Alan Irwin Menken (lahir tanggal 22 Juli 1949)[2] merupakan seorang pianis, pencipta lagu dan komposer teater musikal dan film Amerika Serikat. Ia dikenal sebagai komposer film-film Walt Disney Animation Studios seperti The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992) dan Pocahontas (1995). Ia mendapatkan delapan Academy Awards untuk kategori musik orisinal terbaik dan lagu orisinal terbaik, masing-masing dari keempat film tersebut.[3][4] Namanya masuk ke dalam daftar legenda Disney tahun 2001.[5]
Pendidikan dan latar belakang
[sunting | sunting sumber]Alan Irwin Menken lahir pada tanggal 22 Juli 1949 di French Hospital di New York City, dari pasangan Judith dan Norman Menken. Ayahnya merupakan seorang dokter gigi yang gemar bermain piano boogie-woogie, sementara ibunya merupakan seorang aktris, penari dan pengarang drama sandiwara.[6][7] Menken tertarik dengan musik sejak dini, mengikuti pelajaran piano dan biola. Ia mulai mengarang musik di usia dini.[8] Pada usia 9 tahun, di New York Federation of Music Clubs Junior Composers Contest, komposisi orisinalnya yang berjudul "Bouree" dinilai istimewa dan sanggat unggul oleh para juri.[9]
Ia melanjutkan pendidikannya di New Rochelle High School di New Rochelle, New York, dan lulus pada tahun 1967.[10] Lalu ia mendaftar di Universitas New York.[3] Ia lulus dengan gelar di bidang musikologi Steinhardt School pada tahun 1971. Setelah lulus kuliah, ia mengikuti BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop.[11]
Kehidupan pribadi
[sunting | sunting sumber]Menken bertemu dengan penari balet Janis Roswick ketika bekerja di Downtown Ballet Company. Mereka menikah pada bulan November 1972 dan tinggal di North Salem, New York. Mereka memiliki dua putri, Anna Menken dan Nora Menken.[12]
