GBA version?[]

I was wondering about where it saisthat it was rereleased for the PlayStation and Game boy advanced, but I was on nintendo.com, and it sais it's not going to be released on the GBA until February 5, 07. I'm alittle confused. --Parad0x 05:22 January 22, 2007

Are you sure you're not confusing it with the GBA version of Final Fantasy VI which is being released on that date? --Auron Kaizer 16:50, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

SNES Emulator version[]

How do I buy items or services in this game? In order to do so I have to turn on turbo mode and hold down "buy" and while doing that I have to hit the "up" button, what's the deal? It's the same with FFII(North American FFIV), or FFIV(Original Japanese version in a translated form.) Any answers for me?

I suggest a better emulator, if you have to jump through hoops like that just to buy things. You certainly don't have to in any emulator I've used, or in the non-emulated game.
Use Snes9x or ZSNES LReyomeXX 14:24, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

I think I need to try ZSNES I have gotten better results with problem ROMs in that program. Thanks.

More Differences with GBA Version[]

Just about everything except for the names of the characters have been changed between the SNES and GBA versions (my family has both). Would it be wiser to have notes noting the difference or a separate page altogether?

---The Klingon Jedi 08:15, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

If it were up to me, I'd base all the articles on the only good translation, the GBA one. But NO. --Auron Kaizer 14:23, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Shut up. The old translation is cool, man. Not only is it better for comic relief, but it also gave us The Power of Cheese. But TKJ is right. We should have a page like that. --Crazyswordsman 15:27, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
When I write articles for remakes, I use the most recent names (or the best in my opinion). While not everyone agrees with this, if they don't like it, they are welcome to change it themselves; this is a wiki after all.--Goldberry2000 16:41, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Well, yeah, I guess using Ptons, Ethrs and Lixrs is fun. Not to mention summoning Jinn. --Auron Kaizer 16:55, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
I'm going to assume that you mean Potions, Ethers, Elixers, and... a glass of Gin.--Goldberry2000 16:55, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Hehe, just finished "The Power of Cheese". I'm now very glad I never played any of the old FF translations. :P Diablocon 17:01, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
I just finished it also; I particuarly liked the summaries at the start of each episode reminding you that cecil is a terrorist.--Goldberry2000 17:14, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
It's not Ptons, Ethrs, and Lixrs. It's Cure1, Cure2, Cure3, Ether1, Ether2, and Elixir. --Crazyswordsman 17:49, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
To use FFIV language: Same..........spoony.........the thing! --Auron Kaizer 18:32, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Too bad I don't know how to access the secret files[]

Caves of Narshe has a great system, where you can change the language to match that of a certain release. --Crazyswordsman 22:49, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Hack 'em. Or do you have some kind of moral and ethics code? -_O --Auron Kaizer 00:05, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
I don't know how to hack. I do have a moral and ethics code, but it doesn't cover hacking. --Crazyswordsman 01:00, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Whoa. "Palom does more damage than Rydia"? Lies! Rydia can easily surpass Palom if she has the Bluff Augment (actually quite easy to get!), plus there are a lot more useful Augments for her that you can't even get with Palom in the party (Fast Talker FTW!). In fact, you don't even need Bluff to get higher potential damage than Palom; all you need is Bahamut (guaranteed 7k+). Kroq-Gar 23:01, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

"Red Wings" is not a Star Wars reference.[]

The name of the group in Star Wars was "Red Squadron". They would have likely fixed it in the GBA version of the game if that was what it was intended to be translated as.--MarioFanaticXV 05:15, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

FFT-job-summonerM

Even back in the original version of FFIV, they were referenced as the Red Wings. Although, the airship you obtain after rescuing Cid from Baron is called The Enterprise so you could have a possible connection to Star Trek there. InvalidMemory (talk) 04:09, September 22, 2013 (UTC)

Order of character mention in Story section[]

I know this will sound petty, but in the Story section, the order of the characters stated goes ALMOST by order joined. Is there any reason that the order cannot be switched to order of appearance? Rosa and Cid are both revealed earlier in the game, and obviously as a partly personal matter, I feel Rosa would warrant a mention closer to the male leads of the game given the importance placed upon her relationship to those male leads. Cecil is mentioned first, then Kain is mentioned, then Rydia, all in joining order, but then there is an aberration of mentioning Rosa before Tellah and Edward, which breaks the "joining order" pattern. As it stands, it gives me the impression that Rydia is taken as a more important character because the order does not remain faithful to joining order, and as far as I've seen it in most cases, the accepted order would be order of importance followed by order of appearance.

