Adam Maitland is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Barbara) of Tim Burton's 1988 gothic horror-comedy film Beetlejuice. He and his wife, Barbara, have tripped into the underworld, and have to outsmart the ghost with the most, and cope with the Deetzes. He owns and operates the Maitland Hardware Store in Winter River, CT.

He was portrayed by Alec Baldwin who also voices as Butch, Nicholas St. North, Mr. Conductor and Boss Baby.

History[]

He got married to Barbara, they were settling down into their home and married life.

Beetlejuice[]

Adam is first picking up a spider that crawling on a model of his house and then sets it free. Adam and Barbara were thinking about going to the country until they're car crashes and falls off the bridge.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice[]

Adam and Barbara at some point discovered a loophole that allowed them to move on to the Great Beyond. It was unknown how the separation between the ghost couple and Lydia went, but since Lydia seemed to have accepted it, it was likely done on good terms.

Lydia's daughter, Astrid Deetz went to attic and discovers Adam's model set, she asks Lydia if it was belong to her father, Lydia reply no and it is belong to Adam, one of the ghost couples.

Personality[]

Adam is a nice guy who wants to get along with everyone and be in peace. Being a quiet man, his hobby was creating realistic sculptures (especially for his model of his hometown) before he and his wife Barbara died in a car accident after a short trip into town to get supplies for the day's projects. When he finds himself a ghost and his house sold, he finds the new owners don’t share his aesthetic. He’s disgusted by the elaborate, abstract artwork of Delia Deetz, which ruins the simple, tranquil feeling of their now haunted Victorian home.

Although his cousin-in-law Jane took credit, he and his wife worked very hard on redecorating their house, and he decides that as ghosts, his and Barbara's opportunity to scare the Deetz family out of the house is their best chance to restore the house to its original beauty where he and Barbara may spend their afterlife together in peace.

Trivia[]

  • Adam would've summoned Beetlejuice as soon as he got the flyer, but since the bio-exorcist used the ancient astrology spelling of his name, Adam (luckily) mispronounced it as "BEET-all-geyse".
  • Adam was the first to point out that The Handbook For The Recently Deceased is written like stereo instructions.
  • Adam misread the title of the book upon first glance, calling it the Handbook For The Recently Diseased.
  • Despite being the focus and one of the protagonists of the first film, Adam and Barbara do not appear or are mentioned in Beetlejuice: The Animated Series. In addition, they didn’t appear in the sequel possibly because they passed onto the afterlife.
