Kanako Yasaka is a major antagonist in the bullet hell series Touhou Project, serving as the main antagonist of Mountain of Faith and the posthumous overarching antagonist of Subterranean Animism, Unidentified Fantastic Object, and Touhou Hisoutensoku. She is a divine spirit and the goddess of the Moriya Shrine, residing at it with its de facto ruler Suwako Moriya and the wind priestess Sanae Kochiya. She is a shinto goddess of wind and rain and the future goddess of scientific innovation.
What makes her Magnificent?[]
- She's a highly intelligent goddess who is capable of coming up with quick plans with chessmaster level manipulation.
- She's a skilled fighter who has proven herself to be a competent force in battle with her danmaku, spell cards, reality warping, metaphysical hax, and control over wind and rain.
- She holds no hostility towards those around her and is consistently polite with an intimidating and suspicious yet pleasant and reliable demeanor.
- Despite the fact she and Suwako are technically opposing gods and have been known to argue from time to time, both of them have a mutual respect towards each other and are actually good friends.
- She's an ambitious, charismatic, and hammy women who treats religion like a business, with her referring to faith as 'profit', which makes her unique amongst the more formal characters who treat it more traditionally and more seriously.
- She has a badass design and theme song that gets an awesome remix in Gouyoku Ibun.
- When she fought Suwako, she rusted Suwako's iron weaponry by holding out a thin magic vine in order to gain the advantage.
- When the inhabitants of Suwako's kingdom found it difficult to accept their new deity, she decided to borrow Suwako's powers to help consolidate her new realm.
- When profit began to decline in the mortal realm, Kanako quickly found a way around this problem and moved the Moriya shrine to Gensokyo, with the plan working well and causing her to be worshipped as the deity of the Youkai mountain.
- Upon seeing the power balance in Gensokyo was threatened due to kappa and tengu growing greater through their worship of her, she found a way around it by bringing in followers from outside and tried to see if she could utilize the Hakurei Shrine for her own needs.
- After her defeat, she redeemed herself and gave up on her plans to try to take over the Hakurei Shrine.
- Came up with a plan to give her followers higher living standards by starting a kappa industrial revolution and utilizing a new energy source to bring in more followers.
- In Subterranean Animism, she came up with a plan to utilize nuclear energy by feeding Utsuho Reiuji the remains of a sun god to use her as a heat and energy source, albeit this backfired when Utsuho attempted to use her newfound powers to take over Gensokyo.
- In Touhou Hisoutensokou, upon seeing that nuclear power might be too much for the Hisoutensokou built by the kappas, she proposes heat and electricity as alternative power sources.
- In Impossible Spell Card, after apparently reading the newspaper by the tengu about a mischief-making amanojaku, she becomes one of the many strong youkai and humans to try and stop Seija Kijin on day 9.
- When her experiment to produce nuclear energy produces energy inefficiently, she hosts a public experiment using a palladium alloy created by Reimu to great success.
- She orders the kappa to create a dam on a river on the Youkai Mountain in another plan to gather more faith.
- In Legacy of the Lunatic Kingdom, after realizing that Sanae had basically prevented the second coming of the Divine Emperor, she honorably decided that Sanae deserved to be praised for her accomplishment.
- In Unconnected Marketeers, she strikes a deal with Megumu to utilize ability cards as good luck charms at the Moriya Shrine to increase profit, with the plan being successful.
- In Gouyoku Ibun, she figured that the oil eruptions are the result of the former Hell of Blood Pools being reawakened, but is unsure whether Yuuma was directly responsible for reawakening it, or merely came to take advantage of its reawakening.
- She decides to create a dark contract with Yuuma to stop the oil eruptions by having her keep the oil from bubbling up to the surface, while any future leakages are incinerated in the reactor's furnace or personally dealt with by Kanako.
What makes her a Baddie?[]
- Took over Suwako Moriya's kingdom to rule over it herself.
- Tried to take over the Hakurei Shrine to acquire faith and profit more off her religion.
- When confronted by Reimu, she attacked her and tried to get her to comply with her plans by force, but was defeated.
- When confronted by Marisa, she engaged her in battle but was defeated, after which the two compromised when Marisa created a branch shrine for Kanako.
- Accidentally caused the events of Subterranean Animism by giving Utsuho Reiuji her powers.
- Indirectly caused the events of Unidentified Fantastic Object on accident due to Utsuho Reiuji's actions.
Trivia[]
- Out of all the Touhou Project Magnificent Baddies, Kanako is the only one to have caused the events of 3 games.
