Zebras are a species of animal native to the Back Lands, Hakuna Matata, and the Pride Lands. They feed on grass and are preyed upon by hyenas, jackals, leopards, and lions.
History[]
Simba's presentation[]
Several zebras attended the presentation of Simba at Pride Rock.[1] When Pumbaa inadvertently passed gas, causing the animals around him to faint, some zebras mistook the fainting for bowing and decided to bow before Simba themselves.[2]
Assisting Simba[]
Seasons later, when Simba was a cub, several zebras helped him and his friend, Nala, escape their babysitter, Zazu.[1]
Kiara's presentation[]

Thurston's advice to the Lion Guard on Flat Ridge Rock[]
“ |
|
” |
While searching for Flat Ridge Rock, the Lion Guard came across Thurston and his herd. Overhearing their dilemma, Thurston approached and asked if they needed directions. However, when Bunga asked where Flat Ridge Rock was, Thurston began to question if it was near Ukuni Woods or Big Springs. Finally, he admitted that he did not know and returned to his herd, after which Ono lamented how zebras never knew where they were going.[4]
Mashindano between Makuu and Pua[]
“ |
|
” |
Several zebras attended the mashindano between Makuu and Pua at Lake Matope. Shortly afterwards, when Makuu forcibly took over Big Springs, the Pride Landers were forced out of their natural habitats. This included the antelope and zebras, who were run out of their grazing ground by the elephants and forced to take up residence in Acacia Grove, thus driving out the giraffes. Eventually, the Lion Guard convinced Makuu to leave Big Springs, and the animals' original habitats were restored.[5]
Bunga the Wise[]
“ |

” |

Several zebras wait to hear Bunga's wisdom.
In order to block up a dam at Lake Kiziwa, Bunga suggested that the Lion Guard push large boulders into its path. When the idea seemingly worked, Thurston complimented Bunga on his wisdom. As they were talking, the dam suddenly sprang a leak, but Bunga plugged it with a stick, once more impressing Thurston.
Because of the incident, Bunga set himself up as a sage called "Bunga the Wise," and animals from all over the Pride Lands came to Hakuna Matata Falls for his advice, including some zebras. Eventually, Bunga led a procession across the Pride Lands, with two zebras joining in. Though the Lion Guard intercepted the parade and attempted to talk Bunga out of his position, the Pride Landers defended him.

Beshte saves some zebras from a flood.
At that moment, the dam at Lake Kiziwa broke, sending floodwaters raging across the Pride Lands, and the Lion Guard jumped into action. Beshte approached a nearby herd of zebras and implored them to follow Kion, while he remained behind to block the brunt of the floodwaters. Along with several other Pride Landers, the zebras followed Kion into a ravine, only for the group to reach a dead-end. Though the animals looked to Bunga for wisdom, he admitted that Kion knew what to do in tense situations. Taking over, Kion ordered the others to stand behind him, then used the Roar of the Elders to send the floodwaters surging backwards.
After the rescue, the Pride Landers enjoyed a new watering hole that had been created by the flood, including some zebras.[6]
Simba's duties[]
“ |
|
” |
When Simba grew melancholic about his kingly duties, Zazu reminded him about his more enjoyable duties, which included listening to the zebras' "silly pleas."[7]
Janja's first attack on Thurston's herd[]
“ |

” |

Ono implores Thurston's herd to move.
In an attempt to take advantage of Ono's eye injury, Janja and his minions, Cheezi and Chungu, plotted to attack Thurston's herd. Upon hearing about the hyenas' presence in the Pride Lands, the Lion Guard raced to Chakula Plains to stop them, only for Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu to drop giant rocks on either side of them, trapping them in a ravine. With the Guard incapacitated, the hyenas resolved to attack and eat Thurston's herd.
Before the hyenas could harm the zebras, Ono arrived, and Kion ordered him to warn the zebras about the danger. At first, Thurston refused to move, but when Ono yelled for the zebras to move, they panicked and stampeded away. With the herd out of the way, Kion used the Roar of the Elders to clear the ravine and confront Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu.[8]
Kupatana[]
Several zebras attended the Kupatana celebration at Mizimu Grove.[9]
False alarm[]
“ |

