Stratigraphia est stratorum geologicorum studium, e quo evolvuntur definitiones unitatum stratigraphicarum et scala aevorum geologicorum.
Primum stratigraphiae principium, lex superpositionis dictum (strata profundiora antiquiora sunt) a Nicolao Stenone saeculo septemdecimo enuntiatum est.[1]
