Orion Pax, better known as Optimus Prime, is the main protagonist of the Aligned continuity of the Transformers franchise. He is the leader of the Autobots and a true warrior during the war on Cybertron.

Before the war, Optimus was a clerk who wanted to bring equality and freedom for his people, But after his former sworn brother-turn-arch-nemesis Megatron became the tyrannical leader of the Decepticons, he became a member of the Autobots to fight against him, eventually taking over leadership and becoming Optimus Prime.

He is voiced by Peter Cullen, who has voiced Optimus Prime in the Generation One cartoon, both the original and rebooted Transformers Movie series, and the Prime Wars Trilogy

History[]

Backstory[]

As revealed in The Covenant of Primus, Optimus Prime was originally the Thirteenth Prime, the last of the original 13 Primes. He functioned as a mediator between the other Primes. After tragedy and infighting tore the Primes apart, Optimus decided to be reborn as an ordinary Cybertronian, in order to know them better, and requested to Alpha Trion that his name be erased from the records. Optimus was reincarnated as Orion Pax, and the reborn Cybertronian was left fighting for in life in the wilds outside of Iacon and was found by Trion. Orion became simply a humble clerk of the Iacon Hall of Records, under Alpha Trion's guidance.

As seen in flashback in One Shall Rise, in the waning years of the Golden Age, the more Orion learned about his people's past, the more he realized the inequality among the masses. Orion was inspired by the gladiator Megatronus, and began corresponding with him. Together, they vowed to bring freedom to the people, and became as close as brothers. However, after Megatronus shortened his name to Megatron, and Orion and Megatron faced the High Council, Megatron vowed to overthrow them by force, and demanded to be the next Prime. Orion, who did not believe in violence instead persuaded the Council with a noble speech, and the council decided Orion should be the next Prime.

Megatron jealously severed his ties with Optimus, as he would become known, and began the Great War. During the War, Optimus had to eject the Allspark from Cybertron for it's own protection, with the help of Alpha Trion.

Exodus[]

Note: Exodus tells it's own account of Orion Pax's backstory, and of the Autobots evacuation from Cybertron, which, particularly the latter parts, conflict with the Cybertron games.

In this version, Optimus prime started out as a data clerk who feels dissatisfied with the caste system, is assigned to eavesdrop on Megatron's political speeches and file them appropriately for the High Council's knowledge. Megatron's stated goals of a free Cybertron, with each individual determining his own path in life, is highly appealing to Orion. Confused, Orion turns for guidance to his supervisor and mentor, Alpha Trion... who unbeknownst to Orion and everyone else still alive, is the last surviving member of the original 13 Transformers. As the scribe of past, present, and future, Alpha Trion knows that some great destiny awaits both Megatron and Orion Pax, but does not know what it is. Speaking cryptically to his younger colleague, Alpha Trion encourages Orion Pax to monitor this new upstart.

Orion makes contact with Megatron's fledgling organization, in the process enjoying his little tastes of breaking rules and acting beyond the normal limits of his station. The two find broad agreement in the need for a new form of Cybertronian government, though Megatron favors confrontation and revolution, whereas Orion hopes to inspire the masses to change the system from within. The two also engage in nonstop verbal sparring and (would-be) witty repartee. Megatron's team includes the devious spymaster Soundwave and his army of Minicons, and the amoral mad scientist Shockwave.

When Orion vocally defends Megatron in a dispute on the Cybertronian datanet, he inadvertently "outs" himself as being part of the organization and is soon viewed as just as much a revolutionary. As their movement gains power, it also grows more violent: Saboteurs professing allegiance to Megatron commit multiple bombings across the planet, including destroying the Six Lasers Over Cybertron amusement park. Megatron repeatedly (and seemingly quite earnestly) swears not to know who committed these crimes and disavows them. But he cannot hide his own involvement in the kidnapping of Sentinel Prime which carried out with cooperation from Sentinel's own Seeker bodyguards.

Chief among these bodyguards is Starscream, who is disgusted by Sentinel's show of cowardice during the kidnapping but still resents the upending of his past secure position due to Megatron's actions. He flirts with joining Megatron's forces, but also makes sure to dispatch all his loyal Seekers to Trypticon Station: a floating strategic asset bearing a powerful secret that he understands and that Megatron, for the moment, does not.