Kwato plays "Lion Guard" with his friends.
One day, Kwato and his friends were playing "Lion Guard," during which they feigned a hyena attack. In doing so, they frightened several nearby Pride Landers, including some zebras. Before long, the Lion Guard arrived on the scene and discovered that the young ones had simply been playing a game. They assured the Pride Landers that they were safe, and they dispersed. With the danger abated, the young animals asked the Guard to play with them, but Kion explained that they had business elsewhere.
Later, Thurston and several other Pride Landers complained to Beshte about the threat of the hyenas. Meanwhile, Kwato and his friends began to chase some hyraxes across the Pride Lands, only to get attacked by Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu. Though most of them managed to escape, the hyenas continued to chase Mtoto. Together, the young animals located Beshte and informed him that Mtoto was in danger. After Beshte saved Mtoto, Kion offered to give each young animal a Mark of the Guard, and they crowded around him excitedly.[10]
Janja's second attack on Thurston's herd[]
“ |

” |
While using Rafiki's bakora staff to bring paintings to life in the Lair of the Lion Guard, Bunga saw a painting of a zebra herd running as well as a painting of some rocks falling. Just then, Ono arrived with news that a zebra herd was stampeding across the Pride Lands, and the Lion Guard raced away to put a stop to the stampede.

The Lion Guard steers Thurston's herd away from a pile of rocks.
As the Lion Guard chased after the zebras, Bunga noticed that the stampede was heading toward a pile of rocks and realized that the scenario was eerily similar to the one depicted in Rafiki's paintings. Fearing that the paintings might predict the future, Bunga warned his friends that they needed to divert the herd, and they did so, moments before the pile of rocks collapsed.
Once the herd had calmed, Kion asked why they had started running, and Thurston claimed that they had been frightened by a "big boom." Ono deduced that they must have been spooked by thunder. Though Kion assured the zebras that they could return home, Thurston questioned which way their home was, and so, Kion sent Ono to escort the herd back to their grazing ground.

Three zebras get carried downstream.
With Ono in the lead, Thurston's herd returned home. From nearby, Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu resolved to attack the zebras. As the hyenas' hunt began, the Lion Guard arrived to defend the zebra herd. Though they managed to chase off the hyenas, Ono reported that three zebras had gotten stranded near Maji Baridi Falls. As the Guard approached them, however, Beshte accidentally sent a rock rolling toward them, and they jumped into a nearby river. In order to save them, Kion climbed onto a tree branch that was hanging below Maji Baridi Falls and used the Roar of the Elders to blow them back to safety.
Back at the Lair of the Lion Guard, Rafiki revealed to the Lion Guard that Bunga had watched his paintings backwards: it had been the falling rocks that had caused the zebras to run.[11]
Mbali Fields migration[]
“ | Kion: The zebras and the gazelles are in trouble? Ono: No, they are the trouble! They're fighting each other! |
” |
One day, Ono reported that the gazelles and zebras were fighting. Upon recognizing the herds as belonging to Muhimu and Swala, Beshte expressed confusion as to why they would fight, as their leaders were friends. As one, the Lion Guard intervened and learned that the herds' grazing grounds had shrunk to a single patch of grass. Kion presented the problem to his father, Simba, who suggested that the Lion Guard lead the herds to Mbali Fields.
The Lion Guard leads the gazelles and zebras to Mbali Fields.
With Kion in the lead, the gazelles and zebras set out for their new home. Upon arriving at a narrow pass, however, Muhimu impatiently charged ahead, and the rest of the herds followed suit. Though the Lion Guard tried to stop the stampede, the herds' pounding hooves caused rocks to fall into the pass, blocking the way into Mbali Fields. Their path barred, Kion asked Ono to scout out a new route, and he reported that the only other way into Mbali Fields would take them through the Outlands.
As the group doubled back through the canyon, a storm hit, and the Lion Guard rushed to save their charges from a flash flood. Once safe, the herds began to complain about Kion's leadership, and he consulted the spirit of his grandfather, Mufasa, for help. Mufasa advised Kion to have confidence in himself and not rely on the opinions of others. His confidence restored, Kion addressed the herds once more, only for them to reiterate their distrust in him. Unexpectedly, Muhimu spoke up, taking the blame for the earlier stampede, and promised to no longer be a hindrance to the Lion Guard. This encouraged the other gazelles and zebras to submit to Kion's authority as well.
Muhimu gives birth to a son.
Together, the herds and the Lion Guard entered the Outlands, only for Muhimu to suddenly go into labor. While Kion and Bunga remained behind with Muhimu, the rest of the Guard pressed on toward Mbali Fields. Before long, Muhimu gave birth to a son, whose loud brays attracted the attention of Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu. The hyenas attacked Muhimu and her son, intent on eating them, until the newborn foal kicked Janja in the face, prompting him and his fellows to retreat.
With the danger abated, Kion and Bunga led their charges to Mbali Fields. There, the Lion Guard watched contentedly as Bunga played with Muhimu's foal.[12]
Thurston's encounter with Ajabu[]
“ | ” |
One day, Ajabu the okapi attempted to graze alongside Thurston's herd. Noticing his presence, Thurston questioned if he was a zebra, but he denied this. Still confused, Thurston questioned if he was a short giraffe or a fancy antelope. At that moment, a leopard named Makucha attacked, and Thurston begged him not to eat him. Makucha retorted that he was after something much tastier, then ran off, leaving Thurston insulted.[13]
Makuu's attack on the Flood Plains[]
When Makuu and his float attacked the Flood Plains, several zebras fled.[14]
Reirei's attack on Muhimu's herd[]
“ | ” |
One morning, Reirei and her pack attacked Muhimu's herd. During the attack, Dogo and Kijana attempted to trick Muhimu's young son, Hamu, into slowing down and letting them eat him. Just in time, Bunga and Ono arrived and saved Hamu from harm. Meanwhile, the rest of the Lion Guard defeated Reirei's pack, and Kion ordered them to return to the Outlands.

