Merlai Anne, also known as the Runnaway Girl, is a supporting character in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. She is a young girl that sticks around with the Crusaders after being saved by them but due to the constant danger that the group goes through they decide to send her back to Singapore so she won't end up endangered again.

Anne is voiced by Ryan Bartley in the English dub and Rie Kugimiya in the Japanese dub.

Biography[]

When the Crusaders are on a cruise ship to get to Eygpt, a sailor finds Anne on the ship as a stowaway and plans to give her to the police. Due to her disguise, she was mistaken as a boy but jumped overboard since she did not want to be handed over to the authorities. By doing so, she was nearly caught by a shark but Jotaro intervened and used his stand to attack the shark and rescue her. While doing so, he discovers Anne's disguise and reveals that she is a girl, which offends her and she calls him a "pervert" for doing this. Anne threatens the crew for discovering her identity and says she will cut them with her switchblade. After the revelation of the captain being an imposter of the original, he takes Anne as a hostage and tries to jump into the sea as a way to lure them in and fall prey to his stand, Dark Blue Moon. She was saved by Kakyoin but the captain entered the sea anyway with Jotaro going after him.

After the fight, the ship was destroyed, leaving everyone stranded on a boat until a new ship arrived. The ship was empty with no crew to be seen but planned to use the ship anyway. While looking around, Anne encounters a caged ape and questions why it's here but she is warned by the sailors to stay away from the animal due to it being an orangutan. When she was taking a shower, Anne was disturbed by the orangutan, Strength, who attempted to rape her but was rescued by Jotaro and watches the two battle. By the time they enter Singapore, Anne refuse to leave them as she still seeks adventure and excuse it by saying she will meet her father in 5 days. The Crusaders allowed her to stay for a bit as they realized Anne is too poor to leave around by herself.

Later on, Anne was hanging around with Jotaro and Kakyoin until she notes Kakyoin strange personality as he cruelly attack a thief and eat a bettle. After Jotaro striked him down, they discover he was a fake and were being manipulated by a stand user named, Rubber Soul but he was defeated later on by Jotaro. The Crusaders tried to leave Anne behind so she can see her father but Polnareff insist that she's probably an orphan, who lied of having an father in Singapore and feels a bit lonely without her. They encounter Anne again in the middle of the street, who is asking them for a ride until ZZ's attack with his stand, Wheel of Fortune. Anne later admits that she ran away from home though the group is more concern on her safety and don't want to leave her off on her own again.

After ZZ's defeat, The group tells Anne that they want her to go back home and return to her parents with some money to afford a ride back to Hong Kong. In the anime, she agrees with Joseph's argument and decides to return home while being explain on Holly's situation. Anne gets on a plane and wishes Jotaro luck on saving his mother.

Appearance[]

Anne is a child from Singapore, who has black hair with brown eyes and skin. In the color manga, she has fair skin with blue eyes and brown hair. Anne wears a simple shirt with overalls but when she was disguised as a boy she wore a simple cap with her hair tuck into it. Anne wore the cap again when she was found by the Crusaders while hitchhiking on the road.

Personality[]

Anne is very adventerous girl always seeking to travel and going place to place as a way to seek a sense of it. At first glance, she comes off as a typical brat, who ran away from home for selfish gain but she is just an reckless innocent who seeks adventure. In one insteance, she became furious at Jotaro for discovering her identity and threaten to stab anyone who goes near her. But she mellow out aftar getting along with the Crusaders and have fun with them. She even develops a crush on Jotaro and starts to daydream about him taking a liking of his bravery. Through her adventure with the Crusaders, she shows bravery but reckless as she keeps putting herself in danger much to the concern of the group. Jotaro confirms this by saying Anne drags them down to the point of danger and risking thier necks for her.

After being told about Holly situation, Anne now understand that she is in the way of their journey and agrees to return back home. She wishes Jotaro luck on his journey on saving his mother.

Anne was created because Hirohiko Araki liked the idea of having a girl in the Joestar Group, but due to a difficulty in including her in the constant fights and life or death situations, he eventually decided to write her out of the story.
According to Araki, Anne has the potential to develop a stand in the future.
Anne was not given a name in the manga, being referred to as just the "Runaway Girl". During the production of the anime adaptation, Hisataka Kasama, a producer of David Production, asked Araki to come up with a name for her, thinking that it was strange that she did not have a name despite spending a considerable time with the Crusaders. Araki then came up with the name "Merlai Anne", as a reference to Singapore's official mascot, the Merlion.