If the wiki itself has an established format on how to approach the order of character mention in the story section, or if a case can be made in favor of leaving it as-is, I will not pursue this any further. It is NOT a hot button, red alert issue to me, it simply seems like there is some bias in the order. If I do not hear anything, I will assume it is okay to alter the Story section to reflect order of appearance. However, if I DO hear something and it is decided to leave it at joining order, Tellah and Edward should be mentioned prior to Rosa, in keeping with the established pattern. A wiki that endeavours to be encyclopedic in nature typically aims to avoid bias, and the order as it stands implies at least some level of bias by not sticking firmly to one order pattern in when characters are mentioned. -- PaladinCecil 06:37, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Stretched DS section[]

Difference Section[]

That rerelease section is bulky. What if we create a new article titled "Final Fantasy IV version differences", and note the changes there? Seems to make since, since the SNES, GBA and DS releases all play quite differently from each other and have many differences. Drake Clawfang 23:26, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

Hm, I'm generally against subpages, but then I remembered about the [[Final Fantasy VI/Name changes|FFVI]] page. If we can put similar information to that there, and leave the rest here with template Main, would that suffice? The information does belong on this page, so I think most should be kept here. — YuanSaluto!Acta 06:50, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
Well I'm not sure we need that Name Change page, since the Magic and Relic lists cover the name changes. But FF4 isn't as simple as name changes - we're talking battle system overhauls, items and spells changed/altered, abilities removed or changed, and new extra features. As I said, to an extent the three versions all play as different games. Hell, even Wikipedia gave the DS release its own page. Not saying we should do the same, but the changes between each version seem a bit drastic to just put here as bulletpoints. Drake Clawfang 06:56, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
TBH, a name differences IS WANTED at very least. And from in-game checking too. Our FFIV enemies have incorrect PS names, I don't feel I have the time to check them all personally. We usually use GameFAQs, but having an on-wiki list of name differences can help, especially me when I need to translate to latest version.
Version differences can lay their too, but most version differences can stay on this page.  I Lion Heart I 15:08, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

DS Quicksave[]

There seems to be no mention of the Quicksave feature on the DS version, which you can use if you suddenly need to quit the game for some unforseen reason, or to charge the battery on your DS.

Similarities with 2001: A Space Oddysey[]

I've just reseen the film by Stanley Kubrick and I've found some similarities between its plot and the one of FFIV, there they go: - In FFIV the Lunarians came to the moon from another planet, and there, they observed the earthlings and stated their wish to live together when the earthlings evolved enough for this convivence. Kluya builds the Lunar whale and travels to the earth, where he teaches his white magic to the earthlings and falls in love with Cecilia, and he also has two sons with her: Theodor and Cecil. - In 2001 the Monoliths came, apparently, from Jupiter, and they are signs of inteligent beings other that humans. It reaches both the earth (The Dawn of Man) and the moon, where it is found buried (Zemus?). It seems that this "technology" (the monoliths) has something to do with evolution, since every stage of the humans has learned something important about technology in each contact (so, if the monoliths give lessons... are these the crystals or the very teacher lunarians like Kluya?), the homo habilis learns to use tools, the 2001 homo sapiens sapiens accelerates his conquer of the space... and... whatever happens in the ending hehe. - The Crystal Palace and the chamber of the mirrors where Cecil changes jobs are both very simmilar to the "mansion" of the final vision that the third monolith reveals. - In FFIV: The After Years the sleeping lunarians in the sleep room show some resemblance to the astronauts that where put on stasis on the Discover spaceship from 2001.

For your consideration for being added if you wish, in the Final Fantasy IV article (maybe in the trivia or in another section). Answer me as soon as possible.

Thanks for your time.

Yeah, reading that article, the whole semi-colon usage in lists...I've read so many books and magazines in my life, and I cannot ever recall seeing them used that way. No clue what that is, but it's the first I've ever seen it. Drake Clawfang 06:26, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
That is because most people don't pay any attention in English class and, as a result, don't know that that rule exists. The ugly truth is that most people, even those who write for a living, don't really know how to write. -98.21.70.114 06:38, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
Since you did bother to include a reference, I won't think you're talking out of your ass. I'm too lazy to go through the whole history and the matter seems to have been settled. I bet rephrasing was our better option. Faethinte audio 14:41, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

As a matter of fact I didn't. I'm new to this whole Wiki thing and didn't know better (hence why I didn't just whip up an article myself). Seems everyone but Edge and Fusoya have artwork. but regardless, its nice having them on the wiki, no matter how wierd they look. Though personally, i think Rosas is pretty cool looking. Trivia[]

"...In fact, Culex himself was purposely based on a boss that would be typical in the Final Fantasy series." Im gonna delete this if it cant be expanded upon. What is a "typical" final fantasy boss from the time? Because as far as I can tell, the Eldritch Abominations are as close as FF games get to having a 'typical' boss.

(Sorry for vague wording, trying to limit chance of spoilers.) 74.128.56.194 10:44, June 29, 2011 (UTC)

Version Confusion[]

Under the Gameplay section is this line: "Character shuffling was also a major problem in the game." This is a very bizarre line, as there was no ATB gauge initially. Nor was there shuffling; one had to "Defend" to skip a turn, or something equally pointless. The ATB bug is only on the Advance version, and seems to be more related to the game trying to use the bar that was in 6, where all abilities took the same amount of time, on a game where that was not the case.