Muhimu's herd flees the jackals.
In the wake of the attack, Muhimu fretted that she and her herd were still in danger, and Beshte encouraged her to take some time for herself. She protested that she had to watch Hamu, only to notice him playing happily with Bunga nearby. Getting an idea, she suggested that Hamu stay with Bunga, and he accepted the assignment. This prompted other Pride Lander parents to likewise send their children to Bunga for babysitting.
While looking after his charges, Bunga taught them self-defense. Shortly afterwards, Reirei's pack attacked the young ones, and Bunga urged them to use what they had learned to defend themselves. Heeding their babysitter's advice, the young animals successfully fended off the jackals. At that moment, the Pride Lander parents approached and praised Bunga for having taught their children how to protect themselves.[15]
Traveling Baboon Show[]
“ | ” |
Several zebras watched the Traveling Baboon Show perform. Afterwards, the Pride Landers noticed that a nearby area had been completely stripped of food, and the Lion Guard promised to investigate. Eventually, Ono uncovered the baboons' scheme to distract the Pride Landers with a show so that they could steal their food. Though initially unrepentant, the baboons later agreed to redistribute the stolen food to their victims.[16]
New water source[]
While Ma Tembo searched for a new water source, several Pride Landers began to follow her, including some zebras. At first, the crowd was noisy and rowdy, but once Makini hushed them, Ma Tembo was able to locate underground water nearby. The Pride Landers then drank happily from the new watering hole.[17]
Mashindano between Kiburi and Makuu[]
Several zebras attended the mashindano between Kiburi and Makuu at Lake Matope. They witnessed Kiburi's failed assassination attempt on Simba as well as his subsequent banishment from the Pride Lands.[18]
Thurston's herd trapped in mud[]
“ |
|
” |
One day, Thurston and several members of his herd got their hooves stuck in the mud of a dried-up riverbed. In an attempt to loosen the mud, Kion used the Roar of the Elders to create a rainstorm. Though the resulting rain loosened the mud and helped the zebras free their hooves, it also created a flash flood that began to rush down the riverbed toward the Guard and the zebras. Just in time, the zebras wrested themselves free and made it to solid ground.[19]
Brush fire[]

Thurston's herd flees a brush fire.
One day, a brush fire raged across the Pride Lands, causing Thurston's herd to stampede in panic. Once the Lion Guard had put out the fire, they ran after the zebras and calmed them down. Kion asked Thurston how the fire had started, and he revealed that it had been ignited by a bolt of lightning. With some help from Ono, the zebras returned to their grazing grounds.
Later, several zebras attended Makini's painting session for the royal family at Pride Rock.[20]
Thurston assists the Lion Guard[]

One day, a swarm of tsetse flies plagued a herd of cape buffalo, and so, the Lion Guard steered them toward a nearby water source. As the group ran, they passed Thurston's herd and entered the water, after which the flies dispersed.

