Synopsis for "Soul Possessions part 1: The Butterfly and the Hawk"
Spiral accesses Revanche’s memories of flirting with her lover and rival assassin Matsu’o Tsurayaba in Tokyo years ago. Switching to the video feed from Revanche’s bionic eyes, Spiral sees Revanche about to kill Professor X in his sleep when suddenly the feed cuts out. The next morning, Xavier shows Psylocke a goodbye letter Revanche left him. Unbeknownst to him, Revanche cut out her eyes and left them for Psylocke. In Japan, Matsu’o mournfully recalls he and Revanche promising, for the sake of honor, to kill each other in combat should their employers come into conflict. Spiral appears to Matsu’o and admits to sabotaging his original plans for Revanche. Spiral tells him he has one last chance to do right by Revanche then teleports away. At Xavier’s School, Archangel finds Psylocke training in the Danger Room and invites her to join him for breakfast. Professor X asks Beast to take on a leadership role in Cyclops’s absence. He also reveals the White Queen left him legal control of her school for mutants, the Massachusetts Academy. Meanwhile, Gambit notices Rogue has been acting strange since their return from New Orleans. In Japan, Matsu’o remembers facing off with Revanche when her boss Nyoirin opposed his organization, the Hand. During the fight, she slipped and fell off a cliff. To save her life, Matsu’o made a bargain with Spiral. Just then, Revanche bursts into Matsu’o’s home. In Salem Center, Psylocke shows Revanche’s eyes to Archangel and believes they hold the key to resolving her identity crisis. Back in Japan, Revanche confronts Matsu’o over letting Spiral switch her mind with Psylocke’s, and he confesses to trying to mold Psylocke into a substitute for her. Dying of the Legacy Virus, Revanche convinces Matsu’o to kill her, both to end her suffering and to redeem himself. In the car with Archangel near Salem Center, Psylocke senses Revanche’s death and crashes the car into a tree. She and Archangel are unharmed, but she wonders how she will learn who originally swapped her and Revanche’s minds. Spiral appears, takes credit, and offers to help.

- Mojo and Spiral implanted Psylocke's original body with bionic eyes in New Mutants Annual #2.
- The White Queen was left comatose after the events of Uncanny X-Men #281-284.
