Lums (pronounced "Lumbs" prior to Rayman Origins, in which it is pronounced "Looms") are winged sentient balls of energy that play a vital role in maintaining the very sustainability of the Glade of Dreams and are responsible for creating the sleeping deity Polokus. They usual play the role of collectables in the Rayman series.

Biography[]

Rayman 2: The Great Escape[]

Lums first appear in Rayman 2: The Great Escape where their history is told through The Knowledge of the World feature. Before the Glade of Dreams came to be, only Lums existed until they eventually focused their energies on creating a single powerful entity that could make anything from their thoughts and dreams alone, which resulted in the birth of Polokus. When the Glade of Dreams was formed, Lums used their energies to make it sustainable for its inhabitants to live and created The Heart of the World to maintain peace and harmony in the Glade. The Heart of the World was eventually shattered into 1,000 Yellow Lums by Admiral Razorbeard and his crew of Robo-Pirates, causing havoc with the very nature of the world. Luckily, Rayman was able to reassemble the heart by rounding up every Yellow Lum that served as a fraction of it and restore the Glade to its proper state.

Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc[]

In Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc, a troublemaking Black Lum named Andre creates more of his kind by transferring negative energy to Red Lums in order steal fur from other creatures and form a gang of costumed gun-toting goons called Hoodlums to conquer the Glade of Dreams. The Hoodlums themselves are actually just Black Lums wearing outfits that give them different abilities and will flee once their outfit is destroyed. However, Rayman can pull a Grimace to revert Black Lums back into red ones again and eventually does so to Andre which reverts all the Black Lums he transformed in the Glade.

Rayman Origins[]

Lums return as a collectable in Rayman Origins and are needed to trade with The Magician for Electoons in order to progress further in the game. Later on it is revealed that The Magician was using the Lums to power an army of hostile robots and a flying fortress in the clouds. Lum Kings are also introduced in the game and collecting one will temporarily make any nearby Lums worth double the amount than usual.

Rayman Legends[]

The Lums' role in Rayman Legends is the same as the previous game except collecting will free Teensies from captivity. They are also used to unlock costumes in the Character Gallery and Creatures won through Lucky Tickets will provide Lums every day for the player as well.

Types of Lums[]

  • Yellow Lums: The most common Lums found. In Rayman 2: The Great Escape, 1,000 of them were needed to restore The Heart of the World. In later games, Yellow Lums are used to obtain costumes and can be earned in various ways.
  • Super Yellow Lums: A larger variant of Yellow Lums that have only appeared in Rayman 2: The Great Escape so far. They are rarer to find and worth five smaller Yellow Lums.
  • Red Lums: Red Lums are said to be full of viral life and can restore Rayman's health or serve as an extra life in Rayman 2 Forever for the Game Boy Color. If frightened or exposed to negative energy, they can transform into Black Lums.
  • Green Lums: Green Lums act as checkpoints in levels by keeping records of Rayman's progress and reviving him if he fails. In Rayman 2 Forever, White Lums serve the same purpose.
  • Blue Lums: Blue Lums represent the first breath of all life in the Glade of Dreams and are rich with oxygen. In Rayman 2: The Great Escape, Rayman can collect Blue Lums while underwater to regain air. However, in handheld games, Rayman can use them to temporarily retain flight.
  • Purple Lums: Purple Lums give the Glade of Dreams cohesion; keeping the world visible and solid. Rayman can grab onto and swing from Purple Lums to get across large gaps and chasms safely.
  • Silver Lums: Silver Lums can grant Rayman new abilities to use in Rayman 2: The Great Escape. They are given to Rayman by his friends throughout the game.
  • Black Lums: Black Lums, also known as Dark Lums, are Red Lums corrupted by forms of negative energy. They are chaotic and twisted creatures that like to drink alcoholic plume juice, hang out at marshes, and serve the Dark Lum Lord Andre in his attempts to conquer the Glade of Dreams.
  • Lum Kings: Collecting Lum Kings will cause any nearby Lums to temporarily change color, making them worth double the amount for a short time.