The Lion Guard escorts both Mbeya and the zebras to a new watering hole.
Later, the Lion Guard attempted to escort Mbeya across the Pride Lands, only to run into more tsetse flies. Suddenly, the flies disappeared, just as Thurston and his herd approached, seeking a new watering hole. This made Ono remember that tsetse flies disliked zebra stripes. Getting an idea, Kion decided to escort both Mbeya and the zebras to a new watering hole so as to ward off any remaining tsetse flies.
After leading Mbeya and Thurston's herd to a watering hole, the Lion Guard attempted to enter the Outlands to help Madoa but were once more swarmed by tsetse flies. Desperate to make faster progress, Kion invited Thurston to accompany them into the Outlands and thus keep the flies away, and he agreed, hoping to "earn a new stripe" for his bravery.

Thurston accompanies the Lion Guard into the Outlands.
Together, the Lion Guard, Madoa, and Thurston entered the Outlands. Before long, the tsetse flies cleared completely, and the Guard told Thurston he could return to the Pride Lands. Though he initially headed toward home, he got turned around and ended up following the Guard deeper into the Outlands.
After the Lion Guard defeated Janja and his clan, they escorted Thurston back to the Pride Lands. There, Kion thanked him for his help, and he mistakenly believed that he had been invited to join the Lion Guard. Excitedly, he informed his herd of the good news, while the Lion Guard looked on in bemusement. At that moment, the tsetse flies reappeared, and the Guard opted to remain with the zebras.[21]
Kenge's attack[]
When Kenge attacked a watering hole in the Pride Lands, several zebras fled from him.[22]
Christmas[]

Thurston's herd participated in Bunga's Christmas performance of "The Twelve Ways of Christmas".[23]
Dhahabu's alliance with the Lion Guard[]
“ |
|
” |

Dhahabu introduces herself to the Lion Guard.
As the dry season intensified in the Pride Lands, Simba combed Rafiki's paintings for a solution to their water shortage. Recognizing a water hole from the paintings, Makini explained that it belonged to a herd of zebras in the Back Lands, and Simba deduced that it must be Dhahabu's watering hole. He then tasked the Lion Guard with requesting permission from Dhahabu to use her herd's watering hole.
Together, the Lion Guard ventured into the Back Lands and presented themselves to Dhahabu. To their shock and awe, they learned that she was a rare golden zebra. As she showed them around her kingdom, Kion explained the Pride Landers' situation and asked if the Pride Landers could use her herd's watering hole, offering a boon in return. Somewhat evasively, Dhahabu requested that the Guard bring her her herd's favorite food: a Tamboa plant.

Dhahabu's herd shares their watering hole with the Pride Landers.
With help from Ono, the Lion Guard located a Tamboa plant and carried it back to Dhahabu. To their surprise, she called off their deal and even forbid her own herd from using the watering hole. Suspicious, Kion sent Ono to investigate, and he returned with news that the zebras' watering hole had dried up. As Dhahabu's herd walked away, disappointed in her, she confessed to the Lion Guard that she had not told her herd about the watering hole's condition for fear of upsetting them. Kion then offered to restore the herd's watering hole if Dhahabu allowed the Pride Landers to use it, and she agreed.
After investigating, the Lion Guard and Dhahabu found that the waterfall that fed the watering hole had been blocked by a pile of rocks. Though Makucha and several leopard allies tried to stop the Guard from clearing the blockage, they defeated them, with Dhahabu kicking Makucha into the rock pile itself. The force of Makucha's hit caused the dam to burst and fill the zebras' watering hole once more. With her herd's water restored, Dhahabu invited the Pride Landers to share it.[24]
Tamaa's performance[]
Several zebras watched Tamaa perform his voice impersonation tricks.[25]
Kumbuka celebration[]
Several zebras attended the Kumbuka celebration at Pride Rock. They reacted with horror when Simba got stung by Sumu and collapsed in full view of his audience.[26]
Kinyonga's encounter with Thurston's herd[]
“ | ” |

