Ring Shot is a Special Game in Mario Tennis Open.

Gameplay[]

Ring Shot is very similar to the Mario Tennis for Nintendo 64 mode of the same name: The player's character has to hit the ball into rings while being assisted by another character on the other side of the court. When the ball passes through a ring, the player earns points, more specifically Ring Points. At its smallest, a ring is worth five Ring Points, but each time the ring grows, its point value is decreased by one until the ring becomes its largest possible size and is worth only one point. Combos of Ring Points can be earned from hitting the ball into multiple rings in one stroke. When the player achieves a certain number of points within a certain amount of time, varying per difficulty level, the minigame finishes. The four difficulty levels and their respective objective and corresponding partner are as follows:

  • Novice Rings - The player must earn 200 Ring Points within one minute. They are partnered with Yoshi.
  • Amateur Rings - The player must earn 350 Ring Points within two minutes. They are partnered with Peach.
  • Pro Rings - The player must earn 500 ring points within three minutes. They are partnered with Luigi.
  • Ring Shot Challenge - The player must earn as many ring points as possible within three minutes. They are partnered with Donkey Kong.

The rings are initially vertical and close to the net, but in the third and challenge levels, the rings are higher up and sometimes placed horizontally or slanted towards the player.

There are a few unlockables associated with the minigame. If the minigame is completed on Pro Rings difficulty, Baby Peach is unlocked. Additionally, if the player obtains 800 Ring Points in Ring Shot Challenge, they unlock a Princess Peach costume, and if they then collect 700 points in Ring Shot Challenge using a different character, the player unlocks a Princess Daisy costume.