In the hopes of preventing all-out war, Alpha Trion helps Orion and Megatron secure an audience before the High Council in order to plead their case. The Council members are hostile from the start to any notion of change and view Megatron as nothing but a criminal. For his part, Megatron continues to disown most (but not all) of the violence being committed in his name but continues to call for the total removal of the caste system, including the Council itself. His words feed on the resentment of the underclasses in his audience, and he accepts a term his followers have coined to mockingly declare themselves as the bad guys—"Decepticon". When it is Orion's turn to speak, by contrast, he makes a more noble appeal to the broader spectrum of society. He points out that earlier generations of Cybertronians would never have been able to repel the ancient invasion of the Quintessons if they had been constrained by such a caste system. He proclaims their fuller potential as a race if each individual were to be acknowledged as an autonomous robot, using the ancient contraction "Autobot" as an expression of that ideal. High Council member Halogen at last speaks, and he grants that the two radicals might have a point, and that Cybertronian society might have become too static and stratified for its own good. Recognizing the depth of the crisis that their world faces, Halogen asserts that what they need is new visionary leadership to guide a social rebirth—and on that note, the Council proclaims Orion Pax to now be Optimus Prime, the new leader of all Cybertron, with his first mission being the retrieval of the long lost Matrix of Leadership.

Megatron is livid at the elevation of his former colleague, believing it to have been a set-up from Orion all along. He kills Halogen at once, but as both sides marshal for war, Optimus is at least able to convince Megatron, in perhaps a final gesture of respect for civilization, not to commit further violence within the Council halls. Instead, the two sides retreat...with High Council members Contrail and Ratbat aligning with Megatron's Decepticons.

The war that follows is brutal and largely one-sided. The Autobots retain control of Iacon, as well as Kalis and the key asset of its underground fusion reactor that powers their war effort; the Decepticons take over practically the rest of the planet. Those who don't pick a side quickly die in the crossfire. Autobot special teams such as the Wreckers (led by the mighty, hammer-bearing warrior Ultra Magnus) manage to hold their own against hulking Decepticon combiners such as Devastator. Some battle sites, such as Praxus, are so thoroughly devastated that the dead can never be counted and no one will ever know who won. Out of desperation, the Autobots launch the AllSpark into space to keep Megatron from gaining control of the source of Transformer life. It is in that battle that Bumblebee has his vocal circuits painfully destroyed.

Seeking a new advantage, Megatron orders Starscream to give him access to the secret of Trypticon Station: its stockpile of Dark Energon, the power-enhancing evil essence of Unicron himself. Megatron's "darkened" Decepticons now have a combat edge necessary to overwhelm the struggling Autobots. To accelerate the process, Megatron seeks control of the Plasma Energy Chamber, which would allow him to use his Dark Energon supplies to turn the energon core of Cybertron into an unlimited font of the foul substance—permanently empowering his own forces while starving the Autobots to death. But in order to activate the Plasma Energy Chamber, he needs to acquire the Code Keys of Justice and Power. He eventually acquires both—one of them was stored inside Sentinel Prime's chest, and Megatron resolved that problem by defeating the former leader in combat and hacking him apart.

Before Megatron can fully activate the Plasma Energy Chamber, Teletraan-1 reactivates Cybertron's long-disused ultimate guardian, Omega Supreme. Just by transforming from city mode to rocket ship mode, Omega nearly crushes Megatron and the Decepticons to death, and after a successful takeoff, it almost seems like he will be able to fly the Plasma Energy Chamber to safety. But Starscream and his Seekers manage to shoot down the colossal craft, and at the crater of its impact, neither the Autobots nor even Omega Supreme's robot mode can prove to be a match for a Dark Energon-empowered Megatron. Omega Supreme is defeated, and Megatron acquires the Plasma Energy Chamber. Ratchet manages to save Omega's life—barely—but nothing can stop Megatron from tainting the core of Cybertron.

Optimus and the Autobots (including Jetfire and Bumblebee) struggle their way to the core, avoiding infection by Dark Energon along the way. Once at the core, Bumblebee manages to extract the Plasma Energy Chamber, and Optimus receives a mental communication from the core itself. Now that the source of Dark Energon contamination has been removed, the core will eventually be able to heal itself...but that may take centuries, and during that time, the core will not be able to generate enough energon to sustain the full Cybertronian population. Most Cybertronians will either have to abandon the planet until it heals, or risk starvation. To show him not to lose hope, the core bestows upon Optimus Prime the Matrix of Leadership.

