Phoenix Hathaway (né Brooke Hathaway; before transition) is the son of the late Fran Hathaway, the foster son of Darren and Nancy Osborne, and the father of Thierry.

Biography[]

2000s-2018: Early Life[]

Phoenix was born in 2003 to Fran Hathaway. Phoenix was close with his mother in his early childhood, however Fran was sent to prison in 2006. Fran remained in prison beyond her original sentence due to murdering Becca Hayton during a fight. Phoenix is autistic and his difficulties living in a neurotypical world are plentiful, contributing to his timid exterior.

2018-2019: Arrival[]

Phoenix arrived in Hollyoaks to spy on Becca's sister (and Hollyoaks High School teacher) Nancy Osborne. He signed up for one-on-one tutoring sessions with Nancy, leading to Nancy discovering that Phoenix was the son of Fran - who had recently been in contact with her. Phoenix implored Nancy to visit Fran in hospital, with Fran dying seconds after Nancy deciding to forgive her for Becca's murder. Nancy decided to foster Phoenix as he would end up in foster care, despite Nancy's husband Darren Osborne strongly opposing the idea.

Phoenix struggled to adapt to his new life, but was mostly positive during meetings with the social worker. After the Osborne family were approved to foster Phoenix, Nancy enrolled for Phoenix to begin studying at Hollyoaks High School. At school, Phoenix met Oliver Morgan and the pair began a relationship after sharing a mutual attraction towards each other. Phoenix ended up catching Ollie's football coach Buster Smith inappropriately touching him, and assumed that Ollie was gay. Ollie exploded at Phoenix, causing them to split with Ollie and suffer a breakdown. After being comforted by Ollie's friend Imran Maalik, Phoenix began a brief relationship with Imran but broke up with him after discovering that he was acting violently towards his mother Misbah and sister Yasmine. After the truth about Buster's abuse came to light, Phoenix and Ollie reconciled.

In November 2018, Phoenix befriended new student Juliet Quinn. However, Juliet proved to be a false friend and subtly bullied Phoenix. She lied to Phoenix that if he did not sleep with Ollie, he would leave him and made Phoenix paranoid that Ollie was losing interest in him. A few days before the prom, Phoenix was convinced by Juliet to break up with Ollie before he did so first, but Ollie ended up performing a grand gesture to ask him to prom so Phoenix changed his mind. Juliet proved to be a bad influence on Phoenix, convincing him to get drunk and sneak out after being grounded.

2019-2020: Pregnancy[]

Whilst attending the Beatfields Music Festival, Phoenix ended up suffering from sensory overload and had to be taken to a medical tent. Whilst speaking with one of the medics, Phoenix realised that he could be pregnant which was confirmed by a positive test result. Phoenix initially kept the pregnancy secret, but Juliet ended up learning the truth. Juliet lied to Phoenix that Ollie knew of the pregnancy and wanted to break up with him, secretly having taken Ollie's phone and blocked Phoenix. Phoenix planned to undergo a termination but was convinced otherwise by Mercedes McQueen, who helped him tell Nancy about his pregnancy. Ollie learned about the pregnancy and the pair realised what Juliet had done, reuniting them. The pair exposed Juliet, but Phoenix initially refused to forgive her.

Phoenix initially decided to keep the baby, to Ollie's delight. However, at the first scan, Phoenix became self-conscious due to everyone in the waiting room being older than him. When Ollie proposed to him, Phoenix rejected and informed Ollie that he planned to put the baby up for adoption. The pair decided to give the baby to Sienna Blake and Brody Hudson, and Phoenix upset Ollie by cutting him out of his pregnancy in favour of Sienna. Ollie told Phoenix that he wanted to keep the baby, but Phoenix told him that he would have to choose between him or the baby - to which he chose Phoenix. A few weeks later, Phoenix and Juliet reconciled shortly before New Year's.

Ollie developed hopes that Phoenix would decide to keep the baby, which Phoenix was oblivious to. Phoenix ordered a babygro, but told Ollie that he was still planning to put the baby up for adoption. As Ollie told Phoenix of his plan to raise the baby with the help of his father, Phoenix ended up going into labour and gave birth to baby boy. However, Ollie informed him that he could no longer keep the baby, having discovered that Luke had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, which could be genetic. Allowing Ollie to name the baby Thierry after footballer Thierry Henry, Phoenix gave the baby to the baby's new parents: Mal and Zoe.

Phoenix quickly returned to normality: returning to school merely weeks after giving birth, deciding to go vegan and planning to introduce vegan burgers at Burger, She Wrote. However, Ollie struggled and ended up temporarily leaving to visit his mother. When he returned, Ollie began to slightly distance himself from Phoenix. discovered that Ollie had taken ketamine at a rave and Ollie later admitted that he had slept with Juliet, so Phoenix broke up with him. Phoenix decided to form a band with Imran and Sid Sumner, and ended up growing close to Imran. The pair embarked on a second short-term relationship before eventually splitting again.

2021-: Discovering Self[]

Phoenix later ended up befriending Sweater Thunberg stallholder Ripley Lennox, who was non-binary. Phoenix began to question his identity after taking a liking to the male garments at the stall, and related to each aspect when Ripley explained what identifying as non-binary was to Phoenix. Ripley also gave Phoenix advice on how to come out to Juliet and Imran, with the pair taking Phoenix's new identity well. After discussing his relationship with Imran to Ripley, Phoenix began to question if he really loved Imran. The pair ended up splitting and Phoenix eventually began a relationship with Ripley. He also began helping Ripley with running the stall.

Ollie arranged for a visit with Thierry so Luke could meet him, but failed to inform Phoenix. He was left stunned after encountering a now two-year-old Thierry, and began to wonder if they made the right decision in giving him up for adoption. As Phoenix began talking about his future, Ripley wondered where they fit in and ultimately decided to end their relationship with Phoenix and instead remain friends. After being offered an opportunity to work with homeless transgender teenagers, Ripley left the village.

After Nancy left for Detroit to arrange for a heart operation for her and Darren's baby daughter Morgan Osborne, Phoenix attempted to fill her place in the family. He also attempted to find a job within the village, impressing Damon Kinsella at The Love Boat. However, Phoenix struggled with the subsequent responsibilities all at one time. Phoenix's new friend and co-worker Lizzie Chen-Williams helped Phoenix settle into his job at The Love Boat, whilst Darren assured Phoenix that he didn't need to solely take over Nancy's role within the family. When Nancy's nephew Charlie Dean felt distanced from the family over their biological connections, Phoenix often comforted him.

As Phoenix continued to ponder his identity and place in the world, he revealed to Charlie that the name "Brooke" doesn't fit anymore, and neither does a non-binary gender identity. He revealed that he is a transgender man named Phoenix.
