Otto Edethal is the overarching protagonist of the 2024 animated feature film The Garfield Movie, a film adaptation of Jim Davis' comic strip Garfield. He is the boyfriend of Ethel Edethal.
He is voiced by Ving Rhames, who also voiced Cobra Bubbles in Lilo & Stitch (2002 film) and Thunderbolt in The Wild Robot, and portrayed Luther Stickell in the Mission Impossible franchise.
Biography[]
Past[]
Otto was the former mascot bull of Lactose Farms. He was in a relationship with Ethel, a famous cow. When someone took over the farm, Otto has been kicked out and been separated from Ethel. Since then, he's been watching the farm and seeing Ethel from a distance.
The Garfield Movie[]
One day, Otto was approached by Garfield, his father, Vic, and best friend, Odie, all of whom wanted his help to break into Lactose Farms and steal a large quantity of the farm's milk for a vengeful cat, Jinx. He disagrees at first. He tells them of his backstory. After hearing how tough Otto's life have been, the trio agrees to break Ethel out if he helps them on their mission.
When Garfield and Vic clash with each other while planning for the heist, Otto and Odie ties the two to a tree in order for them to work as a team. After they were able to talk about their past and learning about why Vic abandoned Garfield, the two were able to make peace. Otto and Odie releases them, stating that they pass the test and are ready to pull off the heist.
On the day of the mission, Otto stays outside while Garfield, Vic, and Odie infiltrate the farm. The trio accidentally ignored Otto's warning of going through the cheese and butter room, but they were able to survive the factory's dangerous equipment. When the trio reached the loading dock to get the keys to free Ethel, they were caught by Marge Malone, animal control officer and Otto's arch-nemesis. She has already got the keys after getting a tip from Jinx about their plan through animal translator. Seeing that the mission has gone wrong, Otto tries to distract security to give them time to escape and he briefly reunites with Ethel, but the security guards start beating him up and Otto was able to get away. Marge has already called the pound in advance and captures Garfield and Odie. Vic leaves them behind despite his son's pleas, stealing the milk truck to deliver it to Jinx.
After Garfield and Otto were bailed out by their owner, Jon Arbuckle, they discovered Jinx's plan after the milk heist. They learned that Jinx intends to throw Vic off a high bridge from a train after she and her henchman, Nolan and Roland, captures him when he met up with them with the stolen milk. Garfield and Odie recruits Otto's help to rescue Vic and they went to the train. Seeing that Garfield, Vic, and a reformed Nolan and Roland were falling from the sky after being thrown out of the train, Otto was able to save them all including Jinx, who was accidentally knocked out herself, and they all land on the net setup by Odie.
They later return to the farm by the milk truck and bring in Jinx to Marge in exchange for Ethel's release, finally reuniting her with Otto.
Otto and Ethel later attends Garfield's birthday party at his and Jon's house with the couple dancing.
Physical appearance[]
Otto is a large, purple Scottish Highland bull with shaggy hair, a broken right horn and a ring around his nose.
Personality[]
Otto is at first a grumpy bull who wants to be alone after he was removed from the farm. He wants nothing more than to see Ethel again. He changed his mood when he took part of Garfield, Vic, and Odie's mission which will allow him to reunite with Ethel.