Seeing that the planet will soon be uninhabitable, Optimus orders a mass evacuation of the Autobot fleet—but most of the ships are shot down by Trypticon Station. One Autobot vessel, the Eight Track, is able to link up to Trypticon Station and force it to crash...whereupon the station transforms into a bipedal reptilian monster and goes on a rampage.

Alpha Trion grows ever more despairing for the planet he has tended for unimaginable millennia, and he puts into place a radical plan: the construction of the largest spaceship in Cybertronian history, the Ark, on which most of the Autobots may escape. Ultra Magnus, his Wreckers, and a rebuilt Omega Supreme volunteer to stay behind and see to what little territory the Autobots still hold. Despite Optimus's strong wishes, Alpha Trion refuses to leave Cybertron and declares the time has come for his old friend truly to make his own command decisions without the advice from a bygone era.

As most of the Autobots flee the planet aboard the Ark, Megatron commands Trypticon to transform into a Nemesis-class supercruiser in which he and most of the Decepticons will give pursuit. Megatron leaves Shockwave behind as dictator of the dying planet, with orders that he is to have exterminated all remaining Autobots by the time Megatron returns. With the Nemesis in hot pursuit, the Ark makes for the only possible avenue of survival: the last intact spacebridge, for which there is no guarantee the artifact will even function, as none alive know how to use it. But as the two giant spaceships get within range of the spacebridge, it does indeed activate and teleport them...somewhere.

War For Cybertron[]

In the waning days of the War on Cybertron, Optimus and Ratchet rescued a young Autobot called Bumblebee, who revealed he was a messenger, and told them that Zeta Prime was dead. Optimus suspected Megatron's hand, and was informed the High Council had gone into hiding. Optimus believed that the Council would emerge during a safer time and formed a team with Bumblebee and Ratchet. They drove to the Decagon, where they found Ironhide battling Starscream's forces. After assisting him in defeating the army, they confronted Starscream within the Decagon. After the trio drove off Starscream, a hologram of Zeta Prime's face appeared in the centre of the room, revealing that he was held in the Kaon prison complex.

Optimus, Bumblebee and Sideswipe allowed themselves to be captured to infiltrate the facility. The Decepticons prepared to execute them, but Air Raid helped them escape, though he himself was captured. While sneaking through the corridors, the three managed to free Air Raid, and the other prisoners. They continued through the hallways, and finally located the room where Zeta is being held, only to face Soundwave. The Decepticon hid behind a force field, sending his minions out to fight for him, only venturing out to administer repairs. Though Soundwave and his minions retreated, the damage was done, and Zeta Prime died before Optimus could free him.

Optimus brought Zeta's corpse to the site of the hiding High Council. Optimus begged them for guidance, but the Council stated that their mission was to choose the Primes, not to lead them. They then told him that Optimus himself is a Prime, and that he had changed the lives around him. Optimus was then told that Megatron had corrupted the core of Cybertron, and that he was the one that could remove this blight. He took this burden and responsibility, then was told by the Council that he was now Optimus Prime, the last Prime.

For this mission, Optimus selected Ironhide and Warpath, and the team ventured to the entrance of the core, where a corrupted Omega Supreme was being tortured. After a prolonged battle, the Autobots defeated the torturers and freed Omega Supreme from the Dark Energon influence. Omega Supreme escaped, and the Autobots found some space slugs to use as steeds. They journeyed to the core and defeated a corrupted slug. The core itself had become contaminated, and the only solution was for the core to reboot, which would take millions of years, during which the planet would be uninhabitable, and Optimus realised that the Autobots would have to leave their home. Before shutting down, the core revealed the Matrix of Leadership, which it installed inside Optimus Prime's chest.

Optimus arrived back at Iacon, where he ordered all Autobots to evacuate the planet. Megatron announced that everyone must stay or face destruction, and fired a massive cannon installed in the Dark Energon space station. Optimus Prime ordered Air Commander Silverbolt to shut down the cannon with his team. They succeeded, and the station crashed into Iacon. Optimus, Bumblebee, and Ironhide discovered that the "space station" was a giant Decepticon, Trypticon. They managed to defeat the heavily-armed menace, with Optimus landing the final blow with his axe. The Autobots celebrated their victory, but noticed that they had to evacuate as well. Optimus revealed a massive starship called the Ark, a ship still under construction that would allow them to take Cybertron's legacy with them.

