Tonberry is a Triple Triad card in Final Fantasy VIII used to play the minigame and for turning into items with Quezacotl's Card Mod. Tonberry is the thirty-second card in the inventory and the tenth Level 3 card.

Being a Level 3 card, the card values on the Tonberry are not strong, but its value placements may be useful for games that use Same and/or Plus.

Obtain[]

The Tonberry monster has a 3.5% chance to drop the card. Using the Card command on a Tonberry has a 93.7% chance to procure a Tonberry card when it succeeds. Tonberry King never appears in a battle where the player cards a Tonberry.

Any AI Triple Triad player who uses Level 3 cards has a chance of using Tonberry in a play, from where the player can win it in a card match.

When the party is on their way to the Timber TV Station, the player fights some G-Soldiers outside the Aphrora Pub who drop a Buel card. The rear exit of the pub is blocked by a drifter. Showing the Buel card to him has him gift a Tonberry card to Squall. There are also other ways to get past him, which rewards different cards in return.

Card Mod[]

A Tonberry card refines into a Chef's Knife with Quezacotl's Card Mod ability, the same as the Tonberry King card, making them interchangeable for card modding purposes. Chef's Knife becomes AP Ammo for Irvine's Shot (Ammo-RF), one of the best ammunition, which is also excellent against the Tonberry enemy itself, which the player must farm to lure out the Tonberry King. The knives also become Death (L Mag-RF), which is a great junctioning spell, especially for both Status Attack and Defense. It is worthwhile to collect Tonberry cards when playing Triple Triad in the early game for card modding purposes.
