Removal image requests
[edit]This section is pinned and will not be automatically archived. |
Hi, I noticed you removed numerous image requests. I noticed this for a couple of pages on my watchlist and the requests there seem reasonable to me. Please explain your reason of removals. --Altenmann >talk 18:52, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Altenmann: Thanks for allowing me to explain myself. Per Template:Image requested, the image requested template is "
not a general-purpose "no image present" indicator ... Editors placing this template on a talk page should provide information about what images or photographs are wanted
". Apparently in 2014, a user added these requests to around 50,000 talk pages, to the talk pages of (apparently) every single Iranian village article that lacked an image (see this category as an example). So, while some of these requests can be viewed as valid (we don't always explain our reasons for adding the imagereq template to talk pages), your average user at least doesn't add them to thousands upon thousands of talk pages en masse using the same edit summary, disregarding the usage guidelines in the process. The massive number of image requests dilutes the template's importance (it isn't intended to be added en masse), and also goes against the usage guideline. Also according to those guidelines, Template:Improve images should be added instead as a ""no image present" indicator
". Nythar (๐ฌ-๐) 22:53, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
Question from Caroline Lancelyn Green (19:18, 18 October 2024)
[edit]I just want to rectify the errors in my family history. Not just now. I tried but found my corrections didn't stay. I'll do it when I have time. Thank you for being there to help. Caroline LG --Caroline Lancelyn Green (talk) 19:18, 18 October 2024 (UTC)

Villages category
[edit]Hello, just wondering why you just went through and mass removed a large number of articles from the "villages in" category? - Adolphus79 (talk) 12:42, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- Nevermind, I noticed they were already in the subcats per county right after this, thought it might have been an automated script/bot mistake. - Adolphus79 (talk) 12:44, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, that was the issue. Just cleaning up some overcategorization. Nythar (๐ฌ-๐) 12:49, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- Maybe I am overthinking this particular cleanup, but what if somebody wants to read or research villages in Ohio, or any state in the US, but doesn't want to find a list of the 88 counties in Ohio and then go to 88 separate county pages first? The purpose of WP:Cat is "readers can browse and quickly find sets of pages on topics that are defined by those characteristics." I don't think adding a village to "Villages in (state)" is overcategorization. These pages aren't overcategorized already. There are 50 states, a federal district, five major territories, and various minor islands in the US. There are 3,244 counties and county equivalents in the United States. That's a lot of county pages to go to if someone is reading about villages in the US, verses just over 50 pages. I'll grant you, using 50 category pages as a start is fair but sorting through 3,244 county pages first seems counter-intuitive of WP:Cat purpose. Was there a category discussion opened before this was undertaken? I am curious to read it, if so, to find the reasoning. Thanks. P37307 (talk) 13:42, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- If somebody would want to research villages in Ohio, then they'd be able to access the List of municipalities in Ohio article, which has a table that is sortable by classification and population (since municipalities in Ohio that have under 5,000 residents are automatically labeled as villages). That was my initial concern, too, when I saw the categorization changes (plus I was peeved by waking up to hundreds of notification emails), but hopefully the existence of that article should help readers. Alith Anar 15:18, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- Since villages are listed under municipalities for the entire state, that makes sense and was an overcategorization, esp since there aren't that many villages in the US, esp in Ohio, anymore that are official villages. Thanks for your consideration of that before you mass edited the pages and for your thoughtful response. Happy editing. P37307 (talk) 16:08, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- @P37307: If somebody wants to view a list of all Ohio village articles in a neat format, List of municipalities in Ohio, as Alith Anar pointed out, would be the best place to go, at least in my opinion. In general, it seems to be preferred (for town and village articles) that if an article fits neatly into a subcategory, it isn't included in the parent category. See for example Category:Rural localities in Russia (rural localities are equivalent to villages, I believe); this category contains no rural locality articles itself, but instead splits up Russia's rural localities into subcategories by Oblast and Republic. And for the subcategories that have sub-subcategories splitting up the "by Oblast" cats into "by District" cats (e.g., Category:Rural localities in Tver Oblast), the rural localities are again included only in the lowest level categories. If the issue with the 88 subcategories is that somebody might want to copy or view a full list of Ohio village articles, they could do so using the municipalities article pointed out above, but I doubt that the current system of categorization is going to impede anyone's research. The "by county" categories are organized and possibly more intuitive if you've got a map of Ohio. Regards, Nythar (๐ฌ-๐) 22:19, 19 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from Shrikrity Mishra (08:24, 23 October 2024)
[edit]Hii I am Shrikrity I want to ask you Why my Recently uploaded page is not show in Google search Please tell me . Thank you --Shrikrity Mishra (talk) 08:24, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- I believe you're referring to your userpage? I don't think userpages are indexed (see Wikipedia:Controlling search engine indexing), so it won't appear on Google searches. Regards, Nythar (๐ฌ-๐) 08:31, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
HI Nythar, I'm looking to create an entry for a local IT company, I've already created a brief entry. I'd like to ask for your opinion and advice as a senior editor, could you help me brush up on the objectivity within the sandbox, suggest what I should remove or potentially add?
