"Oregon Parks Dept manages public land in Oregon forests and grasslands encompassing 15 million acres. Tweets by Managing Ranger Gus Burnside." |
The Oregon Parks Department is the authority governing the many parks of the US state of Oregon, including that of Gravity Falls, Oregon. It has an online presence on Twitter (now known as X) and on TikTok under the handles @OregonParksDept (Twitter) and @oregonparksdeptofficial (TikTok) managed by the ranger Gus Burnside.[1][2] Out-of-universe, they are promotional social media accounts presumed to be run by the creator of Gravity Falls, Alex Hirsch,[citation needed] or another member of the series' crew, and they have been used exclusively to promote incoming releases of books related to the series via cryptic tweets or videos.
@OregonParksDept was created on Twitter in March 2016. In June 2016, it shared tweets hinting at the release of Gravity Falls: Journal 3; in February 2018, it did the same for the graphic novel Gravity Falls: Lost Legends.[3] In December 2023, it hinted at the release of The Book of Bill.[4] In July 2024, it began hosting a countdown in the lead up to its release. Later that same month, TikTok's @oregonparksdeptofficial became active.
Meta[]
The first tweets on the account were on June 19, 2016, depicting ordinary praises of the nature and warnings to incoming campers. Its first tweet was a picture of a moose, with the caption: "Ain't she a beaut! Pride of the Pacific Northwest #OregonParksDept."[5] A new tweet showed an image of a trash bin, warning campers not to litter.[6] Another warning followed, but this time for fire safety, attaching a picture of Smokey the Bear.[7]
Journal 3[]

Journal 3 covered in dust, attached to the caption: "Found a lost book in the forest today, does anyone know who this belongs to? Name was torn out. #OregonParksDept".
On June 20, 2016, Gus Burnside tweeted an image of a lone Journal 3 on the grass, asking who it may belong to.[8]
The account saw a spike in followers and tweeted on June 21st: "Wow! So many followers since my last tweet! We're glad to see the Internet is taking such an interest in Oregon's beautiful #NationalParks!"[9] and also, "So many questions about the book I found! Suppose I should look inside. Give me a moment to find my reading glasses."[10]
Later the account tweeted the following two images and statements, "This book is very hard to read. Much of it is written code or is just pure nonsense! Maybe written by a Portlander?"[11] and, "There seems to be very little educational value here. And far too many triangles. The author may have been disturbed."[12]
The account then tweeted, "Reading that book's giving me a headache. Going to clear my head by counting tree rings. Will investigate more soon!" with the following photo.[13]

A photo of "Gus Burnside".[note 1]
The account would then tweet the following normal tweets...
"Another beautiful morning in Oregon! Crater Lake has lovely trails for the whole family to enjoy #OregonParksDept"[14]
"Whether kayaking, canoeing, or renting a boat, life vests save lives! #OregonParksDept"[15]
Then it tweeted 2 more images from Journal 3 and the caption, "Still searching for the owner of this book! Do these images mean anything to anyone?"[16]
Then it was followed by, "The more I look at this book the more my head hurts. Puzzling. Going to have some other rangers look through it for me."[17]
It then tweeted an image of a bird alongside the caption, "Birdwatching? Keep one eye out for the western meadowlark, the little yellow bird with a "bow tie" of black plumage!" and a follow up tweet, "My name is Gus."[18][19]
The last tweet by the account came on June 23rd, with an image of Journal 3 being packed up and the caption, "Everyone who reads this book has been getting headaches or nightmares. Putting it away until we find the owner." [20]
Lost Legends[]
At 12:30 PM on February 15th, 2018, the 2 year anniversary of the finale, Oregon Parks Dept. came back to life and tweeted the 2nd piece in what would become Puzzling Pines, a multi step image puzzle that revealed the cover of Lost Legends; Gravity Falls' graphic novel.
"Birds use the strangest things to build their homes. This pine-tree-shaped item fell from a blue jay’s nest. Curious. Nature is a beautiful thing. #OregonParksDept #PuzzlingPines" [21]
The account also made a now deleted tweet on August 15th, 2018, of an image of Tug-n’-Talk Shmebulock with the caption...
"Every summer season, campers leave behind valuable possessions. If we find them intact, we keep them safe in our Lost-n’-Found. #LostLegends"[22]
The Book of Bill[]
Out of the blue on December 14th, 2023, the account mysteriously came back to life and made a series of unusual tweets.
It started with, "Brrr! Winter is upon us campers, so remember to obey all road signage, especially around tight curves. I sense a big change in the weather coming! #RoadSafetySavesLives"[23]
The image was black and white with just the yellow outline of a road sign in color.
