Mammoths were large, trunked, tusked mammals that lived during the ice ages.

Traits[]

Large, four-legged, woolly mammals, mammoths usually lived and moved in herds, though some exceptions, such as Manny, who journeyed alone, existed. With small, flappy ears, short tails and hulking size, mammoths had few predators besides humans. Mammoths relied on their large size and strength to keep themselves safe from predators or other threats, keeping an eye out for danger when in herds. Being herbivores, mammoths ate large amounts of vegetation and fruit, which they often found by using their tusks to part ice and snow in the pursuit of these foods.

Mammoths also used their trunks as a fifth limb in reaching food, comforting loved ones, grasping and in fights against predators. Making great use of their trunks, a traditional sign of mammoth affection was for two mammoths to lock trunks. ^[1] Mammoth parents shared care responsibilities over their young, which they watched over at all times, allowing them some free reign upon their teenage years.

While both male and female mammoths sported long tusks, some exceptions did exist, namely one female individual who was depicted in cave paintings to have no tusks at all. Mammoth males tended to have thicker tusks than females did, and both sexes sported scalp hair, but females tended to have longer scalp hair.

History[]

Mammoths were among the migrating herds of animals that left their homes in the north to flee the ice ages, moving in herds. At some point, mammoths were thought by many animals to be extinct, as none had seen that many for some time, though it became clear that the mammoths were still alive, as they traversed past a number of surprised animals in a massive herd. With time, mammoths remained as numerous as they had been before.

Behind the Scenes[]

The animals depicted in the Ice Age series are the most famous of the mammoth genus, the woolly mammoth, which was approximately the size of a modern-day African elephant.

While Manny is described in the films as weighing eleven tons, and Ellie as ten, woolly mammoths, being the size of African elephants, were highly unlikely to weigh as much, being more in the range of about six tons. Manny's remark of being eleven tons was thus likely speaking in generalities.
