Enemy Intel

Whisper Rubrum is a boss in Final Fantasy VII Remake, fought at the end of Chapter 18, "Destiny's Crossroads". It is summoned to battle by the Whisper Harbinger. It absorbs Fire Fire and appears alongside its counterparts of other elemental alignments: Whisper Croceo and Whisper Viridi. Together the trio morph into Whisper Bahamut. According to the Final Fantasy VII Remake Ultimania, Whisper Rubrum takes his fighting style from Kadaj, a Remnant of Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

Battle[]

Whisper Trio from FFVII Remake

The three Whispers.

Upon entering the Singularity, the player takes control of Cloud and runs along the floating debris of Midgar to reunite with Barret and Tifa. The Harbinger towers in the distance, unable to be targeted, summoning Whisper Rubrum, Whisper Croceo, and Whisper Viridi. After some time the Harbinger uses Correction, destabilizing that section and forcing the party to run to another. They will rematch with the same three Whispers until some time has elapsed, at which point the Harbinger uses Intercession to destabilize the segment and force the party to run again.

On the next section, the party fights Rubrum on its own. Reducing its HP to zero staggers it and any damage done to it transfers to the Harbinger. After dealing a certain amount of damage, Rubrum is defeated. Aerith and Red XIII show up, but the Whisper Harbinger splits the ground, separating Cloud, Barret, and Red XIII from the rest. The three of them fight Croceo and Viridi. Same as Rubrum, reducing their HP to zero staggers them and damage done during stagger transfers onto Harbinger until reaching a threshold, at which point the Whisper is defeated.

Upon defeating both of them, Barret leaves the party while Cloud joins Tifa and Aerith to fight Rubrum, Croceo, and Viridi. Shortly into this stage, the three Whispers merge into Whisper Bahamut. Defeating it splits them back to their original selves. Defeating each Whisper reduces Harbinger's health, and once the third is defeated, Harbinger will fall within range and can be defeated.

Each of the three Whispers absorbs a different element in the first battle phase: Whisper Croceo absorbs Wind Wind, Whisper Viridi absorbs Lightning Lightning, and Whisper Rubrum absorbs Fire. When Rubrum is fought alone after a cutscene, it no longer absorbs Fire and its health is back to full. It can be inflicted with Silence Silence to stop it from using Firaga. When Whisper Rubrum is fought alone, defeating it staggers the Whisper Harbinger, and all damage to Whisper Rubrum applies to the Harbinger. If the player fails to defeat Whisper Rubrum during its stagger, it will recover half its health (Classic/Easy/Normal Mode) or all of its health (Hard Mode). When all three Whispers team up again, they are back to full health, ready transform into Whisper Bahamut. Defeating Whisper Bahamut splits the three apart and they resume their previously held HP.

Strategy[]

Any Elemental Materia Elemental Materia setups are best placed in armor over weapons. There is no point in attacking the Whispers in the first part of the battle before Whisper Harbinger uses Intercession, as they will be back in full health anyway. The player can thus instead block and avoid damage and conserve MP. Any ATB or limit break gauge gain is not reset when the battle moves to the next phase.

When fighting Whisper Rubrum alone, the party should use character abilities. Cloud can use Counterstance and guard while in Punisher Mode. After the Whispers trio has been defeated individually, they return, and after sustaining enough damage, they merge into a Whisper Bahamut, a fast flying enemy. It splits back into the three forms against which the strategy is the same as before: the party should avoid their attacks and reduce their HP to stagger them so they can damage Whisper Harbinger.

Ice Materia Ice Materia might be a good offensive materia to bring, as none of the three absorbs Ice Ice.

Hard Mode[]

Chakra Materia Chakra Materia and Prayer Materia Prayer Materia are reliable MP-efficient sources of healing, especially on Cloud who will be in every party. Healing Materia Healing Materia should be on at least one character, as Regen Regen can be cast to good effect. Elemental materia can be paired defensively on armor with Fire Materia Fire Materia, Wind Materia Wind Materia, or Lightning Materia Lightning Materia to absorb some spells as another way to heal. Although the party members switch often, their MP does not always replenish between battles.

Counterstance is a great method for dealing damage as Cloud, while Barret should use Maximum Fury at two ATB bars, Tifa should use Starshower and True Strike, and Aerith should focus on magic spells.

Behind the scenes[]

Its sword was deliberately positioned on its left arm instead of its right, and its Crimson Fury move was inspired by Zack Fair's Chain Slash Limit Break from Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-, but altered to look stronger and more vicious.[1]
