Polka Kakamond is member #4 of the Genius Society, known for killing fellow geniuses and destroying every depiction of herself in the universe.
Description[]
Genius Society #4, known as the Lord of Silence, information on Polka Kakamond is as mysterious as her appearance. She has had her portraits and sculptures destroyed across the universe, and is suspected of being involved in the deaths of many Society members, including Genius Society #27, Emperor Rubert.
Herta is very interested in the Lord of Silence. Although there has been no news from Polka Kakamond for many years, Herta believes that she is still alive. She is elusive, and there is scarce information of her left in the universe. On the other hand, there are many rumors about her: Apparently she was the only one to vote against Elias Salas and probably having something to do with Nihility's Device IX.
If a woman removes her white coat and puts on a flashy candy-colored evening dress and appears in the cosmos with a dagger in hand, witnesses must call for help: The Lord of Silence is likely to target anyone.Profile[]
Polka is a mysterious woman known to have killed other members of the Society. She destroyed every depiction of herself in the known universe, but drew everyone's attention in the process.[1] To hide her identity, she wears a facial recognition filter mesh. She targets individuals close to the borders of the Circle of Knowledge so that the universe remains perfectly determinable and knowable, as expanding and surpassing this circle only creates chaos, which will prematurely lead the universe to Finality.[2]
Her true age is unknown, though she has lived through both Mechanical Emperor's Wars.[3]
Polka is known or believed to have killed the following members of the Society:
- #7 — Bohdan (confirmed), killed several days after proving Phlogiston's existence[4]
- #8 — Lambda (suspected), killed in a volatile explosion[5]
- #? — ??? (confirmed), killed after researching into the Path of Finality[6]
- #27 — Rubert I (confirmed), killed during the first Mechanical Emperor's War[7]
History[]
During the Borderstar Trade War, a shooting took place in the cosmic library Izmael, leading a survivor to escape before being kidnapped by Polka. She killed the survivor, and subsequently the spilled blood was splattered over all the literature.[8]
When the first Mechanical Emperor's War took place, she collaborated with Dongfang Qixing of the IPC to expand her political influence.[9] At the end of war, she killed Rubert I, with HooH slightly affecting the angle of her scalpel as she made the incision in its chest.[10][11]
In the middle of the Scholars' Strife, an Anti-Organic Virus broke out, and Polka stepped in to kill the scholars infected by it.[12]
Sometime after the ascension of Nanook, Polka killed an unnamed Genius Society member with a stutter, who was researching the Path of Finality. Before she took his life, he was able to write one final manuscript, which eventually glitched its way into the Simulated Universe.[6][Note 1]
When Herta sought a fifth member for the Simulated Universe project, she had originally intended for a data compilation of Rubert II to become the fifth member, but the data entity emulating Polka suddenly gained sentience and acted much like her, threatening to kill Herta for closing the borders of the Circle of Knowledge. Herta and the others attempted to plant a trap to make her the fifth member, but the entity refused, believing that they would not be able to due to their differing beliefs. After witnessing a "spectacular" performance, the entity decided to spare them with the rest of their lives as a "tip," warning them that they were lucky she still considered them to be in the circle's boundaries. Before leaving, Polka Kakamond destroyed the remaining Scepter systems inside the Simulated Universe, rendering them unable for Herta to use.[2] It is implied that the data entity was actually the real Polka, as she left a physical message in Herta's Office.[13]
Abilities[]
Knowable Domain[]
Within the Simulated Universe, she is able to create the Knowable Domain, an experimental field where probability and coincidence bear no meaning.[2]
Probability Manipulation[]
Polka is known for her proficiency in manipulating probability, often depicted as a "butterfly" or a "coincidence."[2][14]
Scalpel[]
Her weapon of choice is a scalpel, originating from a physician who killed her president because her lover died in a war.[2]

Trivia[]
- Polka's recurring motifs of probability manipulation and butterflies is based on the butterfly effect, a concept in chaos theory that small changes in initial conditions can create significantly different outcomes, named after the idea of a tornado being influenced by a distant butterfly flapping its wings.
Etymology[]
- Polka is derived from the Czech word (Czech: půlka), meaning "half-step."
- "Kakamond" is likely a portmanteau of "kaka" and "mond."
- The word kaka has multiple meanings depending on the language, such as "brother" in Swahili, "spider" in Cebuano, "parrot in the genus Nestor" in Finnish and Maori, "to rinse" in Hawaiian, and "cake" or "cookie" in various languages.
- Mond is the German word for moon.
Notes[]
- ↑ While an exact date is never given, the mention of Omen Vanguards within the text suggests the manuscript to be written after the rise of Nanook.
