This article is about a Rider in Kamen Rider Blade. |
- For the A. R. World version or Kamen Rider Leangle 300 years after, see Mutsuki Kuroha and Satsuki.
Mutsuki Kamijo (上城 睦月, Kamijō Mutsuki) is a young high school student who transforms into Kamen Rider Leangle (仮面ライダーレンゲル, Kamen Raidā Rengeru, Masked Rider Leangle), doing so for some time while being possessed by the Spider Undead.
Biography[]
He is a troubled high school student who proved compatible with the Leange Buckle, thus being personally chosen by the Spider Undead (Category Ace of Clubs) as its primary host.
As a baby, Mutsuki was kidnapped and placed inside a coin locker, something that continues to haunt him in the present. Using this trauma to his advantage, the Spider Undead gradually corrupted Mutsuki's mind with each transformation, intending to become the ultimate victor of the Battle Fight.
Though Kenzaki, Tachibana, and Mutsuki's girlfriend Nozomi urged him to regain control, Mutsuki eventually became the Spider Undead's complete host, transforming into its Undead form at one point. However, once Shima and Hikaru assisted him as the Tarantula and Tiger Undead, Mutsuki was ultimately freed from his corruption, allowing him to properly seal the Spider Undead away.
Once the Battle Fight ended in Hajime's "victory", countless Darkroach began appearing throughout the world, each intent on devouring all other life on Earth. Aware that Hajime could no longer control his Undead instincts, Mutsuki decided to seal him away for good, only to be defeated in their duel.
Though alive from his fight with Hajime, Mutsuki was too injured to use Leangle's powers any further, leaving Earth's fate to Kenzaki alone. In the aftermath, the Darkroach suddenly disappeared, narrowly saving Mutsuki and the others from a grisly fate. Alongside Tachibana, Mutuki rushed to Hajime's location, learning what had happened to Kenzaki.
With the world saved, everyone returned to their daily lives. Mutsuki is shown playing basketball at school, having Nozomi by his side.

Due to Hajime's unexpected help to differentiate to the two Blades, he and Tachibana gave their Rouse cards and were surprised because Kenzaki's Jack Form and King Form are viewed the same time. Personality[]
Mutsuki is introduced as a meek and well-meaning individual. However, his personality started to change after his encounter with the Spider Undead. Initially, Mutsuki sought to emulate his predecessors as a Kamen Rider, being personally trained by Tachibana himself. With each battle, Mutsuki gradually grew stronger as an individual, becoming more confident in the process.
Using this growth to his advantage, the Spider Undead warped Mutsuki's self-confidence into hubris, turning the latter into an extention of its evil will. In this state, Mutsuki was an arrogant individual with a delusions of grandeur, being utterly convinced that he was the strongest Rider in existence. No longer caring about the well-being of others, Mutsuki regularly antagonized Kenzaki and the others, seeing them as beneath himself. Deep down though, Mutsuki still retained a sliver of his former self, showing some sense of empathy at times, especially towards Nozomi.
Once witnessing Kenzaki's immense growth as a Kamen Rider, Mutsuki's delusions began to crack, growing visibly annoyed at their difference in strength. Combined with his defeat against Hajime in Jack Form, Mutsuki ultimately decided to become stronger by any means necessary, attempting to do so via underhanded means.
After being freed from Spider Undead's evil will, Mutsuki regained his humble and kind nature, something that was now combined with a firm sense of courage. Though still unsure of himself at times, Mutsuki continued to assist his predecessors in any way possible, being crucial to their crusade.
Fighting Style[]
Mutsuki is a melee mid range fighter. When controlled by the Spider Undead, Mutsuki proved very vicious and unpredictable, easily overwhelming Kenzaki and Hajime in their initial encounter, if having doing so partly via an ambush and use of the Remote Tapir card.
After he was trained by Tachibana, Mutsuki became a very adept fighter, quickly adapting to the situation.
Different than any previous Leangle users, Spider Undead and Go Kiryu, Mutsuki does not control Undead by the force of the will, but his reliance and willingness to cooperate, shown only once in the show. In previous instances, he was under the control of the Spider Undead.
Forms[]
The Leangle system was developed through tricks and manipulation by Isaka, the Peacock Undead, who needed the sealed Spider Undead to complete it. However, as later revealed, the Undead was not sealed properly and could thus manipulate its users as a host. This was later remedied once Mutsuki resealed the Spider Undead, something that is reflected on the Rouse card and transformation sequence.
For Mutsuki to change into Leangle, he has to insert the sealed ♣A: Change Spider card into his Leangle Buckle and position his buckle in front of his waist. The belt then expands automatically around his waist. Mutsuki makes a motion with his right hand across his face and says "Henshin!", then manually opens a portion of his buckle. The buckle announces "Open Up!" at this point. A projection of a spider image then comes out before him. Unlike Blade and Garren's method of transformation (running into their projections), Mutsuki's projection comes to him and completes his transformation into Leangle.
The same "Open Up" system would be used for the Rider Systems of the movie-only Riders Kamen Rider Glaive, Kamen Rider Lance and Kamen Rider Larc.

Leangle's default for assumed by using the Leangle Buckle and Change Spider Rouse Card. The transformation fuses the user with the DNA of the Spider Undead. Leangle has higher specs than Blade and Garren, allowing him to compensate for the fact that he cannot assume other forms like them.

