  • Plants vs Zombies 2011 Nintendo Life / Nlife Ltd Review - IGN - September 8, 2010
    • Adventure Mode is the meat of the game and allows you to play through the game's increasingly more difficult levels. As you complete a level, you'll be given access to a new plant, generally one that will be extremely useful for the upcoming levels. You'll also be able to choose which sets of plants you take into battle with you, another strategic part of the game that will require some thought and careful planning. As you play your way through the Adventure Mode, you'll unlock not only new plants and tools, but also a host of fun mini-games
    • Unlike many tower defense games there isn't a winding path the zombies follow towards your home. The yard is divided into six rows and zombies shuffle across the yard in a fairly orderly fashion. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Plants vs Zombies - review
    • Guardian - Nick Cowen - Friday 6 May 2011 - Guardian News and Media Limited
    • Plants vs Zombies is a tower defense game.
    • It was originally sold Window in 2009, and in 2010 as a iTune (2010) for the iPhone, where it broke sales records and made in $1m in revenue in nine days. As of May 2011, Plants vs Zombies has spread to the iPad, Xbox Live and PSN platforms, and there are plans to add a version for the Nintendo DS.
    • Like PopCap's titles, Plants vs Zombies appeals to both hard core and casual gamings. It is easy-to-play and enhanced by cartoonish visuals and eerily music, but it's content and its tactical gameplay deep.
    • In the main campaign, most episodes build plants to stop approaching zombies from entering a house and eating the family's brains!!. Some zombies are armored with buckets, traffic or American football gear, while one type floats using balloons, and defeats the defenders if it enter the house.
    • Players can use plants and fungi to shoot the zombies, wall-nuts to stop zombies from crushing the shooters, and spikes that delay and damage zombies. When a player wins a level, the game gives another type of plant, which the player can use for the rest of the campaign, so that the player's arsenal grows. Players can only collect coins after killing zombies, and use this "money" to build new types of plants from Crazy Dave's shop.
    • Cowen judges the Nintendo WiiWare and DSiWare the least desideratle offering: the controls work well, but use a drag-and-drop interface, rather than a select-and-click one; and the animation is far less smooth, and slows down sharply when a wave of zombies appeares.
    • At £24.99, the WiiWare is also the most expensive version of the game on the market.
  • Plants Vs. Zombies review on Nintendo DS - pushing up the daises - Nov 2011 - Associated Newspapers Limited
    • The reviers's favourite of PopGames' games, and probably the reviewers' favorite Tower Defense game.
    • The game's techniques are not very innovative, but it's personality wins friends.
    • Most Tower Defence games ask users to set up fixed weapons spots in a maze and try to stop a horde of enemies from getting past them to the exit. Plants vs Zombies uses a simpler horizontal set up, in which zombies shuffle from right to left towards you, but provides many more type of enemies and of defenses.
    • The player must collection sunlight from sunflowers !! to coverage the cost of builing plants.
    • The reviewer thought that the cheaper versions of the game were the best, especially the iOS version is just £1.79, but the most attractive and providing the best controls. However, the Nintendo's WiiWare and DSiWare versions, although almost as attractive and almost as easy to use, cost £24.99 and £7.20 respectively. The Nintendo offering gives relatively poor animation and slowdown graphics.
  • Plants vs. Zombies Review - IGN USA - US, May 5, 2009 - IGN Entertainment Games Sites - USA
    • PopCap's first tower defense game.
    • While it uses the basic mechanics of all tower defense games, Plants vs. Zombies provides great charm, personality, and wide variety of gameplay. The game will appeal to all catagatories of gamers.
    • The game's Almanac lists 26 types of zombie, and 48 types of plant, which provide offensive, defensive, and production capabilities. Completing each level in the game will unlock a new plant or item to add to your arsenal. These additions keep the gamer involved, stimulating "just one more level".
    • At the start of each round the player selects which plants to use. The "Choose your Plants" tool has a limited number of slots, and half the battle is in picking effective weapons. This helps the player to customize a strategy and combat the zombies on the players terms. !! There is also a wide variety of gameplay styles. Some levels take place during the day and some at night ...

      • Lawns are divided into grids, in which each square can contain any one plant chosen by the player. Zombies shamble, sprint, and swim from right to left toward your house. In any one level, the player selects up to 10 plants from almost 50 different plants. Sunflowers collect sun, which gives the resources to build defenses. Before choosing plants, the player can see which types of zombies will appear, and this will influence the selection, for example if the zombies include balloonists, it is the top priority to stop these.