It then replied to a tweet by the University of Oregon with, "Those were the days! Go Marmots! #OregonPride."[24] It then tweeted the following image of a moth, with the caption, "Now here’s a rare sight- a Brimstone Moth in December! Remember campers, look but don’t touch!"[25]
Shortly after, Chloe, who was one of the fans who found the Bill Cipher statue during Cipher Hunt, tweeted at it, "This guy looks familiar! I feel like I saw him once while I was on a hike in the woods near Reedsport."[26] To which the account replied with, "Never made it to Reedsport but I hear the ticks bite fierce out there. Remember to wear repellant and tuck your pants into your socks!"[27] It then tweeted an image of a nacho that stated, "Darn my luck, missed the Ranger Station Taco Thursday lunch again. In the woods always remember to #PackASnack"[28]
The next tweet was of an image of tree rings with Bill Cipher's hat visible in them and the caption, "To count tree rings, start in the middle of the stump, and count outwards to learn its age! And get your eyes checked if you see anything…abnormal #OregonParks"[29]
Then, most surprisingly, it tweeted out an image of a Bill Cipher popsicle that read, "It was so cold this morning someone dropped their popsicle and it stayed frozen! Is that a “Sponge Bob?”[30] followed by a video of it melting that read, "That didn’t last long! This is why we respect the campground by storing litter in the proper receptacles"[31]
The last tweet made for the day read, "Finally turning in for the night, will be up bright and early tomorrow. According to the weather, it’s gonna be some sunny day! #AlwaysCheckTheWeather"[32]
Then, in the morning on December 15th, the account came back to life and tweeted an image of Crater Lake National Park with the following, "Boy I love lakes! It’s so calming…outstanding magnificence in nature. -Gus"
When taking the first letter in each word of the tweet, it was revealed to be saying, "BILL IS COMING."[33]
Not too long after, Alex Hirsch would reveal what the account was alluding to, by announcing The Book of Bill, an upcoming book written by Bill Cipher.[34]
Despite the reveal, the account continued tweeting.
In what appeared to be a pun on the common, "This is not a drill," sentence, the account then tweeted, "THIS IS NOT A DRILL. It’s a dremel. Learn the difference at Ranger Henson’s woodworking workshop every other Wednesday at 11 at our Administration Building"[35]
The next tweet from it read, "Some of my younger followers are calling this account “sus.” And they’re right, we are SUS: “Serious (about) UV Safety!” Remember to use sunscreen, even on cloudy days!" [36]
The most recent tweet from OregonParksDept was of a quote retweet of an image posted by the University of Oregon where the supposed owner of the account, Gus, attempts to imitate the hand gesture of the individuals in the image, but forms a triangle instead. The caption reads, "Go Oregon U! Am I still doing it right #OUPRIDE"[37]
The Book of Bill Countdown[]
On July 12, 2024, Oregon Parks came back online and made the following tweet...
"Careful campers! When that arrow points to that yellow triangle, it means things are about to heat up! This weekend could be a scorcher!"
It contained an image of a sign showing wildfire danger levels for the day, with an arrow pointed to "High," which was yellow.[38]
On July 14th, the account tweeted a blurry image of bones that spelled out "9 DAYS." The caption read...
Was hunting for owl pellets to show the Boy Scouts when I came across the remains of a coyotes lunch! Almost looks like a message- better get my glasses checked! #ForestFinds #SummerFun[39]
This marked the start of a countdown to the lead up to the release of The Book of Bill. The images also contained the signature of Eduardo Valdés-Hevia; and artist known to make creepy images.[40]
The next day on July 15th, the account posted an image of a roadside sign that was edited to say "HE IS COMING. 8 DAYS." The original public domain image, from a FEMA sign in 2012, showed that a triangle hazard symbol was added to the sign.[41] The tweet read...
Looks like some wiseacre has been vandalizing our signage! Will be reporting this to the Oregon Bureau of Road Sign Maintenance. Road safety is no joke! @fox12oregon #BuckleUp[42]
The image also contains a code that appears to have been made in Runes which translates to "DONTSHAKEHISHAND" when deciphered.
On July 16th, Oregon Parks posted an image of a Bill Cipher cup in a pile of litter next to a banana peel and cigarette buds. A posted that says "Limited Offer! Only 7 days!" and a small paper that says "Runes for Beginners," likely a nod to the yet to be cracked code in the last image. A beer can also contains Eduardo's signature, indicating he made the image. The tweet reads...