I could be wrong but im pretty sure im not. 74.132.249.206 02:31, September 1, 2011 (UTC)

I am fairly sure IV has always had ATB. SNES, PS, all the way up to now. 79.69.198.68 22:42, September 1, 2011 (UTC)
It has. The PS version is pretty much a direct port of the SNES version and that has ATB, and nobody I know who played it as "Final Fantasy II" ever mentioned such a difference anyway. Bluestarultor Best-of Stellar Arena sigicon BSA 23:10, September 1, 2011 (UTC)

Lets Talk Atmosphere.[]

Ive noticed the in general all the FF games usually focus around a singular aspect which is not always immediatly clear. Its in the form of repeated themes/locations and the like. And there are clues.

Heres what I mean: Deserts are commonplace. Not only that, but cow/bull skulls adorn many of the regions. The houses tend to be done in a design specific to desert housing.

I wish I could do a better job explaining this but most of the stuff after this point is subjective. I think the music fits the desert setting fantastically, and the huge variations in homeland-type places (caves, castles, etc.) to the more unusualy zot type locations amplifies it.

All I can really do though is compare it to Final Fantasy 6, the entirety of which is set up to be an Opera (with the opera itself a thinly veiled allegory to the game's events.) FF5 didnt have such a theme, which is probably why it didnt do very well. Even FF1 had a theme.

Note: when I use theme i do NOT refer to music. 74.132.249.206 06:00, September 3, 2011 (UTC)

Naming Conventions ***MEGA SPOILERS***[]

Ive been working on the place names, to get them to reveal their secrets. Ive come a long way so far; the Four Fiends are named after Malebranche, demons in The Inferno section of The Divine Comedy; Cagnazzo, "Nasty Dog." Barbariccia, "Curly Beard." Calcabrina, "Grace Stomper." Rubicante, "Red-faced Terror." And Scarmiglione, "Trouble Maker."

Only a few locations remain not understood. I think I found where Damcyan's odd name comes from last night; A mother deity from Mesopotamia named Damkian. Keep in mind, "Cyan" was a mistranslation of "Cayenne" in FF6, and I see no reason why it wouldnt be the same way in FF4. Considering the sound, the name, the spelling of the name, and the culture it came from, and the fact that nothing else makes any sense, and it seems highly likely to be the case.

My current focus is, however, Zot. And I think I figured it out. There is an american comic book, called "Zot!" Now one important thing to remember: this was one of the first manga inspired US comics. But one aspect above all makes me think its the right thing:

"Using a portal created by Uncle Max, a link is created from contemporary Earth to the alternate reality of Zot. It is a retro-futuristic technological utopia, reminiscent of imagery from Golden Age SF, flying cars, robots and interplanetary travel are common and nearly all of its inhabitants benefit from peace, prosperity and a marked lack of conventional social ills. There also seem to be subtle differences in the essential nature of the two Earths, as on Zot's world events naturally favor the "good guys" in any conflict. Still, there are several commonalities between Zot's world and the "real" Earth, such as the careers of several popular musicians."

Oh yes. If you think about it for not very long, you can see exactly how the tower of Zot follows that description, in a way that would be highly unlikely by accident. Its also likely because the comic book's first run was 1984 - 1990. 1991 saw the release of Final Fantasy 4. A story about two worlds. Maybe more. And the seeming utopia of one, despite the major similarities (think Lunarian.)

Do I get the prize now? :D 74.132.249.206 06:47, September 7, 2011 (UTC)

Shop Article[]

I'm going to start making a list of shops article. Now, some questions before I do-

  • Are DS/Android/iOS prices the same, and does the same go for the PSP version? Oh, let's not forget the PlayStation version too.
    • Will we be renaming DS to "Remake?"

Really, all I need to know are the price ranges as we're lacking in covering all the versions. Hope someone can help me out here. EDIT- After finding some issues in more game tables, I made a forum post here to talk it out. Tia-LewiseRydia - Young battle 18:50, September 26, 2013 (UTC)

Bestiary is MAJORLY wrong re: GBA[]

I've noticed after going through the game quite a bit with a friend who is attempting a runthrough of the GBA version that the bestiary information is wildly incorrect regarding it. Reminder that the GBA version is a port of the Wonderswan remake, not a port of the original SNES version, and there are a TON of mechanical differences where if you were following the wiki for strategy suggestions with monsters and bosses, or even just attempting to use the elemental weaknesses and strengths listed, you will do very bad indeed. For example, Odin is NOT stalled by lightning attacks during his sword-up phase. Behemoths are now resistant to most summon attacks. There's a suggestion to cast Asura during the Dark Bahamut fight in order to have a chance to cast Protect Status...when Dark Bahamut strictly uses magic attacks. Dinozombies aren't apparently undead. etc etc. Admittedly it's been a while since I played the SNES version so can't speak for these strats regarding that version, but I can assure you that the 2D Bestiary info is filled with all kinds of inaccuracies when it comes to the GBA version, and needs a great deal of revisions.

71.227.119.99 01:09, April 24, 2020 (UTC)

The infobox says that the North American release was in November 1991, but the first paragraph says it is October 1991. Which is correct?
