“ Angelic steel isn't common, and those who have it aren't exactly rushing off to test it against exorcists. When my daughters and I were cornered in that last Extermination. I tried to buy time for my girls to flee, and well... You don't become an angelic arms dealer without arming yourself first. „
~ Carmilla telling Vaggie an Exorcist's weakness.

Carmilla Carmine is a supporting character in the adult animated series Hazbin Hotel.

She is one of Hell’s most powerful Overlords and is the ruler of Hell’s weapons industry who is also arguably their leader as well as the one responsible for killing an Exorcist to protect her daughters. While she isn’t truly evil, she still caused the events of the first season to play out but unintentionally with the Overlords learning that those from Heaven can be killed and Carmine fearing that what she did will make the situation worse.

She is voiced by Daphne Rubin-Vega.

What Makes Her Magnificent?[]

  • She managed to become a successful and influential Overlord after arriving in Hell and is shown to have something of a leadership role among the other Overlords, with even Alastor respecting her authority to a degree.
  • Runs Hell's weapons industry and is the only arms dealer in the franchise who is known to specifically manufacture and sell weapons forged from Exorcist blades left over from past Exterminations. Considering how rare angelic steel is stated to be in Hell, the fact that she's collected enough of it to build a successful business is impressive. She even forged a pair of knife-like ballet shoes made of angelic steel that she's incredibly skilled in using.
  • She has studied the Exorcist's reckless fighting style extensively and has recognized the openings in their swings to take advantage of, something that would prove beneficial in the future.
  • During the previous Extermination, she managed to decapitate an Exorcist while protecting her daughters, something that no demon had accomplished in the past. And she managed to hide her status as the killer from the public to avoid making herself and her family and business a target for the Exorcists.
  • She calls a meeting of the other Overlords to plan a strategy to minimize the casualty rate of the next Extermination to protect the souls that they own since the souls they own are the source of their power.
  • She isn't intimidated or threatened by Alastor's presence, casually dismissing his 7-year absence from Hell with a simple "welcome back", managing to genuinely get under the Radio Demon's skin without consequence despite Alastor's dreaded reputation in Pentagram City.
  • When Velvette shows the Overlords the head of the Exorcist Carmilla killed to persuade them into waging war on the angelic legions, she and Zestial refuse to indulge her short-sighted bloodlust, since attacking the angels without knowing their weakness would cause them to slaughter all of demon kind for daring to revolt against them.
    • When Velvette notices Carmilla's discomfort at the sight of the angel's head, she starts to insult Zestial and the other Overlords as cowards for refusing to fight back. Carmilla responds by singing "Respectless", calling out Velvette and the Vees as a whole for their arrogance and impulsive approach while defending Zestial's honor. When Velvette starts to question her reaction to the dead angel and accuses her of knowing more than she's letting on, Carmilla ends the meeting early to avoid giving Velvette any concrete information to work with.
  • She admits to Zestial that she's keeping her status as the angel killer and withholding her knowledge of the Exorcist's weakness to their steel to avoid starting a full-scale war and endangering Hell's people and her loved ones. She sings "Whatever It Takes" and reaffirms her commitment to protecting her family and Zestial.
  • When Vaggie coerces Carmilla into letting her into her home by threatening to reveal her killing of an Exorcist to the surrounding neighborhood, Carmilla then threatens to kill her unless Vaggie gives her a good reason not to, remaining firmly in control of the situation despite Vaggie knowing her secret being completely unexpected.
  • When Vaggie makes it clear that Adam will slaughter all of Hell starting with the Hazbin Hotel regardless of whether she stays silent about her accomplishment or not, Carmilla attacks her and strikes her in her blind spots and vulnerable openings to teach her the weaknesses to take advantage of when fighting Exorcists. She also deduces that Vaggie was a former Exorcist herself, snarkily pointing out her x eyepatch and her wielding an angelic spear as her giveaways while telling her about the angel's vulnerability to their weapons. She concludes Vaggie's training with the song "Out For Love", instilling Vaggie with the fear of losing Charlie to motivate her to fight efficiently while enabling her to regrow her lost angel wings.
  • After training Vaggie, she provides her and the Hotel's occupants and allies from Cannibal Town with enough angelic weapons to fight the Exorcists on Extermination Day. Her support was very crucial to the heroes' victory, managing to kill large numbers of Exorcists, with Niffty even managing to kill Adam himself with a holy knife. In short, she managed to help save all of Hell without endangering herself or her loved ones in the process. When hearing about the Hotel's triumph on the news, she smiles with satisfied relief at her gambit in relief.
  • Although Alastor managed to outwit her by having an Egg Boi spy on her and learn about her killing an angel, she couldn't have known about this due to the Egg Boi having entered the building unnoticed by anyone, Alastor included until after the fact. And even then, it doesn't backfire on her too badly due to her training Vaggie as a result.
  • Unlike other Overlords, notably Alastor and Valentino, she's not sadistic, abusive, petty, or vulgar. She carries herself with a pragmatic and no-nonsense attitude at all times and only commits heinous actions that benefit her or her loved ones. This attitude keeps her from being too much of a baddie to disqualify her.
  • She's an extremist and an anti-villain, being largely driven to protect those that she loves at all costs, such as her daughters Odette and Clara and her friend (and implied lover) Zestial, putting her up there with Rosie as the least villainous Overlord in Hell.
  • In addition to having an incredible design, Daphne Rubin-Vega gives her a great vocal performance, memorable quotes, and great vocals when she sings.

What Makes Her a Baddie?[]

  • Despite her pragmatism and sympathetic motivations, she's still an Overlord of Hell. And like all Overlords, she owns a large number of souls, with the ownership of souls by Overlords portrayed as being equivocal to enslavement. While she's implied to sincerely care for her souls beyond being a resource for her power, her owning them in the first place is still unethical.
  • She's Hell's most influential arms dealer and she's made a fortune selling dangerous weapons to demons throughout Hell, making her an accessory to many deaths throughout the realm.
    • One of her customers is Striker, a ruthless assassin who claims to have a kill count in the hundreds and is shown to own a personal arsenal of Carmine-crafted holy weapons that he used to nearly kill Prince Stolas twice, with the second attempt resulting in Stolas being tortured to near death with a holy knife.
  • Despite having understandable reasons for doing so, her refusing to share her knowledge of how to combat the Exorcists without putting her people at risk means that she's willing to allow the Extermination and mass murder of Sinners to continue to be carried out despite having the resources to prevent them, and only helped the Hotel because Hell's people were going to be killed en masse anyway.

Trivia[]

  • So far, she's the only Hellaverse candidate to originate from the original series.