Litter is the bane of a Park Rangers’s life. Deer, bears, and marmots will try to eat your trash. You don’t want a deer’s teeth to fall out, do you? #CleanYourCamp[43]
On July 17th, Oregon Parks posted a night time photo of a neon sign that originally would say "good-will - TOM'S MEATS - MEGA-GAIN" and an arrow point at a poorly lit Motel 6 sign with one below it saying "TODAYS." However, due to a power outage, the sign now reads "will MEAT A GAIN." The Motel 6 sign also in turn now reads to say "6 DAYS." The tweet then reads,
POWER OUTAGE ALERT! More than 618 Pacific Northwesterners lost electricity last night due to overheated power grids. Keep a backup flashlight handy at all times- you don’t want to bump into a stranger at night! #SummerSafety[44]
Also made by Eduardo Valdés-Hevia, the image contains a code on one of the sign poles. Originally not visible in the image posted, Eduardo tweeted out an uncompressed version to help with the decoding.[45]
On July 18th, Oregon Parks posted a photo of a huge murmuration of rare yellow-throated sterling. The birds are forming the message "5 DAYS". The tweet reads... Watch out! ⚠️ A rare yellow-throated sterling murmuration spotted outside our visitor center. Beware-they can be aggressive. This one tried to peck my eye! #EasyThereFella[46]
On July 19th, Oregon Parks posted a photo of an arm covered in mosquito (or most likely soothsquito) bites in the middle of a dark and ominous forest. The statue of Bill Cipher can be seen in the distance. The tweet reads... Boy, it's been an unlucky week for yours truly! Be sure to use mosquito repellant multiple times a day, especially near stagnant water where they breed. You don't want to end up like me! #MosquitoSeason #Itchy[47]
Discovering The Book of Bill[]
On July 20th, Oregon Parks posted, "Been a long week. Gonna take a walk in the woods to clear my head". No photo was attached to this post.[48] Just over an hour later, another post was sent, which said, "Just ran into something awful strange out here. Not sure what to make of it. Figuring out how to upload a video, better get my reading glasses #StandBy".[49]
Moments after, a TikTok account named @oregonparksdeptofficial posted a video of The Book of Bill lying in a forested area. In the middle of the video, a hand is seen briefly opening the book to get a quick peek, revealing a cipher on the very edge of the page. A voice can be heard reading the on-screen text: "Litter is the worst thing to see in our national parks. But I found something strange today. Does anyone know someone named Bill? Comment if this book is yours". The video on TikTok was captioned with the tags, "#OregonParks #ParkSafety #BookOfBill". The video was also shared on Twitter with the caption, "Found in Benson State Recreation Area, OR. Anyone know who this belongs to? #OregonParks #LostAndFound".[50][51]
Yet another video was posted on Twitter of the book being picked up and deer teeth falling out of it. The book is then dropped and the hand picks up the teeth, giving the viewers a closer look. Attached is the caption: "What in the world. Are those…? This is a head scratcher. Taking this back to the station with me. Working the night shift, should plenty of time to sort this out #LongNightWithANewBook".[52] The video was also posted on TikTok with a voice reading the on-screen text, "WHAT IS GOING ON? Teeth? TEETH? TEETH!".[53]
On July 21st, after a longer than normal wait, Oregon Parks posted, "There’s something wrong with this book," followed by, "It hasn’t been acting the way books are supposed to act."[54][55]
After that, Gus tweets two photos of the mysterious book and says, "My camera keeps turning off when I try to capture it but I swear the pages are changing." The images show a glitching out Book of Bill that has cracked screen pages and a Blue Screen of Death.[56] These images were also posted on TikTok, with the description, "My book isnt acting the way books should. Has this ever happened to anyone else?", and a caption added to the first image: "IS ANYONE ELSES BOOK DOING THIS?" The slideshow of images is set to the instrumental track "Synthwave Goose" from the film Blade Runner 2049.[57]
Gus then tweets another image of a page and says, "Who’s trying to mess with me? Is this a practical joke or what?" The page reads the following...[58]
"WELL WELL WELL HERE WE ARE AT LAST! I WAS WONDERING WHEN I'D FINALLY GET A CHANCE TO MEET THE FAMOUS RANGER GUS BURNSIDE. BIG FAN OF ALL THE LONG DRONING SPEECHES YOU GIVE TO BOY SCOUTS ABOUT TICK SAFETY BY THE WAY. AND YOUR ELK FACTS? BROTHER, DON'T GET YOU STARTED! LOOK KHAKIS, YOU'VE NEVER BEEN THE LIFE OF THE PARTY. ONE MIGHT SAY THATS WHY YOU LEFT YOUR HOME TOWN AND EVERYONE YOU KNEW BEHIND TO START A NEW LIFE IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE CATALOGUING BARK. BUT WE BOTH KNOW YOU'RE CUT OUT FOR SOMETHING MORE. YOU'VE GOT A HELL OF A MORAL COMPASS BUDDY. GETS A BIT TEDIOUS, DOESNT IT? HOW'D YOU LIKE TO TAKE THAT COMPASS FOR A SPIN? THE TOURISTS WHO LITTER YOUR PARKS? THOSE TEENS WHO MAKE OUT BEHIND THE PUMA TAXIDERMY IN THE GIFT SHOP? THAT ONE COWORKER WHO NEVER. STOPS. DOING. BIRDCALLS. WOULDN'T IT BE NICE TO MAKE MAKE ALL THOSE VOICES
GO AWAY.
