~ Fear in regards to Anxiety. |
Fear is one of the tritagonists of Pixar's Inside Out franchise. He is the purple emotion of fear and one of the five primary emotions inside the mind of Riley Andersen. He appears to be very paranoid and unsure of himself, and often tries to protect Riley from danger, a description that matches his name.
Portrayals[]
- In the first film and Riley's First Date?, he is voiced by Bill Hader, who also voices Flint Lockwood in Sony Pictures Animation's Cloudy with a Change of Meatballs franchise, King Leonard Mudbeard in The Angry Birds Movie film series, J.P. Spamley in Ralph Breaks the Internet, and BB-8 in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and portrayed General Armstrong Custer in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.
- As of the sequel, he is voiced by Tony Hale, who also played Forky in Pixar's Toy Story franchise and Jerome Squalor in A Series of Unfortunate Events.
- In Disney Infinity, he was voiced by Jason J. Lewis, who also voiced Rex from the Toy Story franchise, albeit for certain commercials.
Background[]
Inside Out[]
Fear is one of the five emotions introduced after Joy. Fear is somehow very nervous and paranoid which is one of the reasons why his basis was based on frightening. Fear is eventually one of the five Emotions of the headquarters inside Riley's mind, explaining about the internal core's memory orbs until later, all the orbs have fallen out.
Eventually, he, Anger, and Disgust went into a problem when Joy and Sadness are gone missing, causing him to fall into panic. When they fail to help cope while the other Emotions are gone, their plans fail to maintain Riley and then Anger comes to the thought of making her run away. Despite his and Disgust's protests, Anger carries out the idea, which causes him and Disgust to immediately regret.
As the headquarters are turning black, Joy and Sadness finally return in the nick of time and Sadness is able to convince Riley to return to her parents and save the day. Fear and the other emotions continue adapting Riley to a new life in the end.
Inside Out 2[]
In the sequel, Fear and the other Emotions met the new Emotions: Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui. When the new Emotions kicked the old Emotions out of Headquarters, Fear, Joy, Sadness, Disgust, and Anger worked together to find their way back, and stop them. In the end, the Emotions, old and new, became good friends.
Personality[]
As his name suggests, Fear is afraid of almost anything and everything, especially of any situation that could immediately go wrong. He worries about Riley's safety and does his best to ensure she stays out of any type of immediate trouble, whether it be related to her physical or social well being. In a sense, he's a pacifist and the voice of reason in the group as opposed to the other emotions as he's usually seen trying to convince the others to not go through with any potentially risky decisions like not having Riley run away from home or argue with her parents.
Although he's afraid of a lot, when he's shown to be on Dream Duty, he's ironically not afraid of Riley's nightmares and actually takes the time to criticize them. He's shown to be afraid of clowns however as when he sees Jangles the Clown in one of Riley's nightmares, he almost immediately faints.
While he didn't agree with Anxiety's actions, he almost admired them and felt a kinship with her mindset, due to how the actual emotions of fear and anxiety can feed into each other.
Trivia[]
- Bill Hader was recast for the sequel because of a payment dispute.
- Fear being primarily purple-themed might be in reference to the term "shrinking violet", which refers to someone who is personally fearful, more specifically shy around others.
- In the original version of the 1st movie, Fear was supposed to get lost with Joy instead of Sadness. Although the idea was scrapped, it was used in the sequel.
