Synopsis for "The Tender and the Vulgar"

In the Brazilian rainforest, Sunspot lifts a fallen tree off his friend Christina Aguilar. Afterward, she realizes her engagement ring is missing, and he deduces the tree was rigged to fall over as a trap meant for him. They return to her family’s villa and have dinner, but the meal is interrupted when a gang of anti-mutant thugs breaks in and attacks. Initially, Sunspot is unable to use his powers because he has not absorbed enough solar energy, and the thugs beat him up. Then, he notices one of them has Christina’s ring and realizes it was they who set the trap in the forest. Anger triggers his powers, and he uses his super-strength to overpower them all. Later, the police take the thugs into custody, and Sunspot gives the ring back to Christina. The family sits down to eat, but Christina’s sister Euphy nervously drops the food. She and Sunspot argue about feeling like outsiders, and he leaves to avoid further risking the family’s safety.