PEACE. QUIET.
THATS WHY YOU CAME TO THE WOODS.
ISNT IT, GUS?" |
On July 22nd, Oregon Parks tweets, "Terrible night. Headache, nightmares, sweating through the sheets. How did that book have my name in it? I locked it in our storage locker in the basement"[59], "But I can’t stop thinking about it"[60] and "Should I check again?"[61]. Less than an hour later, Oregon Parks shared a video of the Book of Bill seeming to infect a book next to it on the table. The tweet reads, "IN INFECTS OTHER BOOKS IT INFECTS OTHER BOOKS"[62] About a half-hour after that, another tweet was posted, reading: "Enough is enough. I became a ranger to study the natural, not the unnatural. This ends now". Attached is a video of the Book being buried.[63]
Afterwards, Oregon Parks tweeted, "Finally back at the ranger station! Feeling a bit more like myself after putting that business behind me. Yours truly could really use a drink. It’s “6:00 somewhere” right? Ha ha! #RangerHumor".[64] That wasn't the end of it, however, for Oregon Parks would share a video of a hand is shown pulling away bottles and cups off of a shelf and revealing the Book sitting on it. The tweet simply reads, "What the hell?? No!! How????"[65] This was followed by another tweet simply repeating the word "no" seven times.[66] This was followed by another tweet that says, "Everyone thinks I’m crazy. I need to destroy this thing. How?"[67]
An hour later, the account sent a tweet that simply read “Fire.”[68] Just before the clock struck 8 pm PDT (or 11 pm EDT), Oregon Parks posted a photo of the Book being held in front of the sign of Smokey Bear first seen in 2016. The tweet says, "4,, whiskeys in. Sorry Smokey. I need to end this".[69] Later, Oregon Parks posted a video of the Book being burned. The tweet says, "Finally. It’s over".[70] Then Gus tweets saying, "What a relief. All that’s left is to clean up the camp. #KeepItClean #FireSafety #SummerFun."[71] He then posts a photo of the fire scraps, and says, "Just a few scraps left to tidy up here, then tucking in for the night!."[72]The image contains various pages from the book that spell out, "YOU shouldn't have DONE ThAT." A while later, supposedly after Gus goes to sleep, a wordless tweet appears with just a dark photo.[73]
Disappearance of Gus Burnside[]
After two days with no response, a new post was made, revealing that Gus has gone missing with a partially ripped missing person poster showing Gus with a goat.[74] It read...
🚨🚨🚨 MISSING 🚨🚨🚨
Gus Burnside
Age 52, last seen 11:30 PM, 7/22/24 near ranger station.
If you have any info pertaining to this case please message us here at
@OregonParksDept
We are all #PrayingForGus
On July 25th, Alex Hirsch tweeted an image of a billboard with a phone number to the Bill Cipher's Personal Injury Hotline.[75] If one calls the number, presses option 1 ("Are you in pain?") and then option 4 ("Are you currently on fire?"), they hear Bill laugh manically, followed by him saying, "Sorry, Gus." This implies that Bill Cipher likely is involved in Gus' disappearance and we will learn more regarding it soon.
On July 31st, one week after their last tweet, Oregon Parks quote retweeted a tweet by Joshua Tree National Park that commemorated World Ranger Day with a tweet celebrating Gus and hoping for him to be found safely.[76] It read...
If you knew him, either from his tick safety workshops or his “famous” pine cone collection, please say a prayer for our lost ranger Gus M Burnside. Your words of encouragement would mean a lot to his family while local law enforcement continues the search. #ComeBackGus
BURNED INSIDE
On August 9th, The Book of Bill tie in website, This Is Not A Website Dot Com updated to show a computer where you could type words into. Typing in Gus' last name, Burnside, gives you a message that says "Burned Inside." Typing that then into the site gives you an ominous video of an Oregon Parks Ranger's badge and tag half-buried in dirt. It can be assumed this is further clues as to what has happened to Gus.
In-universe appearance[]
In Journal 3, the Parks Department discovered a copy of the Journal. While they dismissed the contents of the Journal as a prank, they claimed that troopers have had headaches and disturbing nightmares. The Department put the Journal up for sale at their annual Bake-Off, urging people to take "this cursed thing" off their hands.
