Tears of a Clown is the fifteenth episode of the first season of Empty Nest and the fifteenth episode overall. Directed by Hal Cooper and written by Marie Therese Squerciati, it premiered on NBC-TV on February 6th, 1989.
Carol becomes the Public Relations Director of the hospital and causes a multimillion-dollar lawsuit when she reveals the mental problems of local celebrity Poko the Clown at a press conference. Charley convinces Barbara to pose as his fiancée so he can get a promotion.
The episode's title is a reference to the 1967 soul song "The Tears of a Clown", written by Hank Cosby, Smokey Robinson, and Stevie Wonder and originally recorded by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles for the Tamla Records label subsidiary of Motown,
