In Libson, James pursues an ex Nazi torturer called Klaus Ulrich, going under the name Adler. James is told to capture him alive, but Adler is killed by an eagle. In Berlin, James goes to a Cafe to protect engineer Leslie Aird from kidnappers. After a fight, James carries the panicked Aird out of the cafe, then saves a German girl from a lorry driver. Bill says the first person to go into the cafe was a German man called Nikko. He informs James about an "operation bird man", explaining to James that "Adler" is German for eagle and how Aird was also an expert on flapping aircraft. Moneypenny shows James a spanner from Aird's pocket with the words "Franz Maschinenfabrik." James goes to Franz Maschinenfabrik plant and is attacked by an eagle which he shoots, causing the plant to explode. James deduces the eagle was a robot and the reason Aird was required. James meets Helga, the girl from the cafe, and later goes to the MI6 Berlin station, where Bill indentifies a man with Helga called Wulf Ehrnt, an agent of the east German secret police. James tells Bill both Helga and Wulf have double eagle tattoos, the emblem of a group combining west and east Germans, and realizes Wulf's plan to destroy the Berlin wall with five explosive eagles. The eagles, which James says are guided visually, are launched. Nikko shoots Wulf, but is shot by James before he can shoot Helga. The eagles explode, and the Berlin wall is shattered.
