Hello Abishe,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

Suggestions:

• There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
• Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
• Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
• This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

• Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
• Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
• Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! The Wikipedia Asian Month 2023[1] is coming ! The campaign start within a flexible 30 days from November to December. 1. Propose "Focus Theme" related to Asia !

If you are based somewhere in Asia, or have specific passion on an Asian topic, please propose your "Focus Theme" by October 25th. The WAM international team will select 5 themes. Please propose your focus theme through this link[2].

2. Enhancing existing articles can also count as part of campaign contribution.

Any edits, including creating new articles or adding new content to existing articles, over 3000 bytes in total would be able to get a reward. Last year, due to this change of rules, the Programs & Events Dashboard was suggested. However, according to community survey of 2022, Fountain Tool is still the best platform for tracking edit and points. You don’t need to create any Dashboard. For the tracking of editing existing article, the international team is currently designing a form. Will soon publish to the main page of WAM 2023.

3. More flexible campaign time

The contribution duration would remain 30days, but we extended the overall campaign timeline to 2 months. All organizers can decide when to start their WAM as long as the whole duration is within November 1st to December 31th. It means that you can participate in WAM based on the needs of your local community.

Timetable

• October 1st, 2023 : Publish International Campaign Page of the Year
• October 5th to 25th, 2023 : Call for focus themes of WAM 2023.
• Before 29 October, 2023: Complete Registration [3] of Each language Wikipedia.
• November 1st, UTC 00:00 to December 31th, UTC 00:00, 2023: Running the Campaign. (Find your local campaign for the actual event date.)
• January 1st to March 15th, 2024: Auditing of each language Wikipedia.
• March 30th, 2024: Deadline of reporting statistics and eligible editors to the International Team
• April 1st to May 15th, 2024: The international team distributes Barnstars and Certificates to eligible editors of each event.

@DareshMohan: Hello. Thank you for the appreciation and kind words. Basically I have the knack of writing really lengthy articles and that habit has eventually transpired into even at my workplace LOL with writing some essay type mails through Microsoft Outlook. I think you are referring to the YouTube links which I shared them as sources in Kavundampalayam and that is one area I really need to go back to the drawing board and stick to the basics of Wikipedia guidelines. @DareshMohan: Hey to be honest to create articles about these film actors, the mainstream media hasn't done anything special in terms of covering about their real life stories, struggles and what are the professional career achievements they have attained. For example I wrote article for comedian actress Rangammal but the sources repeatedly told facts about her in 2 or 3 lines and sentences. I only found more about her career through her exclusive interview available in YouTube which she gave sometime back where she tells about having acted alongside M. G. Ramachandran and the worst part is only after her death media reports about who she was and they never make much effort or research in capturing the important milestones in her career. The same problem lies with Vengal Rao as most of the sources only had detailed explanation about his health conditions being worsened but only talks less about his career like he worked as a stuntman for some popular actors and then he worked with Vadivelu over 30 films. There is no further information to speak of about him in first place. The media hasn't done enough to give attention to such individuals. The media only gives importance to high-profile actors and celebrities for viewership and target rating point to grab audience attention especially covering about those who are immensely popular. @DareshMohan: Ahh, I mean article on Thadi Balaji is currently not possible at the moment as the page is currently protected and it requires a special approval to proceed further [Require administrator access]. Actually I wrote this article way back in June 2018, but it was deleted due to an afd discussion in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Thadi Balaji (2nd nomination). I tried to claim that the subject should be able to meet WP:GNG guidelines since he has done numerous roles in films and took part in the Bigg Boss contest in it's second season, but the suggestion was rejected as I only started editing Wikipedia around that corner so I realised I may not have sufficient claim to prove my credibility at that time. I wanted to create an article on RmKV but Draft:RmKV got deleted since it was a stub and I think it wasn't neutral (since the sources praised it I think). I am so passionate about gaining knowledge and sharing knowledge to others in whatever capacity I could contribute eventhough I may have flaws from my end. The highlight is that many people use Wikipedia, but not many edit it — and I feel embarrassed for admitting I edit here. Many admins I think don't mass create articles -- I don't think you are admins. Any creating anywhere over 1,000 or more is very rare. I have many regrets in my life, but ... one day we all will make it. I don't think I can leave Wikipedia for video games or anything else, cause it is ok to be different. 😎 I also feel welcome here. @DareshMohan: Hi, I understand your thought process but you don't need to feel embarrassed to edit Wikipedia. You are doing a great job. Hopefully you will continue to do good work in Wikipedia and you have a great track record of 90,000+ edits in 3 years, you too have done a great job in terms of creating articles as you have created over 500 articles that's a great accomplishment and your edit count is a terrific record which speaks volume about your ability to showcase your talents and skillets by creating quality content. I feel those who are very much interested with Wikipedia and devote, allocate certain time slot to Wikipedia would value it as an integral part of their lives. I use Wikipedia as a stress relief and as a positive distraction from all the real life practical situations. I see it as a hobby and to positively impact myself to forget job stress and yeah obviously I am not much into socialising. I am also an introvert and with some extrovert characteristics, but I prefer to edit Wikipedia because I am so eager to write more and more articles. It's because of the thirst for general knowledge thing also it comes into my mind naturally. Every human is unique and make sure you do what you like because only you can decide the level of inner peace in you and only you understand your true passion. Don't compare yourself with others and be the person you are. We are all different and have different thinking patterns and belief systems. It is normal to worry about things and stuff which I do tend to think a lot. Socialising is sometimes difficult for me due to the need of meeting different kind of people who have different mindsets and most importantly it may not be easy to vibe with them as our taste could vary as well. The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.