I've searched up other companies and have taken inspiration from another company (COMBIS > https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combis) in my writing stile, I hope that's okay?
I've also incorporated a company infobox, but I'd like to add a reference to the key people section, it seems kind of wonky when I try to do it with <ref> tags (e.g. the references don't update at the bottom of the page). --Zabica99 (talk) 11:44, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Zabica99. For the references I've added {{reflist}} at the bottom of the page which should do the trick. I also fixed a few other minor issues. I think there are two things you'll need to take care of. The first is the company's name; is the company called "Candle Representative Office Zagreb" or was it known by that name in the past and is today known simply as "CROZ" (see your draft's history section)? The second is the draft's use of the term "solutions" both in the lede and in the History section. In general it is better to avoid using this term because it doesn't mean anything specific, and clarity is a good thing. For the lede I think you could replace "solutions" with the most notable service(s) provided by the company. Regards, Nythar (๐ฌ-๐) 12:03, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Nythar, thanks for the super quick response.
- I've taken your input and have applied some changes to simplify and clear up the article. I've also added the reference inside the infobox and it shows up as *1, but in the references section at the bottom it doesn't show up.
- A quick look would be appreciated :) Zabica99 (talk) 10:42, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Zabica99: I see it at the bottom of the page as the first reference:
"CROZ d.o.o." Retrieved 2024-10-24.

Ukraine Foreign Minister Edit
[edit]I did as you suggested and I found the original source saying he would be at the convention for multiple days, and I believe it just started yesterday. https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2024/10/21/7480654/ CaptainAhab1841 (talk) 21:13, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- @CaptainAhab1841: "
Ukraineโs Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha was reportedly present during the attack and his condition remains unknown.
" Does any source explicitly state that he was involved in the attack at all? Him being at a convention somewhere in Istanbul or Ankara doesn't mean he was "present during the attack" or that his "condition is unknown." This is original research and shouldn't be added unless a reliable source explicitly states that this is the case. Regards, Nythar (๐ฌ-๐) 21:17, 23 October 2024 (UTC)- It was this specific convention. CaptainAhab1841 (talk) 21:18, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- Maybe he was at a hotel when the attack took place, or dining at a restaurant. Again, you need a reliable source explicitly stating that he was involved in the attack. Nythar (๐ฌ-๐) 21:19, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- It was this specific convention. CaptainAhab1841 (talk) 21:18, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
Questions
[edit]I was just wondering where or how all of the new users are finding you to keep asking all these questions? I think I am interested in helping them also. - Adolphus79 (talk) 20:56, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Adolphus79. These questions are part of a mentorship program that many editors โ including me โ joined around last year. See this page for info on this program and how to sign up as a mentor. Cheers, Nythar (๐ฌ-๐) 21:06, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! It looks very interesting. I might wait to allow some time to pass after my recent indiscretions before signing up though. - Adolphus79 (talk) 21:26, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
Hello, there is a chart on blackmore's night wikipedia page. The one background singer and guitar player was with them in the beginning and then rejoined them again on October 28, 2022. I tried to add the later days to her column on the timeline template. I added from:10/28/2022 till:end on the same line she originally had. Is there somehow I can add this? --DmS7-PR (talk) 14:28, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hello and welcome to Wikipedia @DmS7-PR. I'm not sure exactly which guitarist you're referring to. If you could provide me with a name and source that supports the fact that she rejoined the band in 2022, I could add it to the graph for you. Regards, Nythar (๐ฌ-๐) 21:00, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
