Synopsis for "Worlds Gone Mad"
In the House of Heroes, Justice League Incarnate try to fight off a seemingly endless horde of Parademons, but their numbers are too great and it is only a matter of time before they sieze control of a critical system. Orion demands that they pilot the House of Heroes out of The Bleed, and despite Aquawoman's reservations, the team admit they have no other options.
Meanwhile, the away team should have followed Darkseid through his Boom Tube to the location of the crack, but they accidentally fell through a gap in the boundary between the physical and spiritual realms and ended up on the twilight world Earth 13. They contact their allies the League of Shadows, and go to meet them at the Tavern of Mystery, where the League have gathered the heroes of Earth 13 for a full assault on Darkseid. Hellblazer greets them and tells them to wait while the rest of the team finish setting up the necessary magic to track Darkseid. Captain Carrot has a panic attack as magicians are rabbits' natural enemies, but Avery is able to calm and comfort him. Doctor Multiverse attempts to flirt with President Superman but he shuts it down immediately, even refusing to call her by her first name when she explicitly asks him to, and she walks off to try the karaoke. Batman encourages Superman to return her advances, and when Calvin replies that they are on a mission to save the Multiverse, Thomas tells the younger man that there will always be a mission, and that he needs to live his life when he can. Superman goes after Maya, but he bumps into Fate who picks a fight with him. Superdemon arrives and breaks it up, and chases Fate away.
In a back room, Annataz has set up for a séance which will allow them to track Darkseid and transport all the assembled heroes to his location. However, the séance reveals that Darkseid is at war with the Great Darkness' many servants across the infinite worlds, and their forces will not be enough. The members of Justice League Incarnate burst into flames and disappear, transported to Limbo at the edge of the Multiverse.
In Limbo, Darkseid battles Asmodel, an Angel of Heaven who has been seduced and brainwashed by the Queen of the Sheeda, who is herself a servant of the Darkness. Doctor Multiverse spots the crack and the heroes rush to it while Darkseid is distracted, but Maya warns Superman that it may become necessary for the good of the Multiverse to seal the crack and leave Barry Allen trapped on the other side. Suddenly, The Batwoman Who Laughs emerges from a portal, also chasing the crack. Unlike the original Batman Who Laughs she is not a creature of the Dark Multiverse, but the actual Katherine Kane of Earth 11, indicating that the Multiverse itself is being corrupted by darkness. She reaches the crack as Darkseid kills Asmodel, and Doctor Multiverse attempts to once again destabilise the crack and send it to another universe beyond either of their reach.
Back on the House of Heroes, Orion manages to get the House moving and Justice League Incarnate prepare to ventilate the decks to flush out the Parademons. However, The Batwoman Who Laughs appears on the bridge, sent there by Doctor Multiverse's attempt to move the crack. She blasts Orion, who loses control of the House, sending it careening through the Bleed; and to make matters worse, Grail and Kalibak manage to break through the doors into the bridge, leading their Parademons to attack the heroes. With a full scale battle broken out in the House, Dino-Cop activates the House's self destruct to keep its technology out of Darkseid's hands.
Doctor Multiverse and Superman wake up in a suburban neighborhood on an unknown parallel Earth and realise that their powers aren't working. Meanwhile, the other members of the away team have been scattered across the Multiverse.
Notes
- The history of Earth 11 is corrupted by the Great Darkness' power so that Batwoman/Kate Kane is turned into an evil version of herself known as the Batwoman Who Laughs.
- According to Thomas Wayne, the Dark Multiverse is sealed off but it is actually false.[2]
- The "House of Villains" protocol involves the House of Heroes' self-destruction as a consequence of an enemy invasion.
Trivia
- The Batwoman Who Laughs' altered history clearly mirrors the Batman Who Laughs' as both the Dark Knights are turned into supervillains by the death of their Joker.
- The Batwoman Who Laughs' flashbacks are homages to Detective Comics #33, Batman: The Killing Joke and The Batman Who Laughs #1.
- The genderbent Joker of Earth 11 heavily resembles Bianca Steeplechase, the Joker of Earth 37.
- There are many reference to the Vertigo continuity in this story:
- The Tavern of Mystery is the Earth 13 version of the House of Mystery that is run by the Cain and Abel of this universe;
- This is actually a reference to the events of House of Mystery (Volume 2) where the House of Mystery became a pub visited by patrons from across the Pre-Flashpoint Multiverse;
- The password of the Tavern is Ogitrev which is Vertigo spelled backwards;
- Hellblazer and Annataz organizing a séance, using Demento as its conduit, where the Great Darkness' servants are glimpsed, and the Leaguers catching fire before being displaced to the Limbo Sphere mirrors the events of Swamp Thing Vol 2 #50 where John Constantine and other magicians did the same, using Mento as a conduit, to discover the masterplan of the Great Darkness which burned to death both Zatara and Sargon the Sorcerer.
- The Legion of the Strange team is a pastiche of the Doom Patrol as well as an homage to the same team from one of Tim Hunter's Thousand Worlds[3] which originally appeared as an imaginary story from Doom Patrol Vol 2 #53 and has been the main inspiration for Earth 13.
- Demento is Earth 13 counterpart of Mento/Steve Dayton.
- The Tavern of Mystery is the Earth 13 version of the House of Mystery that is run by the Cain and Abel of this universe;
- Doctor Multiverse's pose before displacing everyone through the Multiverse is obviously a homage to Doctor Manhattan.
- The panel of the heroes seeing a vision of Darkseid battling the Great Darkness is a homage to the cover of Justice League of America #21.
