Alexei II, true name Michał Franciszek Goleniewski, is a minor character in The New Order: Last Days of Europe, a Hearts of Irons 4 mod. He is a side protagonist of After Midnight, the leader of the post-Midnight version of the Russian Empire and the potential leader of the Russian People's Empire if the player chose to play as Alexei II and successfully reunified Russia.
Overview[]
Goleniewski is an eccentric former Polish NKVD agent who has rebelled against the Holy Russian Empire and its remnants. However, Goleniewski chooses to mock their fanatical belief by proclaiming himself as the returned Prince Alexei and thus Tsar Alexei II.
He also builds his own Russian Empire albeit with a streak of socialism, attempting to build a benevolent version of the Russian Empire and save everyone.
He is also the archenemy of Andrey Dikiy, who proclaims Goleniewski as a fake Tsar and tries to eliminate him, even though Dikiy himself is a hypocrite with self-serving purpose to do so.
Biography[]
Events[]
After the death of Taborisky, Goleniewski emerged from the chaos after he survived the Holy Russian Empire's purge against Irkutsk's NKVD, thanks to being low-profile. He immediately seized the debacle as his chance to start his rebellion in Irkutsk, which he took over via raising a monarchist coup.
However, using not just any other way, Goleniewski won his support via declaring himself as Prince Alexei, who returned back from his false demise once Taborisky had died. He even made himself a Romanov-styled beard and made good use of his brilliant acting skills to make himself seemed authentic.
Nonetheless, Goleniewski only used this ruse to start his own nobler version of Alexei's survival and fight against the crumbling Holy Russian Empire, rather than supporting their ideas of Alexei's survival. He soon declared himself as Tsar Alexei II while using his intel network for gathering information about the Holy Russian Empire's atrocities.
The first thing "Alexei II" had done was to arrest Irkutsk's corrupt governor who was serving the Holy Russian Empire. He declared that Taborisky and his followers had been stealing Alexei's name to commit horrible atrocities and taint Romanov's name.
Enraged, the governor declared that he was an imposter, but "Alexei" immediately listed every single crime against humanity and corruption that governor had committed, with perfect accuracy, much to the governor's shock. Everyone else, including the governor's guards, were impressed after they listented to his speech and were convinced that he really was Alexei returned. The governor was struck speechless in horror before he was betrayed by his minions and executed immediately.
Following the coup, "Alexei II" had declared a new Russian Empire in Irkutsk, albeit with a socialist streak. Many generals of the disbanded Far East warlords also joined him, including Arkady Apollonov from Yagoda's forces, Leonid Cherkyn from Chita's White Army, and Pavel Adelgeim who was formerly a general of the Divine Mandate. Several monarchists had also pledged allegiance to "Alexei II" after they were convinced that he was Alexei.
Dpesite being an imposter whose facade could not fool everyone, Alexei II's rule had been a combination of absolute monarchy and some socialism, as he declared a policy of redistributing the lands and collectivizing properties. This made his monarchist supporters rather confused, but they still remained utmost loyal to him and believed him to be Romanov's new future.
Meanwhile, in Buryatia, Andrey Dikiy was horrified after he heard about Alexei's "return" and realized that he was an imposter, as Dikiy never believed in Taborisky's delusions and merely followed him for power. Dikiy saw Goleniewski as his greatest obstacle on his quest for a lifelong dictatorship, and he immediately declared Goleniewski as a fake Tsar before preparing to fight him.
Although, Dikiy's action was fully hypocritical, as he was shamelessly using Taborisky's version of Alexei myth for self-serving purpose and deception. In contrast, Goleniewski was feeling guilty for his lies, but he knew he had to do it for the greater good and everyone's happiness, making him a more selfless and benevolent kind of liar.
In-game[]
After the players successfully finished their reunification Russia as Alexei II, the new Russia will be called as Russian People's Empire, a quasi-socialist version of the Russian Empire that ruled by its benevolent People's Tsar, completely different from Taborisky's image of a racist and despot.
Everyone was still curious about his past and identity, with some suspecting that he might be an imposter, but with his benevolent rule being real, all of Russia still remained faithful to him.
Personality[]
Trivia[]
- Goleniewski's feud with Dikiy is an ironic twist on the conflict between Sablin and Yagoda.
- Goleniewski's forces resides in Irkutsk while starting a benevolent quasi-socialistic monarchy, while Dikiy is in Burytia where he rules as an Esoteric Nazi dictator.
- The real-life counterpart of Goleniewski was neither as heroic nor as honorable as his TNO counterpart. He was infamous for being an opportunistic turncoat of the Soviet Union, who had been a drug addict and once collaborated with the Nazi Germany. During the Cold War, Goleniewski defected to the United States and rattled out several KGB agents such as George Blake as a token of his "sincerity" towards CIA.
- In 1964, presumably as an effect of his drug addiction, Goleniewski began to proclaim himself as Prince Alexei, the only son of Tsar Nikolai II, claiming that he survived his family's execution thanks to his servants.
