Hero Overview

I pass by researchers, of course. There's a ton of us down here. Some, I know; others, I don't. The lucky ones have been here for a while. The unlucky ones? They're fifty dollars. Yeah, yeah. I'm sick. But the guy who runs the betting is the same guy who comes up with the cover stories for their families. Hah! He pockets ten percent, then tells them how a crane fell or a beam collapsed or something. They never hear about how someone was dissolved or unexisted or some shit. Its hard, though, coming up with excuses when there's no body. You gotta respect the man.
~ Dr. Iceberg's inner monologue in "Life's Cold".
He's trapped, inside, he can feel, but not react to it. What could be a worse hell? And what could be better for them?

They know what they're doing. The personality type. The ones who are susceptible. His was an accident. I'm not letting it happen to me on purpose.
~ Iceberg's suicide note in "In His Own Image: Epilogue".

Dr. Iceberg is a protagonist in the SCP Foundation series. He is one of the more notable doctors working for the SCP Foundation. He is known for being the assistant and protege of the famous Dr. Gears. Apart from that is also known as a cold and apathetic individual, not really caring much about his fellow personnel and mostly concentrated on his work before commiting suicide due to the stress caused by his higher-ups.

He plays a overarching role in "In His Own Image" series and a minor role in the "Resurrection" canon.

Biography[]

Working for the Foundation[]

Not much is known about the origin and past of Ellis "Iceberg" Gill. He originally specialized in the American military and later on was recruited by the SCP Foundation as a researcher. He began working in some sites, most prominently in Site-19 where after some time he was promoted to assistant of the famous Dr. Gears, following his last assistant's exposure to SCP-008.

Iceberg found this job difficult and stressing, especially due to being near SCPs like SCP-076-2 and SCP-530, and was eventually informed he and Gears would be sent to SCP-882's containment site to assist the doctor in testing the anomaly's memetic effects. The next day, both Iceberg and Gears were forced to wake up early as SCP-882 had breached containment, flying to the far north despite the accident. Unfortunately for them, as soon as they arrived a blizzard started, meaning that both Iceberg and Gears were stuck for at least two weeks. They set base in an observation post lined with SCP-148 where they would be observing SCP-882 through cameras. There Iceberg witnessed D-882/1 being affected by the machine which caused him to walk right into it, leaving Iceberg somewhat disturbed. During this time, Iceberg worked on several ideas for projects like a list of tests for SCP-914 and feeding SCP-236 to SCP-682.

To Iceberg's dismay, because of the circumstances they were stuck in the personnel were forced to consume the emergency rations. Despite receiving a supply drop, the food was running low and soon they began suffering some losses as the personnel perished either from suicide or succumbing to stress. While this was going on, Iceberg and Gears continued with their work in observing SCP-882 as it kept grinding endlessly, forcing staff to feed it any metal they could find. Gears asked Iceberg to watch 882's range of effect as one personnel was experiencing some headache, fearing the anomaly's memetic effects brainwashing their fellow workers. This suspicion turned out to be true, as everyone except for the two of them started serving 882 and sought to get to Iceberg and Gears, forcing the duo to barricade their post, but unfortunately for them the heating system was taken out. Iceberg fought against the brainwashed personnel by throwing a Molotov cocktail and directly punching them, holding on until rescue came.

Thankfully, despite the delay caused by the blizzard a rescue team finally arrived and extracted both Iceberg and Gears. Following this, event Iceberg had psychological sessions with Dr. Simon Glass, though it didn't help him much. He also met another famous doctor, Benjamin Kondraki, who gave Iceberg his weekend paperwork, leaving a bad impression on him.

While he and Gears were testing some explosives for the MTFs to use, a slowbomb detonated accidentally, injuring the two. Iceberg and Gears were sent to Site-19's infirmary to recover and as they sat alone Iceberg decided to talk to his superior. Iceberg asked Gears about his codename of Cog and whether he was a robot or not since he never expressed any type of emotion. Gears responded that Cog was an acronym for his full name and he wasn't a robot but a normal human who due to his experience working for the Foundation just couldn't act as according to his feelings. This still left Iceberg confused at which point Gears informed him of an epitaph in Tasmania, Australia. Iceberg, determined to learn more about Gears, investigated this epitaph, burying himself in work and becoming emotionally detached from anyone.