Thurston's herd unknowingly speaks with Kinyonga.
One day, Thurston's herd began stampeding across the Pride Lands, and the Lion Guard rushed to stop them. Once the zebras had been calmed, Bunga asked what had frightened them, and Thurston explained that a rock had spoken to him. Though the Guard initially doubted his claim, Twiga soon approached with a similar story about a talking tree. The Guard then agreed to investigate the situation and discovered that it had been a chameleon named Kinyonga who had been frightening Twiga and the zebras.
Later, a camouflaged Kinyonga conversed with Thurston, calling him "the handsomest zebra" she had ever met. At that moment, the Lion Guard approached, and Kinyonga revealed herself to them. Terrified that he had been talking to a chameleon rather than a rock, Thurston fled, with his herd in hot pursuit, and the Guard scrambled to calm them down.[27]
Thurston's advice to the Outlanders[]
“ |
|
” |

Thurston brags to his herd that he is the true mastermind behind the Lion Guard.
One day, when a dust devil blew past Thurston's herd, Thurston complained to the Lion Guard that they needed to put a stop to the dust devils. Kion pointed out that they could not predict when or where a dust devil would hit, but Thurston retorted that they should stay on the alert. Just then, Ono arrived with news of another dust devil, and Kion thanked Thurston for his advice before leading his teammates away.
Misunderstanding Kion's comment, Thurston bragged to his herd that the Lion Guard had taken his advice; thus, he was the real reason for their success. From nearby, Cheezi and Chungu overheard Thurston's boasting and resolved to bring him before Scar. Once in the Outlands, Thurston claimed that flowers made the Lion Guard sneeze. Cheezi and Chungu tested his assertion, only for the Guard to be completely unaffected.

Thurston advises Nduli and Tamka on how to deal with the Lion Guard.
Shortly afterwards, Thurston told Goigoi that the Lion Guard could not see him due to his stripes. Like the hyenas, Goigoi took Thurston's suggestion and attempted to sneak up on the Lion Guard while covered in painted stripes, with disastrous results. Similarly, Nduli and Tamka heeded Thurston's advice to tickle the Lion Guard's bellies so that they would fall asleep, but Kion simply blew them away with the Roar of the Elders.
Enraged by Thurston's deception, the Outlanders resolved to eat him. Before they could harm him, the Lion Guard intervened and drove them away. Once the Outlanders had run off, Thurston revealed that he had been advising them on how to deal with the Lion Guard, and the team realized why they had been the butt-end of such strange attacks all day. They proceeded to lead Thurston back to the Pride Lands.[28]
Thurston trapped underground[]
“ | ” |
While trapped underground, Kion and his friends ran into Thurston. Though they questioned him on how he had gotten into the tunnels, he was unable to recall anything useful. Getting an idea, Kion recruited Muhangus to help lead them out of the underground. As the group neared the exit, Thurston realized that he had been trapped underground the entire time and began to panic. Empathizing with his fear, Tiifu managed to calm him down and lead him safely out of the tunnel. The moment he was free, however, he simply entered another tunnel and began to panic again, forcing Tiifu to run in after him.[29]
Shujaa's attack[]
“ |
|
” |
One day, the Lion Guard regulated when each species could drink from a watering hole, to Thurston's disapproval. Suddenly, a gorilla named Shujaa attacked, and Thurston's herd ran away in a panic, as did some giraffes. Kion ordered Beshte and Ono to calm the herds, and they did as commanded.[30]
Dhahabu's water treaty with Simba[]
“ |
|
” |

Dhahabu and her herd arrive in the Pride Lands.
One day, the Pride Landers gathered at Pride Rock for the arrival of Dhahabu and her herd, who were coming to discuss a water treaty with the Pride Lands. As her audience looked on, Dhahabu joined Simba atop Pride Rock, and he formally welcomed her to the Pride Lands. He added that the official celebration would continue at sundown.
Afterwards, Kiara, Tiifu, Zuri, and the Lion Guard took Dhahabu on a tour around the Pride Lands. In the midst of the tour, a bolt of dry lightning set fire to the savanna, and Fuli helped a terrified Dhahabu escape danger. Once out of harm's way, Dhahabu praised Fuli for her bravery, as well as Tiifu and Zuri for having remained by her side, and insisted that the three of them remain by her side throughout her visit. For the sake of the water treaty, Fuli agreed.

