“ | You heroes pretend to be society's guardians. For generations, you pretended not to see those you couldn't protect and swept their pain under the rug. It's tainted everything you've built. That means your system's all rotten from the inside with maggots crawling out. It all builds up, little by little, over time. You've got the common trash, all too dependent on being protected. And the brave guardians who created the trash that need coddling. It's a corrupt, vicious cycle. Everything I've witnessed, this whole system you've built, has always rejected me. Now I'm ready to reject it. That's why I destroy. That's why I took this power for myself. Simple enough? I don't care if you understand. That's what makes us heroes and villains. | „ |
~ Tomura voicing his disdain for society |
“ | I've got no need for One For All. Did you think you had everything under control? Unlike those flip-flopping screw ups, my heart ain't wavering. Everything I witnessed in this world of ours led to the existence of that house. As Tomura Shigaraki and Tenko Shimura, I've got just one hope. The destruction of everything stemming from that house. That's the only thing that's gonna save me, hero. | „ |
~ Tomura Shigaraki rejects All For One's control |
Tenko Shimura, more infamously known as Tomura Shigaraki (in Japanese: 死柄木弔, Shigaraki Tomura), is the main antagonist of the My Hero Academia franchise, serving as the arch-nemesis/dark counterpart of its protagonist, Izuku Midorya aka Deku.
Starting off as the pathetic apprentice to the Japanese underworld's shadow ruler, All For One, Tomura was the leader of the League of Villains, yet relied on All For One's resources to be even able to do anything. However, upon All For One's defeat the hands of All Might in Kamino Ward and his eventual arrest, Tomura realizes it's about time he steps up if he wants to become the ultimate Symbol of Fear. Learning conviction from the Hero Killer Stain and leadership form his rival Overhaul before dismantling his Yakuza, Tomura seeks to destroy all that he hates to let his fellow League build a new world, amassing more resources, be it All For One's quirk, the Meta Liberation Army or Gigantomachia's loyalty. Really a pawn for All for One, Tomura eventually rejects his former master's attempts to control him and sets off to destroy society by sinking all of Japan to the ground.
He is voiced by Kōki Uchiyama and Arisa Sekine as a child in Japanese and Eric Vale and Emily Fajardo as a child in English.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- While he himself is nasty, he isn't just some villain wanting to destroy and has a load of moral complexity, in which his desire to destroy comes from a dissatisfaction of society and how its fragile sense of security leads to the rise of many people and also rejected Tomura when he was just a helpless orphan on the street. He also wishes for his fellow League members, who he considers close friends, to build a new world after he is done, one that will suit their needs. Generally, he seeks to be a hero to Villain society as a whole.
- He also has a nasty Freudian Excuse in which all was organized by All For One: once a boy named Tenko Shimura, had a horrid childhood where his father abused him for desiring to be a hero, and All for One even secretly replaced his quirk with Decay to which its activation leads to Tenko accidentally killing his family when he was just 5 years old, and was ignored by bystanders passing by when he was just an orphan on the streets, leading to All For One to take advantage of him and raise him to be an evil supervillain desiring to destroy.
- While originally committing evil acts due to childishly impulsive tendencies, once Tomura gets a grip and attains a conviction, he stops committing impulsive crimes while being pitted against villains who are even crueler than Tomura, like Overhaul who uses his men as pawns and build a criminal empire by vivisecting a 5-year-old girl, and All For One who commits countless cruel actions for the sake of fulfilling his childish fantasy of being the most evil human being on the planet.
- While originally a mere childish and pathetic apprentice for All For One who relies heavily on his resources, when Tomura is faced with a time where All For One can no longer help him now that he is imprisoned in Tartarus, he finds his conviction to destroy, becoming a dangerously competent supervillain, even more so than All For One whose control Tomura even rejects.
- Even in his debut as just a pathetic manchild, Tomura had excellent analytic skills, using this when he faced the UA teacher and Pro-Hero, Eraser Head.
- He had the Vanguard Action Squad attack the UA training camp and kidnap Katsuki Bakugo to shake people's faith in Hero Society. This also started the chain of events that led to All Might's retirement and the end of the Symbol of Peace.
- When Overhaul disrespects Tomura and the League by calling them overhyped, and then destroys Mr. Compress' arm and kills Magne, he plants Twice and Himiko Toga in Overhaul's Yakuza to be his agents in dismantling his rival's organization (also carefully avoiding outright telling them to betray him so they can get pass Nemoto's quirk), looting his Quirk destroying bullets and then giving delicious karma to Overhaul as he destroys his hands to render him quirkless and let him live so that he can see the League rise.
- Killed off Creature Rejection Clan, a racist cult who discriminated against Heteromorph's, which could make one cheer for him and the League.
- When faced with the Meta Liberation Army's declaration of war against the League and Gigantomachia's lack of loyalty towards Tomura, he ends up siccing them against each other so that he can lead the charge against the Liberation Army.
- Upon reconnecting with his past, he ends up destroying any physical and mental limitations to his Quirk and achieving its full power, earning the loyalty of both the Meta Liberation Army and Gigantomachia, earning the former as well as All For One's resources as he transforms the League from a ragtag bunch of aimless terrorists to a mighty criminal empire spanning Japan known as the Paranormal Liberation Front.
- Willingly undergoes a painful procedure for months on end to inherit all the quirks All For One left for him, all while laughing.
- Through sheer willpower, resurrects himself and unleashes a destructive wave that kills countless heroes and incapacitates several more.
- Manages to control his decay wave and spares the High-End Nomu's, unleashing them on the many heroes that come to attack him.
- Manages to outsmart Star and Stripes in their fight, decaying under the ground to avoid being blown up while using his Nomu as a decoy before having the Nomu explode to fend off the pilots and successfully defeating Star, who was the biggest threat to his plans alongside Deku.
- When All For One's influence in his attempts to take control of him leads to him becoming mentally unstable, Tomura uses said insanity to break free from All For One's control and show that he is his villain rather than just a pawn.
- Baits Deku into destroying the fingers of one of his hands so that he could claim Danger Sense beforehand, leaving him vulnerable to Tomura's attacks and giving him the fight for his life.
- When All For One makes an unexpected post-mortem return to possess Tomura, an opportunity that was only unlocked due to sheer luck, Tomura gladly helps Deku and the other One for All users to destroy his body and defeat All For One for good, and compared to his master who in both his deaths, dies a screaming mess, Tomura accepts his death with dignity as he admits that he was a crying kid deep down and wishes Deku to do his best with a genuine smile of encouragement, even if refusing to redeem as he asks Deku to tell Spinner he fought to destroy until the end.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- Invades UA Academy to kill dozens of students training to be heroes in his debut, and nearly kills Tsuyu Asui and Eraser Head.
- Unleashes several Nomus on civilian areas, killing many innocent people.
- Threatens to disintegrate Izuku and then kill everyone in the mall, beginning with the children, should he alert anybody of his presence.
- Kidnaps Bakugo to indoctrinate him to the League.
- Sponsors dangerous terrorists like Nine to do whatever they want, and then kill them should they become liabilities.
- Wages the destructive Paranormal Liberation War that engulfs & destroys numerous areas of Japan, leading to countless casualties be they hero or civilian. Shigaraki personally destroys a city that sees many civilians and heroes disintegrated onscreen.
- Attempts to destroy all of Japan using his Quirk to disintegrate its foundations with very clear indications he is going to move onto the rest of the world so that Tomura can destroy society itself and rebuild a world that's more fit for the League.
