Voice[]

99% sure he's voiced by Nicholas Boulton, best known as Hawke in Dragon Age 2. Can't confirm it though, but if someone has the means that's a good place to start looking. JakePT 14:47, March 10, 2012 (UTC)

OK, but if it's that important maybe a page on acceptable sources might not be a bad idea, like over at Wikipedia? (Because your average new contributor—including people like me who contribute to many different projects on Wikia, each with their own little ways—is not likely to randomly scan a whole bunch of talk-pages for clues, whereas a nice clear policy page can work wonders.) lancer, new guy has a point. we may have accepted sources on a case by case basis but we really need to have delineations for -established- valid/invalid sources. people kept linking to IMDB over and over again despite being told it's invalid over and over again, and this proves that the few people who -can- read are willing to look for wiki policies on the matter. which, as you pointed, are nowhere convenient. trawling the hundreds and hundreds of talkpages specifically looking for which sources are dictated to be valid/invalid in a single go is not exactly newbie friendly.

for starters,

wikipedia (lax sourcing controls. if some online "notable" rag says so, it's already good in their books. but not here.)
imdb (terrible sourcing moderation, virtually nonexistent) - although if VA is 9001% confirmed beyond reasonable doubt we link to IMDB in the char boxes. ex. mark meer and jen hale.
unconfirmed sources. by this, it means those unlisted in the valid sources.

previous bioware folks. they may have severed ties with the company or whatever. ex. if chris l'etoile, former ME writer, talks about things when he was still writer for ME, valid. if he starts talking about projects where he has no involvement but talks about like he has (not bloody likely but let's just go with the example), invalid.

pronouncements by confirmed people related to the franchise but not directly related to their line of involvement - same reasoning as above. VA involvement, especially the one-offs, is usually just limited to their characters so we shouldn't be expecting gameplay-related news or the like from them unless there's a very compelling reason to do so.

the games, the official tie-in materials (external sourcing needed only to prove a point but if said point is readily accessible to anyone with a copy of the disputed medium it's unnecessary)

if trying to prove coats = boulton, credits must show unequivocally that "Major Coats = Nick Boulton", not "Nick Boulton = Additional Voices". we'll need other sources then.
list of ancillary sites set up by bioware for their projects, like masseffectparagonlost.com^{or barnard plim's conspiracy accountability league blog}
bug confirmation/disputed info is another matter - still requires 3 users as per policy regardless of external sources UNLESS word of god intervenes below.

ME official blog/twitter

BSN dev posts - those by guys marked "bioware developer" above their avatars (obviously they should be involved in the mass effect franchise since it's not the only IP bioware is developing)

list of confirmed twitter/facebook/whatever socialmedia accounts go here, with names added and deleted depending on their current involvement with bioware - deleted should be filed under "conditionally valid"

at the absolute minimum, the main players from dev to writers to cast. people from the business end of things too (producers and the like) if deemed relevant enough.
casey hudson, mac walters, john dombrow, patrick weekes, etc
probably a good idea to separate devs, writers and VAs from each other since we tend to go with devs and writers first before the people they contracted to deliver the story.

some respectable publication not known to be incorrect when it comes to ME-related news (i don't read em much, someone else has to insert stuff here)

a confirmed source linking to the unconfirmed source in a post concerning unconfirmed source's role in the franchise (ex. MEofficial twitter: @anthonyskordi voiced leviathan)

in case of video evidence, the personalities involved should be shown stating or doing in no uncertain terms the things they were cited with. ex. mark meer interviewed where he says he voiced all the vorcha and the hanar). for relative unknowns, still subject to previous point.

in case of unconfirmed source confirmation, add them to the list of valid sources with a note describing why.

this is not by any means an exhaustive or even definitive list but should provide an idea of what is or is not acceptable. i won't even claim to be correct in my assessment, but this is more or less what i determined to be in play in the months i edited here.

if the problem is the mutability of sources, it's really not. we adjust the MOS all the time in case of clarifications, ambiguous wording, and unexpected occurrences, it's no different than this.

He replaces Javik, if you don't have 'From Ashes' DLC installed. No idea if he replaces any any other squadmates you may have lost. As for further DLC, if the ending is extended or changed, he would make perfect sense as an additional party member. - Goldenboy666 04:15, March 17, 2012 (UTC)

First Name[]

He has a first name, I am sure of it. I remember seeing it in one of the datapads on the last level, it is definitely in the level Priority: Earth iirc. Unfortunately I cannot get to an xbox atm as mine crapped out on me and the disc tray broke, but if somebody can do some digging into all the available pickups/datapads on the final mission, I can assure you, with enough research, you will find it. I can't remember what it was exactly, I'm pretty sure it was five letters though, something like Henry, or Frank...

I promise you I am not making this up, I definitely remember seeing it, it was a message to Mr. Coats from somebody like Anderson, or an ambiguously named Captain of sorts, and on it was his rank [Major] and his full name [XXXX Coats]. coats VA verification[]

i'm going out on a limb here and say that for all intents and purposes it is indeed nick boulton who voices coats. 1year+ after the fact.

- someone looked over a year ago as attested by the timestamp in the signature in one of the comments above, see User:Morlan's sig. ms. livingstone's twitter wasn't confirmed then, but it is confirmed now. mystery guy's question apparently on public record back then.

- there's a tech explanation somewhere establishing why users with underscores in their names get borked by twitter's systems and how such users' past tweets automatically redirect to their owners' new names, though frankly the exact workings is beyond even my understanding. suffice it to say that we can be sure twitter redirects us to the right guy.

this is a case of now-confirmed bioware twitter account linking to VA account who explicitly claims to voice the character. too roundabout and a bit on the tenuous side, but just about enough to pass confirmation thresholds.
