes that would highlight a diving mystique. They always have a smug expression. Ishihara notes that Serenade's Navi mark stands for a certain word. What that word is was not disclosed, but as the king of the Undernet (Ura Internet), it is possibly derived from the letter "U". [6]
Tying in further to their divine theme, these raiments are based off of that of tenne, being the flowing and arching scarf like cloths that adorn heavenly divinities and beings in Buddhist art and legend.
Serenade is the only dark-skinned NetNavi in the Mega Man Battle Network series.
Gender[]
Serenade is considered genderless. They have been described by writer Masakazu Eguchi as being soft, tolerant, with a compassionate heart, ultimate strength by combining masculine and feminine parts; the ultimate existence transcending gender.[7] However, different sources and media have referred to Serenade as one gender or another:
- In the English version of Mega Man Battle Network 3, Serenade is addressed as "he".
- In the Viz English NT Warrior manga, Serenade is addressed as "she" in the initial chapter, but is addressed as "he" in the times after. Also, Serenade’s title is translated as "Lord of the Undernet" instead.
- In Forte - Time of Reunion - special, Netto and Enzan described Serenade as "having a pretty face, but inside is an old man".
- In the English Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection Character Card, Serenade is addressed as "they".
- In the Mega Man Battle Network Official Complete Works, Serenade is referred to as a male.
- In Medarot S: Unlimited Nova, the gender of the Medarot based on Serenade is marked as Neutral.

Trivia[]
- Fans theorized that Mamoru Ura is Serenade's operator, as not only is he the administrator of the Undernet, he has Serenade's Navi mark on his wheelchair. This was later confirmed by Masakazu Eguchi.[8]
- In a guidebook interview, the devs revealed that Serenade was planned to be included in Mega Man Battle Network 6, but was scrapped due to limited ROM space.[9]
- There's a poster of Serenade in Higsby's shop in the Blue Moon version of Mega Man Battle Network 4.
- In Battle Network 3's game data, Alpha and Beta versions for Serenade exist but are unused in the final game. Alpha has 2200 HP and Beta has 2400 HP, both also drop 5000z.
