Synopsis for "War of the Iron Men Part 4"

While his friends and staff back home are arrested to account for his illegal activities, Stark continues to wreak havoc in Transia. He returns to Nina's farm to find his ship stolen, but resupplies anyway with an old set of backup armor launched from his orbiting satellite. He tracks down where the Iron Men are being remote-controlled from, where Radioactive Man has already arrived to confront the operators, the same American mercenaries Iron Man faced at his company earlier that week. Chen Lu thinks the mercenaries and Iron Man are there as part of an American operation. He gets in the way of Iron Man attempting to find out who's really footing the bill, killing all the mercenaries before Stark can stop him. Their fight is interrupted by the arrival of a new Titanium Man and Crimson Dynamo, there on behalf of the Russian government to make a statement about protecting Transia from West and East interests alike.

Meanwhile, Doom quickly integrates the stolen Stark tech into an army of Doombots. According to his plans, Transian refugees flood into Latveria pleading for him to protect them from their oppressors. With the pretense established and his war machines ready, Doom invades Transia.

Solicit Synopsis

It's all-out armored action, and whoever wins, turns out they lose: As the true Big Bad stands ready to swoop in and claim the spoils!

Notes

  • This story is set between Iron Man (Vol. 3) #50, the debut of the Model 20 "Tin Man" armor, and Iron Man (Vol. 3) #55, where Stark reveals his secret identity to the public. At this time Iron Man is operating under the cover story of being Tony Stark's bodyguard.
    • Stark communicates with the J.A.R.V.I.S. AI in this issue set at a point in time long before its introduction in the comics. The more contemporary AI companion for this story would have been Friday.
    • At this time, Iron Man had recently faced Radioactive Man who had been hired as a bodyguard for Ty Stone in Iron Man (Vol. 3) #38. Chen Lu returned to being an agent of the Chinese government between then and his next major appearance joining the Thunderbolts in New Thunderbolts #3.
  • Stark identifies the old model armor he summons from his satellite as the "Model XXIII Mark I". It is actually the Model 16 "Rennaissance Armor", the previous primary suit Stark wore prior to the time when this story takes place. When he dons the suit, his speech bubbles also gain the red border and gear shape associated with most of his appearances at the time the suit was used.