Fall Of Cybertron[]

As the Ark came close to being completion, Optimus was alerted to the fact that Grimlock's team had deserted their post and the Decepticons were consequently attacking with giant Warp Cannons. He made haste back to Autobot City where he sent Sideswipe, Jazz, and Cliffjumper off in search of the Lightning Strike Coalition before joining Warpath in fending off the Decepticons attacking the nerve center. When it turned out they didn't have enough energon for the defences, Optimus and Perceptor decided to divert some of the energon from Ark.

With Perceptor's help, Optimus got an old artillery piece working and reached the neutron cannon which he used to take out some of the attackers before running out of energon. At that point he was drawn to the city core, where he managed to awaken Metroplex. Optimus guided the giant in destroying the Warp Cannons, but the last of them felled Metroplex, forcing Optimus to go inside it himself.

He didn't get very far before encountering Starscream and the Combaticons who took him prisoner. Dragged before Megatron, Optimus was only saved by the timely reactivation of Metroplex. Once Megatron was a messy stain on the ground, Prime strongly recommended Starscream and the others leave. Some time later, Jazz and Cliffjumper reported that they'd found a massive energon lake, and Optimus organized a transport to pick it up. During a Decepticon attack on Trypticon's crash site, Optimus was contacted by Autobots guarding the site who said that Megatron was alive.

His request for confirmation was given by none other than Megatron himself, who killed the Autobots who contacted Prime. Recognizing that the Decepticons would only try to retrieve Trypticon's power core if their energon levels were dangerously low, Optimus offered a ceasefire to share what was left, but Megatron rejected his offer, saying that Optimus and the Autobots were responsible for Cybertron's death.

When he was contacted by Grimlock's team who reported Shockwave's experiments, Optimus ordered them back to base, only for Grimlock to ignore him. The Ark was eventually launched thanks to a last-minute sacrifice by Metroplex, but didn't get far before the Decepticons caught up in the Nemesis and attacked it. Optimus headed to the engine room to assist with the defenses there, only to encounter Megatron himself.

As the two fought, Bumblebee threw himself in front of a shot meant for Optimus, and the young bot's sacrifice sent an enraged Optimus back into battle against his nemesis. The pair's fight wasn't yet finished when both they and their ships were sucked into the space bridge portal that eventually leads both cybertronian factions to a planet it's inhabitants call earth.

Transformers: Prime[]

Upon their arrival to Earth, Optimus and his team came into contact with the United States government where they were granted a formerly abandoned missile silo as a base they can stay in which they reconstructed into one they would name Autobot Outpost Omega One and were assigned an agent named William Fowler as their personal liaison whenever the Decepticons are doing something.

At some point later Optimus transmitted a secret message across the galaxy advising any Autobot refugees to travel to Earth and to join them. This message was later discovered by Arcee and Cliffjumper journeyed to Earth via Space Bridge and joined Team Prime.

Quotes[]

For most, over control of our world supply of energon. The fuel and life-blood of all Autobots and Decepticons alike. The combat was fierce and endured for centuries. In the begining I fought alongside one who I considered a brother. But in war, ideals can be corrupted. And it was thus that Megatron lost his way.
~ Optimus about Cybertron War.
Ratchet: You know your problem, Optimus? For such a big, strong bot, you're soft. You didn't pound Megatron into scrap when you had the chance...many chances, in fact.
Optimus Prime: I'm afraid that the synthetic energon has impaired your judgment, old friend.
~ Optimus to Ratchet corrupted by the synthetic energon.
Optimus Prime: I bore Skyquake no malice, and I regret the role I played in his demise, so I will appeal to you as I once did your twin turn your back on the Decepticon cause and help me end this war, for his sake and for all who have fallen.
Dreadwing: You saved my life today. I will terminate you the next time we meet.
Optimus Prime: So be it, Dreadwing.
~ Optimus to Dreadwing.
The Dark Star Saber and the bounty hunters has been secured aboard on my ship and Starscream remains catatonic.
~ Optimus to Team Bee after defeating Starscream.
Optimus Prime: I would transport you but...

Buzzstrike: That's okay. We don't want to be anywhere near Starscream.
Optimus Prime: As I suspected. I hope you find the peace you deserve. Farewell.
