The Final Test Begins! (
Synopsis[]
Three days after the end of the Fourth Phase, Netero hopes that the nine examinees are well rested, stating that the committee-run hotel will act as the location for the final phase. In a large room, with the examiners, examinees, and several officials present, Netero explains that the phase will involve one-on-one matches in a tournament format, taking a sheet off a board to unveil the matchups. With the examinees left surprised and confused by the format, Netero assures them that while it may look intimidating, they only need one win to pass, with the winners dropping out of the bracket and the losers advancing to the next round.
Netero continues by saying that the final round will have one winner and one loser, wondering if they understand the setup yet. Hanzo guesses that only one of them will fail, and Netero quickly confirms it, adding that each person has at least two chances to pass. He asks for any questions, and Bodoro wonders about the bracket's arrangement. Telling himself that he loves Bodoro's fashion sense, Netero replies that it reflects their performance in the exam up to that point, with the best performers receiving the most chances to pass. Killua is left unconvinced and wonders what else is involved, but Netero refuses to answer.
Killua angrily asks why, and Netero explains that the details of their scoring system are classified, refusing to reveal their scores but mentioning that they were judged on three criteria: physical ability, mental ability, and overall impression. He states that physical ability takes into account their strength, agility, endurance, and senses while mental ability measures their focus, flexibility, judgment, and creativity. However, he stresses that overall impression is the deciding factor since they assess their potential as Hunters and consider the opinions of their peers. Killua tells himself that he knows he had a better overall score than Gon and can't believe that they saw more potential in him.
Netero then states that the tournament only has a few simple rules, explaining that they may use any weapons and that they win once their opponent admits defeat. However, he reveals that they will be immediately disqualified if they kill their opponent, causing the exam to end and allowing everyone else to pass. One of the officials announces the first match of Hanzo vs. Gon, and the two examinees walk forward. The official introduces himself as Masta and explains that he will serve as the referee and witness. Hanzo is glad to meet him finally and asks if he enjoyed his adventures during the Fourth Phase. Masta is surprised that Hanzo was aware of him, and Hanzo confirms that he knew examiners followed them during the phase, telling him that while others didn't notice theirs, he wasn't hard to miss. It's revealed that Gon was unaware, and Kurapika turns to a surprised Leorio, saying that he thought he knew about them.
Hanzo confidently says that he must have impressed them during the phase given his position in the bracket, with Masta internally noting how talkative he is. Hanzo then makes sure that their opponent has to be able to admit defeat before a win can be granted, and Masta confirms that they do. Hanzo glances back at Gon and realizes that it's the catch in the rules. Gon tells himself that both of them aren't pushovers as he hopes to confuse Hanzo with his movement while he looks for an opening. As soon as Masta begins the match, Gon quickly dashes away in the other direction, but Hanzo suddenly appears right in front of him and praises Gon's speed before knocking him to the floor with a single strike to the back of his neck and adding that it isn't bad for a kid.
With Kurapika and Leorio left shocked, Killua can't believe that Gon didn't see it coming. Hanzo comments that he would have already won if it were a regular match, sitting Gon up and telling him to shake it off. He notes that Gon is feeling unwell because his brain is moving around in his skull, stressing him that he has no chance against him and telling him to admit defeat. After Gon sticks out his tongue and refuses to do so, Hanzo suddenly strikes him across the head and assures him that his stubbornness will only reduce his chances in the next round. Gon again refuses to surrender, and Hanzo strikes him once more, causing Leorio to point out how serious Hanzo is. However, before Leorio can tell Gon to surrender, Kurapika interrupts him and asks if he would give up if he were in Gon's position. Leorio angrily replies that while he personally wouldn't, they are talking about Gon. Kurapika notes how strange it is that he feels the same way, desperately hoping that Gon surrenders.
Menchi is surprised by Netero's ruthlessness and notes that none of the examinees will surrender without suffering serious injuries, realizing how much Gon will have to endure. As Netero looks on with expressionless eyes, the others watch in silence as Hanzo continues his torture of the helpless Gon, who lies bloody and bruised on the floor. Pokkle and Bodoro can't believe that Gon has endured three hours of it, and as Hanzo tells him to get up, Leorio angrily yells out that he should fight him if he's looking for someone to beat. Hanzo replies that it's only going to get worse, but when Leorio tries to approach him, Masta and another official immediately move in front of him, warning him that Gon will be disqualified if he interferes with the match. Leorio grits his teeth in frustration, but Gon stumbles to his feet and assures him that he's fine. Hanzo glares back at Gon and quickly knocks him to the floor again, kneeling on top of him and threatening to break his left arm. With the others watching nervously, he tells Gon that he means it and again orders him to surrender. After Gon grits his teeth and angrily refuses to do so, the sound of a broken bone echoes through the large room.
