“You feel so powerful, you can do all this stuff.” Workshop participant Welcome to the project page for the Fruitmarket. We are a group of Wikipedia editors based at the Fruitmarket (an art gallery in Edinburgh, UK) dedicated to improving the pages of contemporary artists, working both in Scotland and internationally. We also work on the pages of contemporary art institutions and awards. We focus on areas of underrepresentation, such as addressing the gender gap on Wikipedia, and are particularly passionate about improving the pages of contemporary artists of colour. In 2017 we worked with Ewan McAndrew, Wikimedian in residence at the University of Edinburgh. From 2018 we have worked with Sara Thomas, Scotland Programme Coordinator for Wikimedia UK. In 2021 we started to work with artist and cultural practitioner Tanatsei Gambura on a new initiative, which has two central aims:
Our work was given an Honourable Mention in the Partnership of the Year category at the UK Wikimedian of the Year Awards 2022: "the Fruitmarket Gallery's focus on improving articles about artists of colour is an important expression of knowledge equity." |