As he settled in his new lifestyle working for the Foundation, Iceberg became increasingly more emotionless and uncaring of his fellow personnel, even betting on which new personnel would die first, such as Dr. MacCarrick who was assigned to SCP-035. Occasionally, Iceberg would hit on a female staff member like Break but she always rebuked his advances.

At some point, Iceberg was involved in experimenting with SCP-261. One test he oversaw was inserting 500 yen into the machine while powered, producing an extremely salty fried fish patty filled with mustard and packed like a hot pocket bearing the image of the Muppets' Swedish Chef. Iceberg decided to redo the test, this time unpowered, resulting in the "Most Horrendously Painful Hangover Ever Candy Shots", sweet Japanese candies that beared resemblance to the Offspring band members.

Following the containment breach caused by Kondraki riding SCP-682 to chase down SCP-083-D, Iceberg was questioned by an interviewer about it. Iceberg expressed his disdain towards Kondraki, calling him a reckless and dangerous lunatic and believed himself to be the most adequate person to replace him as the Head of Research at Site 17. As he went on his ramblings the interviewer shut him down, telling Iceberg their interview was over. Learning that the questioning was an interview Iceberg became concerned over Kondraki seeing what he said about him.

Wanting to finally get his promotion, he came to conclusion that he needed to decommission a troubling SCP as he noticed that no matter what Clef and Kondraki did, they always retained their jobs after taking out dangerous and costly anomalies. Learning that SCP-135-D, a semi-sentient shapeshifting object that could release various forms of radiation, was slated to be decommissioned Iceberg attempted to sent a request to the O5 Council to be the one to do it. His first attempt was to slip same papers with his credentials into some reports, but this failed as Gears noticed this and chided Iceberg for getting his papers mixed. His next attempt involved the same strategy, slipping letters to humiliate Clef in order to dissuade the Council from choosing him to do the job. However, Clef got hold of those papers and enraged used his shotgun to shoot at Iceberg's office door, though the latter failed to realize that it was him. With this attempt also foiled, Iceberg decided to ask his higher-ups directly, only for him to be rejected due to Clef already being chosen and Iceberg's previous incident involving him accidentally blowing up several Class-D personnel. Iceberg remained undeterred, planning to take matters into his own hands. Wearing an antifreeze suit, Iceberg got hold of SCP-135-D and brought it alongside D-██-2348 into a freezer room where the object took the form of the D-Class. Iceberg proceeded to let a ball of ice fall into 135's "head", partially crushing it before activating the room, freezing both the anomaly and the D-Class. He then took out his "sawn-off" shotgun and shattered both of them, and with his job complete he turned to leave only to discover the door was frozen, trapping him inside for now.

On Prof. Kain Pathos Crow's day off, him and Iceberg went target practicing in a massive MTF shooting range, Iceberg destroying some statues resembling SCPs by commanding some fighter robot while Kain was on SCP-244-ARC doing the same thing, with the professor's other creation Sophia taking points. As they shot down each statue in devastating explosions they suddenly heard some alarm going off but didn't think much of it. Noticing a reptilian statue nearby Iceberg had his robot throw a massive missile at it, witnessing the statue turn its head as it noticed the projectile moments before being obliterated. As it turned the now-destroyed statue was SCP-226-D which had just breached containment, and despite this the two personnel continued with their little game.

Possible Endings[]

In His Own Image[]

As he kept working for the Foundation Iceberg became more and more detached from his emotions, becoming more like Gears. He eventually realized what was going with him when he failed to react to the attractive Agent Shelly. He came to the belief that the higher-ups were trying replicate Gears' condition with him, turning into a complete loyal robot. Iceberg didn't wish to be trapped in his body like his superior, and in his attempt to evade such a fate committed suicide on August 1st of 1997, but not before leaving a suicide note for Gears. Gears found his dead body and although he didn't show any emotion as per usual deep down he grieved over the loss of one of his closest friends. Iceberg would be replaced by Agent Troy Lament as Gears' new assistant while his belongings were shipped to the Archival Storage.

