“ Everyone has scars. That's what I was told. My mom said mine were from horseplay as a child. I don't know what to believe anymore. „
~ Jonah, recounting the abuse from his father
“ Nod once if HE's not coming back for a while. „
~ Gabby to Jonah when HE leaves the room.

HE is the main antagonist of The East Patch analog horror series Angel Hare.

He is the unseen abusive father figure of Jonah Whitman. When Angel Gabby had become aware of Jonah's abusive domestic life at the hands of his father, she had decided to aid Jonah by telling him of ways that he can endure the abuse.

From then on, Angel Hare, the titular program, served as a major source of escapism for Jonah from his abusive family life throughout his childhood. Eventually HE proved himself to be so dangerous that Gabby had decided to condemn him to some unspecified fate, and helped Jonah create an alabi for HIS disappearance.

When Jonah rediscovers Angel Hare in his adulthood, and learns about his abusive father and all that he's done, this drives him to dig deeper into the show.

What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]

  • HE is portrayed as being a very wrathful and violent individual that regularly beat his son throughout his childhood, shown in the series' second episode, where an unseen figure meant to represent HIM is violently banging on the door to Gabby's bedroom. The beatings had gotten so bad that they have left permanent scars on Jonah's body.
    • It is also heavily implied that HE had left Jonah emotionally broken as well, as some episodes have Gabby telling Jonah that she can stay with him for as long as he needs her to for emotional support. The emotional scars were also apparently so bad that Gabby had to wipe Jonah's memory clean of his abusive father after condemning HIM to an unspecified fate.
      • Even then, after Jonah rewatches the series, all of his painful memories return to him. He is even sickened when Angel Zaggy, who he claims reminds him of HIM, appears in the show to look for Gabby after her mysterious disappearance.
  • In the third episode, it is implied that HE had intent on killing someone, as he carelessly leaves an unspecified weapon, heavily implied to be a firearm, in the exact same room as Jonah, allowing him to hide it behind a bookshelf by Gabby's instructions. Jonah also notes that he had talked to Gabby for several hours at the time, and how he was essentially left alone with the weapon during that time. This indicates that his father is a neglectful parent who is willing to kill anyone who pushes him over the edge.
  • HE is never shown in-person, never speaks a word, and he is never referred to by a proper name, instead being referred to by "HE" or "HIM" in capital letters. This was likely done in order to remove all human traits from him, and fully represent him as the monster he truly is. To further drive this point home, he is compared to Goliath from the Biblical story David and Goliath, who is often portrayed as a monstrous giant, by Gabby.
  • All instances where HE is brought up, or where his presence is indicated, are also portrayed very seriously, and are often times ominous or portrayed as something to be fearful of, greatly contrasting from the rest of the series, which is usually heartfelt and sometimes comedic.
  • HE appears to be the only character in the entire series that Angel Gabby, a generally kind-hearted and nurturing character, shows any sort of disgust or contempt for, as she always appears uptight when she brings HIM up or the danger that HE may cause.
  • While the details regarding it are left ambiguous, HIS unspecified condemnation is ultimately played for satisfaction. In the last episode of the first season, when Jonah livestreams Gabby's show, she is very happy to see Jonah again, and that he is at peace mentally despite his childhood.
  • Supplementary material, particularly a few shorts created by the Mangan sisters, imply that without Angel Gabby's assistance, Jonah would have likely ended up just like HIM, if not worse. One of these being a short where Satan from the Mandela Catalogue switches places with Gabby. There Satan states he did what he did out of necessity, while Gabby outright encourages Jonah to proceed with his violent urges. This indicates that Jonah would have been better off without his father.
