The Clockout Blow is a new weapon from Mario & Luigi: Brothership. It is used for the Special Attack of the same name which Mario has access to, although he has to spend 12 Special Points for its use.

Description[]

The clock itself resembles the Plus Clocks that can be grabbed in Super Mario Galaxy 2 to increase time. It has a cyan frame with a single red arrow pointing upwards and a button on its top. When Mario hits the switch, the scene turns monochromatic while the Bros. retain their colour, and everything moves slowly.

Procedure[]

Mario begins the attack by pulling the Clockout Blow itself out and hitting the switch. Afterwards, he and Luigi run around the enemies. Mario and Luigi then use their hammers to strike the target, eventually knocking him into the air, where the Bros. repeatedly smash the target four times before slamming him down into the battlefield.

Striking at least once successfully will net an Okay! rating; a Good! rating requires four successful strikes, then Great! requires seven, with the target getting knocked into the air after eight successful hits. Nailing the five subsequent strikes will net an Excellent! rating.

If the player pushes the wrong button (for example: if Mario runs at the target with his hammer drawn, but the player presses B), the last five hits will be voided, but the first eight can continue. Additionally, if the player targets a flying enemy, Mario and Luigi will target a ground-based enemy instead, if there is one; if there is none, the attack is voided altogether.

Behind the Scenes[]

Etymology[]

The Clockout Blow's name could come from the term "flash," which is either a verb meaning "to suddenly move quickly" (as Mario and Luigi move quickly) or "to make/be visible briefly" (as the Bros. are only briefly visible if at all) or a noun meaning "short burst of time" (as Mario and Luigi cross a big distance in a short amount of time from the enemy's perspective).

Nomenclature[]

The Japanese name of the Clockout Blow is a transliteration of the English name "Flash Clock" (Furasshu Kurokku, written フラッシュ クロック). In Chinese, it has the name "Flash Time" (Shǎnguāng Shíjiān, written 闪光时间) although this could refer to its associated attack rather than the weapon itself. Spanish refers to it as the "Lightning Clock" (Reloj Relámpago) referencing how Mario and Luigi go "lightning fast" during the attack. In Portuguese, the attack's name is Golpe do Cuco, literally translating as "blow of/with/about/from cuckoo"; this could refer to cuckoo clocks. Italian refers to it as "Urto Instantaneao" (literally "instant hit"), though as with the Chinese and Portuguese names, this could refer to the attack. Its French name, Chronorouste, is formed from Greek khrónos ("time"; written χρόνος), and French rouste ("hit"). Its Dutch name, Extra Tijd, means "overtime," literally "extra time." It is referred to as a "flashing clock" in Korean (Beonjjeok Sigye, written 번쩍시계).

Trivia[]

  • Chuck uses a similar ability for his Rage Chili-fueled Special Skill named Speed of Light in Angry Birds Epic. However, the Clockout Blow goes for more hits.
  • The name may also be a reference to the Stop Watch item from Paper Mario 64 and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, as well as the Clockout Special Attack from the latter, as both function similarly to Clockout Blow, being that it slows or stops time to allow multiple attacks on an enemy.
