Funimation is an American company that dubs and distributes anime. As of 2022, the company is gradually rebranding as Crunchyroll, LLC.
Funimation gained the license to dub Initial D after Tokyopop lost their license in 2009.[1]
Anime[]
Funimation distributed Tokyopop's dub of Initial D for them after their original distributor went out of business.[2] They would later pick up the license for the first four stages of the anime after Tokyopop's license expired.[1]
The Funimation dub of Initial D was released out of order, with Third and Fourth Stage being dubbed and released before First, Second, and Extra Stage, likely because Tokyopop had already previously released their own dub of those stages.
Funimation have not licensed Extra Stage 2, Fifth, or Final Stage, and they have not stated whether or not they will.
Unlike the Tokyopop dub, the Funimation dub kept the original eurobeat soundtrack and the names of characters from the Japanese version. The visuals were also left unchanged.
