The ship steward offers to give it a go, and the eggheads reluctantly agree, thinking he will certainly fail when their superior minds could not figure it out. The steward realizes that it is a treadmill that moves backwards at exactly the same speed the occupant attempts to move forward that prevents one from reaching the opposite door, and thus the Martians agree to trade and the steward becomes the ambassador to Mars.
