Wind (, Kaze?), also called Tornado and Air, is a recurring element in the Final Fantasy series. It is usually associated with avian and aerial enemies and beings. This element's relation with avian enemies is rather strange; birds can be either weak to this element, or nullify it.

Recurring themes[]

Equipment[]

Some daggers have the wind element, and in Final Fantasy IX, all magical rackets are Wind-elemental. The Wind Spear is a recurring weapon of the element.

Spells[]

The basic Wind-elemental spell is Aero, with upgrades being Aerora, Aeroga, and Aeroja. The spell Tornado is common and often reduces targets' HP to critical levels. A notable healing spell is the Blue Magic White Wind, which usually restores HP equal to the caster's.

Summons[]

Wind has no recurring summon and was not represented until Final Fantasy V with the Syldra summon. Final Fantasy VII, while it did not feature a summon with a true Wind element, had the Choco/Mog Materia classified as having the Wind element despite its attacks being non-elemental, as well as the Typhoon Materia later in the game with a similar classing despite being a Fire/Ice/Lightning/Earth attack.

Final Fantasy VIII introduced Pandemona. In Final Fantasy IX, Fenrir can cast the Wind-elemental Millennial Decay if Eiko is equipped with the Maiden Prayer. Garuda appears in Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV as the representative Wind summon, and in the world of Ivalice, Chaos, Walker of the Wheel takes on the same role. In the 3D remake of Final Fantasy IV, Sylph doubles as the Wind elemental summon along with its Drain-like effect.

Four Fiends[]

In the games which stories' involves crystals, the elemental guardians of them, commonly identified as "the Four Fiends", are often present. In Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy IX it is represented by Tiamat, in Final Fantasy IV by Barbariccia, in Final Fantasy Mystic Quest by Pazuzu, and in Final Fantasy Dimensions by Vata.

Final Fantasy VII[]

Wind is one of the rarer elements, as few methods of using it exist for the player. Wind proves effective against many flying enemies. Adding a Wind element to a Long Range attack can be useful against certain enemies.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis[]

Wind is one of the six elements present. Wind is opposed to earth but not many earth-based enemies are weak to it with The exception of Earth elementals and Titan. Most flying enemies are weak to wind instead. Currently there is no summon associated with wind.

Final Fantasy VIII[]

Wind is an element with two Magic spells: Aero and Tornado. The Guardian Force Pandemona does Wind damage. The player can protect against Wind damage with Elem-Def-J.

FFXI Wind Element

The Wind element is strong against Earth and weak to Ice. It is aligned with the attribute of Agility. The status ailment corresponding to Wind is Choke, and it drains HP and Vitality of the target.

Final Fantasy XII[]

The Wind element opposes the Earth element. Wind damage is amplified by 20% in any windy conditions (the characters' hair and clothes are fluttering). The Wind-elemental Esper is Chaos. The Cherry and Cloud Staves as well as Staff of the Magi amplify the wielder's wind damage, making them excellent for casting Aero. The Wind-elemental weapons are Ame-no-Murakumo, Gladius, Zephyr Pole, Zwill Crossblade, Caliper (Zodiac only), and Windslicer Shot. The Windbreaker armor resists Wind damage, as and Wind resistance was added to some equipment pieces in Zodiac versions: Agate Ring and Cat-ear Hood.