His body, however, was taken by the Foundation for their upcoming Project Resurrection, replacing his body parts with machinery in order to bring him back to life, turning him into the robot he sought to avoid. During the formation of MTF Alpha-9, Factotum Loyalty activated the now cyborg Iceberg, intending to use him for their machinations.

But We Do Not Talk About That[]

An instance of SCP-500 mysteriously fell in Iceberg's grasp, and desiring to be cured of his cold affliction he immediately swallowed it up. However, instead of purging the cold it instead enhanced it, destroying his body and turning him into ice which proceeded to shatter after falling to the ground.

Appearance[]

Iceberg appeared as a tall man with white lengthy hair, glasses, scientist outfit and sometimes carrying a briefcase with himself. After being resurrected as a cyborg, he appeared like a corpse with cold eyes yet similar to his old self, bound in blue metal and being devoid of blood and breath.

Personality[]

Iceberg was noted to be egotistical and narcissistic, thinking highly of himself and having no real regards for his fellow personnel. Iceberg bet on which of the new personnel would die first to anomalies, knowing full well the depravity of this but not really caring about it, and occasionally hit on several attractive female workers but was always rejected, causing him to think he was just as bad with women like Clef was. Originally Iceberg was eager to work for the Foundation and under the wing of Dr. Gears but following his encounter with several dangerous anomalies which easily took numerous lives he became apathetic and cold, showing indifference to the lives of others rather than his own. He continually tried to be promoted and get out of his position as Gears' assistant, going out of his way to convince his higher-ups he deserved to get his promotion, disobeying direct orders to deal with troublesome anomalies and disgracing his fellow personnel without a second thought. He still had some odd friendships with some of the personnel, as near Christmas of 2008, Iceberg broke inside Crow's office to finish half of his paperwork to elevate his work as a form of gift though Iceberg also stole 550 dollars. However, as he kept working for Gears Iceberg noticed he was becoming emotionless exactly like him, and despite having admired his superior Iceberg wished to avoid transforming into a mindless puppet for the Foundation. Wanting to remain his own individual Iceberg decided to kill himself, seeing no other way out, but sadly he was revived as a cyborg incapable of feeling any emotion and totally subservient to the Foundation.

Powers and Abilities[]

Iceberg was originally a normal human being without any special capabilities apart of being greatly intelligent and being well knowledgeable in warfare, knowing over 40 kinds of improvised explosives which included Molotov cocktails and slowbombs. After some accident Iceberg's body temperature was lowered more than usual, despite being in perfect health. However, he was quite reckless as he often acted without giving a proper thought and in some situations he usually caused great damage to his surroundings, injuring almost everyone present including himself. Following his suicide, Iceberg was brought back as a cyborg though his true extents are yet to be seen.

Trivia[]

  • Like most of the notable Foundation employees, Iceberg is the author avatar of user Iceberg 7.
  • Iceberg enjoys chocolate bars.
  • Some fans headcanon the name Julian Finn as Iceberg's true identity, though that's never been officialized anywhere in the wiki, except for the "Classical Revival" series which takes place in an alternate continuity.
  • A large number of off-site fans shipped Iceberg and Gears. This was even depicted in the tale "sex at frigid temperature".
  • Iceberg was depicted in Dr. Edison's "SCP Foundation: The Movie", and like the rest of the personnel who were also depicted in it he hated his portrayal to the point of putting a bounty on Edison.
  • Iceberg once wrote to Lord Blackwood, asking him whether he liked either hot or cold climates and what is the most dangerous continent.
  • Although Iceberg died in August 1st of 1997, in the continuity of the tale "13th-23rd December 2008" he was still alive.
  • Coincidentally, Iceberg's replacement Lament was also turned into an emotionless cyborg completely loyal to the Foundation in SCP-001 (djkaktus's Proposal III).