While never assumed in the series, Leangle's Jack Form (ジャックフォーム, Jakku Fōmu) can be seen in the S.I.C. Hero Saga toyline. Leangle would theoretically assume this form by inserting the Absorb Tiger Rouse Card into the Rouse Absorber and scanning the Fusion Elephant Rouse Card. Unlike other Jack Forms, this form is not as maneuverable and lacks the ability to fly, but it compensates with superior strength and defensive abilities. Both shoulders are equipped with Orichalcum Tusk (オリハルコンタスク, Oriharukon Tasuku).[4] This form's new weapons are the Leangle Rouzer Empowered Type (with Diamante Edge), and the large iron ball.

King Form (キングフォーム, Kingu Fōmu) is the the ultimate combat extension of the Rider System. This transformation is initiated by inserting the Absorb Tiger Rouse Card into the Rouse Absorber and scanning the Evolution Tarantula Rouse Card. It is Leangle's final form, and endows the Rider Armor with the attributes and characteristics of the Tarantula Undead's DNA.[5]
Towards the end of the period where Spider Undead possessed Mutsuki, Leangle came close to transforming into King Form using Garren's Rouse Absorber. However, this attempt failed after the spirits of Noboru Shima and Hikaru Jo intervened, breaking Spider's control over Mutsuki, with the latter opting to use the Tarantula Undead's form in its place.
In later years, however, Mutsuki was able to assume Leangle King Form after re-obtaining the Evolution Tarantula Rouze Card. Unlike Blade, this form only allows Leangle to fuse with the Category King instead of all 13 Rouse Cards in the Clubs Suit due to his fusion rate being normal.

- Statistics
The Spider Undead is able to shoot webs from his mouth to immobilize his victims, drain the lifeforce of others, and spawn golden spiders to seek out and latch onto ideal hosts. While in the form of an improperly sealed Rouse Card, he can control the wielder.

The Evolution Tarantula (エボルーショントランチュラ, Evorushon Toranchura) is the result of the sealed Hikaru Jo and Noboru Shima seizing control of Leangle from the Spider Undead after it attempted to transform into King Form with Garren's Rouse Absorber. In the ensuing battle against the Spider Undead, who was expelled from Mutsuki's body, Mutsuki morphed between his human form and Shima's Undead form. This form, along with Blade's assistance, allowed Mutsuki to defeat the Spider Undead and properly seal it.
When Mutsuki assumes this form, he retains the Leangle Buckle on his waist in its closed state.

Behind the Scenes[]
Portrayal[]
Mitsuki Kamijo is played by Takahiro Hojo (北条 隆博, Hōjō Takahiro). As a child he is played by Shogo Ehara (江原 省吾, Ehara Shōgo). As Kamen Rider Leangle, his suit actors were Jiro Okamoto (岡元 次郎, Okamoto Jirō) and Jun Watanabe (渡辺 淳, Watanabe Jun).
Meme[]
- Despite not being the one to say it, episode 17 has the convenience store's old female worker alerting a robbery by calling Mutsuki to catch him has become a subject for the Ondul language, given the lady's near-unintelligible line "追っかけてん 睦月" (, Okkaketen Mutsuki, Go get him, Mutsuki!), which sounds like "オッペケテンムッキー!" (, Oppeketen Mukkī!). This line usually appears in Niconico streaming sites where videos of chase scenes would occur, causing the audience to quote the meme. It was also through this meme that Mutsuki gains the nickname Mukki (ムッキー, Mukkī), a fact that is acknowledged by his actor, Takahiro Hojo,[8] who also at times visiting the store's real life location (Mami Mart in Matsukazedai, Higashimatsuyama, Saitama) and/or reenacting the chase scene.[9][10][11]
- Mutsuki screaming to the approaching Mole Undead in episode 22 became a subject for Kamen Rider Blade MADs.
- While under the Spider Undead's influence, Mutsuki constantly boasted of his strength as Kamen Rider Leangle, proclaiming himself as "the strongest". Given his overall lackluster fight record however, many fans mock this arrogant attitude, with it commonly defined by a line he says in episode 42 against the Tiger Undead; I am the strongest! (俺は最強だー!, Ore wa saikyō da!)
- In the Japanese fandom, Leangle's frequent misfortune for being the short end of the stick granted him the moniker Habura Leangle (はぶらレンゲル/ハブラレンゲル, Haburarengeru), a pun of his name and the Japanese slang Haburareru (ハブられる lit. "to be left behind").[12] To elaborate on his misfortunes:
- His lack of enhanced forms, such as Jack and King Forms on-screen despite Leangle's already-established specs makes him stronger than Blade and Garren in their default forms. Super Imaginative Chogokin would release Leangle's Jack Form a decade after Blade finished its airing and King Form in the 20th anniversary stage event.
- Relating above, his lack of ability to fly, forcing him to remain grounded and at a disadvantage against airborne opponents. His Missing Ace iteration using the Float Dragonfly Rouze Card (which is from the Suit of Hearts, normally reserved for Hajime/Chalice) in against Jashin 14 further poking fun at this situation when Blade and Garren uses Jack Forms.
- The lack of a three-card combo for his Rider Kick from the rest of the Blade Riders, as Blizzard Venom was a Rider Thrust instead.
- His lack of a corresponding Ridewatch, as Blade had his retail release, Garren being the cheaper GP release and Chalice eventually getting his through a poll conducted by Premium Bandai. This stands out particularly since Leangle's name was also present as one of the many candidates of the P-Bandai poll releases.
- His SHODO figurine being released later than the rest of his fellow Blade Riders, his actor even quoted the meme upon its announcement.[13]
Concept Art[]
Notes[]
- Despite his later debut, Mutsuki was already confirmed to be a part of the main cast as Leangle prior to the premiere of the series.[14][15][16] As such, he can be seen in the show's first opening sequence beginning from the first episode, though with his face partially obscured by his fedora. Beginning from episode 17 which features his first full transformation into Leangle, his face would be fully shown.