Raha and Starehe cover up their part in saving Dhahabu's life.
Meanwhile, Shupavu and Njano informed Scar about Dhahabu's visit to the Pride Lands, and he schemed to put an end to her water treaty. Per Scar's orders, Reirei's pack attacked Dhahabu, only for the Lion Guard, Raha, and Starehe to come to her rescue. In the wake of the attack, Dhahabu mistakenly believed that it had been Tiifu and Zuri who had saved her life and so appointed them and Fuli to be her "Queen's Guard." When Kion tried to clarify that it had been Raha and Starehe who had saved her, they interrupted and affirmed her misconceptions. Privately, Kion questioned them on their motivations, and they explained that Dhahabu kept them around because they were happy and carefree, and thus would not like to see them fighting.
Later, when the jackals attacked Dhahabu again, this time alongside crocodile allies, Raha and Starehe fought them off in full view of their queen. Awed by their skills, Dhahabu relieved Fuli, Tiifu, and Zuri of their positions and appointed Raha and Starehe in their stead. Together, the group returned to Pride Rock, where Dhahabu renewed her water treaty with the Pride Landers.[31]
Scar's attack on Mizimu Grove[]
“ |
|
” |
Several zebras attended Makini's mpando mpaya at Mizimu Grove. In the midst of the celebration, the Army of Scar attacked, and the Pride Landers worked together to fend them off. Suddenly, Scar's spirit manifested in a nearby fire, and the Pride Landers fled Mizimu Grove in terror. Fuli ordered Bunga to pursue the zebras, and he did so, eventually catching up to Thurston and calming him down by claiming that he had won a race.

Bunga calms Thurston's herd.
Once the Pride Landers had calmed down and returned to Mizimu Grove, Simba admitted that he had had knowledge of Scar's return for some time. The herds considered whether they should leave the kingdom for good, and Simba told them to inform him of their decisions the following morning at Pride Rock.
Come morning, the Pride Landers gathered at Pride Rock to give Simba their final answers, only for Kion to interrupt and implore them to follow him to Mizimu Grove. They did so, and he revealed that Makini's baobab seedling had survived Scar's fire. This inspired the Pride Landers to remain in their kingdom and resist Scar's tyranny.[32]
Lion Guard's trip to the Tree of Life[]
“ |
|
” |
As the Lion Guard readied to leave the Pride Lands on their journey to the Tree of Life, Thurston approached Kion and assured him that the zebras would protect the kingdom in his absence. Kion thanked him by name, and he subsequently boasted to his herd that he had told them that Kion knew his name.[33]
Kovu's exile[]
Several zebras helped drive Kovu out of the Pride Lands following his exile by Simba.[3]
Marriage of Kovu and Kiara[]
Several zebras attended the wedding of Kovu and Kiara at Pride Rock.[3]
Battle of the Lion Guards[]
“ | Thurston: Excuse me. If you really want to see who's best, you should do it the zebra way. Anga: And what's that? Thurston: You have a competition. We zebras find the best zebra by seeing who can panic and run the best. |
” |
One day, Thurston got stuck in a hole, and Laini appealed to Kion's and Vitani's Lion Guards for help. Upon arriving at the scene, the Guards proceeded to bicker over which team had the right to save Thurston, and Azaad was forced to help Thurston back out of the hole in their stead. Noticing the Guards' plight, Thurston suggested that they do it the "zebra way," i.e. hold a formal competition to determine which team was better. Per his suggestion, the Lion Guards agreed to the Battle of the Lion Guards. Several zebras spectated Beshte and Imara's contest.[34]
Kion's coronation[]
“ |

” |
Several zebras attended Kion's wedding to Rani at the Tree of Life. During the ceremony, Thurston told Pinguino that he had taught Kion everything he knew.[34]
Physical characteristics[]
Zebras are moderately sized, four-legged animals. They have fur that is striped with black and white, as well as short black and white manes. Their eyes can be black,[1] blue,[12] brown,[4] or purple.[10]
Sociocultural characteristics[]
“ |
|
” |

Zebras are prone to panicking at the slightest hint of danger.
Zebras can live in jungle or savanna habitats, residing in the Back Lands, Hakuna Matata, and the Pride Lands.[24][1] They live in herds led by a single leader.[8][12] They feed on grass and are preyed upon by crocodiles,[28] hyenas,[8] jackals,[15] leopards,[24] and lions.[1]
Zebras are known for having a bad sense of direction.[4][11] They are easily spooked and will often "panic and run" at the slightest sign of abnormality or danger.[19][29] Some zebras, like Dhahabu's herd, "frolic and romp" instead.[24] Zebras consider the ability to "panic and run" the highest honor and even use this metric to determine who is the best among them.[34]
