Popular Culture
[edit]Please see in the one-before-last version of this page my addition about the appearance of the term in popular culture. It was repeatedly deleted by an unknown individual without my approval and discussion. I hereby ask for mediation in this issue. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yotamabramson (talk • contribs) 14:46, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Yotamabramson. In most cases, Wikipedia articles should not have "Trivia" or "In Popular Culture" sections. Such content, if deemed appropriate for the article, should be incorporated into the rest of the article. In addition, all content in articles should be supported by reliable, secondary sources. It isn't enough that "Buccaneer" appeared in Seinfeld; secondary sources commenting on the appearance is what makes it important enough to mention. You can read more about our policies and guidelines on this at our Manual of Style on "Trivia" sections, the often-cited essay on "In Popular Culture" sections, and this section of WP:NOT, which is about the kind of content we shouldn't include in Wikipedia. - Thank you for this comment and the explanations you provided in private. However I did add multiple secondary sources, including ones discussion the special reference to Buccaneer in Seinfeld. Yotamabramson (talk) 16:54, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
- As Woodroar says, this section shouldn't be here. Your sources included reddit, a fandom wiki, and IMDB. None of these are reliable sources. See WP:USERG and WP:IMDB. ThaddeusSholto (talk) 17:01, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
- @ThaddeusSholto The secondary reference of seinfeld was not from the sources you mentioned. It was from a reliable source, a journal published by Smithsonian Institution. The Smithsonian Institution is a renowned museum and research complex located in Washington, D.C., it was established in 1846 "for the increase and diffusion of knowledge" and is named after its founder, British scientist James Smithson. You chose to ignore that, and to mention the other 3 sources. Also, I will appreciate if you could explain the cultural mention of a seinfeld episode in SS Andrea Doria, also a maritime issue. I dont see any reference there. And I can find hundreds of examples like this. Seinfeld mentions are highly acceptable in wikipedia. Even the United States Postal Service has one (again, with no primary nor secondary reference). I urge you to reconsider.Yotamabramson (talk) 19:11, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

- The Seinfeld source says nothing about "Buccaneers" nor does it claim the episode was culturally important in reference to Buccaneers. As for SS Andrea Doria, read WP:OTHERSTUFF. One article being incorrect doesn't mean all articles should be incorrect. Please read the MOS:POPCULT and WP:INDISCRIMINATE about why trivia sections shouldn't be in articles at all.
