“ | Oh yeah, that's great. Great for you! Yeah sure! Everybody loves you! People always love the stupid one! But nobody ever loves the jerk! Everybody hates me! Oh, come on! Let's face the truth! You've been carrying me, I know! I know that. It's you they love, but I need love too! I just want to be loved and important like you! Is that so wrong? | „ |

Ren Höek is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Stimpy) of the controversial American Nickelodeon series The Ren & Stimpy Show.
He is one of two main protagonists in the series and the Adult Party Cartoon spin-off series. However, he can sometimes be more of a villainous protagonist than an actual hero. Regardless, he has performed some heroic deeds.
He was voiced by John Kricfalusi from 1991-1993, and was later voiced by Billy West (who also voiced Stimpy in same series) from 1993-1996. John K. would portray Ren again in 2003 in the Adult Party Cartoon, While Chris Edgerly voices the character in Nicktoons MLB.
Appearance[]
Ren is a scrawny 17-year old, creepy-looking, Hungarian asthma-hound chihuahua with a fairly long, rat-like, pink tail (which disappears constantly to the point of it not being seen in the later series).
Personality[]
Ren is portrayed as being greedy, insane, delusional, paranoid, intolerant, violent and insecure (in short, mentally unstable). Whenever Ren's upset he lashes out his anger on his best friend Stimpy usually by simply slapping him in the face, or by brutally beating him up and treats Stimpy like a School Bully. Ren's most famous personality trait, however, is his short and violent temper because Stimpy keeps irritating him which caused Ren to go completely, dangerously insane.
Biography[]
He has a Swedish cousin named Svën Höek, a plump, idiotic chihuahua who is very similar to Stimpy. In the Spümcø era of The Ren and Stimpy Show and Adult Party Cartoon, Ren was voiced by John Kricfalusi in "a bad imitation of Peter Lorre." In the Games Animation era of the Nickelodeon series, Ren was voiced by Billy West using a combination of Burl Ives, Kirk Douglas, and a slight "south of the border accent", after John Kricfalusi and the others at Spümcø were fired. West also did Ren's maniacal laughter, throughout the series (including when John Kricfalusi did Ren's voice).
Ren personality remained unchanged for years. But one thing never changed: he is crazy, insane, neurotic that even in extreme cases can become totally a rabid beast (as seen in the APC episode "Ren Seeks Help"). His antagonistic role can range from a simple pull of a real villain, and that shows in many episodes from the original version as "Best Man Friend" to the most recent "Ren Seeks Help". If the antagonistic side of Ren varies, so does his heroic side.

“ | [looking over to Stimpy] His fan club. How they love him. Look at him lying there asleep! The idol of millions! He's a fool! Blind, silly little fool! How easily I could end the farce with these hands, these dirty hands! [in a demonic voice] And with these hands I hold the fate of millions. [in a disturbingly calm voice] They think he's a god, but he's as mortal as we. I know. [stares at Stimpy's neck] Just one quick twist, and it's over. Just one. | „ |

“ | You! Both of you! Oh, what I'm gonna do to you. I'm so angry! First, I'm gonna tear your lips out. Yeah, that's what I'm gonna do. And then I'm gonna gouge your eyes out. Yeah, that's what I'm gonna do. Yeah, you're scared, huh? Next, I'm gonna tear your arms out of the sockets. And you wanna know what else? I'm gonna hit ya, and you're gonna fall, and I'm gonna look down, and I'm gonna laugh. But first, FIRST! I gotta take a whiz, don't you go anywhere, you stay right here, right on this spot, I'll be back. | „ |

Trivia[]
- Although he's one of the two protagonists of the series, he is sometimes the antagonist.
- Series creator John K. prided himself on keeping Ren & Stimpy's animation style inconsistent, meaning there is no default appearance for Ren.
- Frank Welker, the late Joe Alaskey, Carlos Alazraqui, Pat Fraley, Hal Rayle, Patrick Pinney, Jack Angel, and Townsend Coleman auditioned for the voice of Ren.
- The origin of the gag of Ren being referred to as a "mosquito" could have been inspired by how many of the cast and crew members had at first believed him to be a fly or a mosquito after seeing his concept art.
- It is implied several times throughout the show that Ren may be older than Stimpy, perhaps by a large margin. This is supported by how in Ren's Retirement, Ren is stated to be ten - 70 in dog years - while Stimpy is said in "Stimpy's Big Day" to be three - 28 in cat years.
- In "I Was a Teenage Stimpy" Stimpy was shown to go through puberty, with Ren taking on the role of a conservative father to him, being happy that once Stimpy 'grew up' he'd have somebody to take care of him.
- Furthermore, his voice is deeper in an attempt to make him sound older in the Adult Party Cartoon version.
