Silence (沈黙, Chinmoku?), also known as Mute, is a recurring status effect in the Final Fantasy series. It is often inflicted by the spell of the same name.
Silence prevents the afflicted from using Magic and other commands that require speech, such as the Sing ability. It generally does not prohibit enemy abilities that do not cost MP. Silence is usually indicated by a speech bubble hovering above the afflicted unit's head, either with three dots ("...") inside it, or a red cross striking through it. Common ways of curing Silence are the Echo Herbs item and casting the magic Vox or Esuna. In some games, Silence lasts even after battle, however, it does not inhibit characters from saying their lines during cutscenes.
Appearances[]

Final Fantasy V[]
Commands that are unusable due to being afflicted with silence are White Magic, Black Magic, Red Magic, Time Magic, Summon, Sing, Dark Arts, and Spellblade. Blue Magic and spells cast through weapons can still be used as normal. The player can inflict silence with Mute and Silence spells, Silence Sword Spellblade and Mage Masher and Rune Bow weapons. Silence status is healed with some mixes and the Esuna spell.
Final Fantasy VI[]
A character inflicted by silence cannot use Magic, Dualcast, or Lore. The status is also removed at the end of battle.
Final Fantasy VII[]

Affected enemy abilities are marked as vulnerable to silence in their assessment. Silence is cured with Echo Mist, Remedy, and Esuna, and can be mitigated/avoided with Resist, Warding Materia, Psychic's Charm, and Ribbon.
Final Fantasy VIII[]
Silence disables the Magic, Draw, and GF commands. Rinoa is immune to this status during her Angel Wing Limit Break. The effect remains indefinitely until healed, even outside of battle. The afflicted has a speech bubble with "..." above their head. The player can inflict it via various ways, such as Siren Guardian Force and Silence as a spell and via ST-Atk-J. Silence is healed with Echo Screen, Esuna, and Treatment, among other methods.
Final Fantasy IX[]
Silence seals Blk Mag, Wht Mag, Blu Mag, and Summon commands. It is cured with Esuna or Echo Screen and prevented by Loudmouth and inflicted by the Silence spell. It is an effect in Mage Masher, Butterfly Sword, and High Mage Staff.
Final Fantasy X[]
Silence status disables Wht Mag, Blk Mag and Summon commands, but Lulu can still use her Overdrive, Fury and Yuna can still use her Overdrive, Grand Summon. Despite the status being known as "Silence", it does not deny the characters from actually speaking during battle. The player can inflict it with Silence Attack/Buster and Silencetouch/-strike, among other methods. It is healed with Echo Screen and Esuna, among other ways.
Final Fantasy X-2[]
Silence disables White Magic, Black Magic and Sing. Silenced party members do not speak during battle, or say their victory lines if the battle was ended silenced.

Silence disables the use of any abilities. Some fiends inflict the status with their regular attacks. The player can inflict it by reading The Quiet Life folio or by using the Silence Juice medicine. It can be healed with the Echo Nectar and Esuna Salve medicine. The auto-ability Silenceproof makes the character immune to the status.
Final Fantasy XI[]
Silence (静寂, seijaku?) can be inflicted by a wide variety of items, monsters, spells, and weapon skills. Players may even subject themselves to a ten-minute silence in Beadeaux to avoid a more dangerous curse. In addition to blocking the use of magic and song, silence prevents the practice of Ninjutsu. It does not inhibit abilities like Warcry, however, in spite of the implied use of voice. The dark dragon monster family's "song" abilities (Lodesong, Voidsong, Thornsong, and Nullsong) are also suppressed.
The duration of silence can be reduced by the Barsilence and Barsilencera spells. Bards and Scholars gain Resist Silence traits that offer additional defense. Silence can be dispelled by various means including Silena, Healing Waltz, Leviathan's Spring Water Blood Pact, and the item Echo Drops.
Mute (沈, chinmoku?, lit. silence), a more powerful version of silence, imposes the same limitations with a greater duration but cannot be removed by any conventional means. A researcher in Port Windurst will pay players to show her this rare affliction and subsequently dispel it.
Omerta (オメルタ, Omeruta?, lit. Omerta) status, presumably named for the notorious Mafia code of silence, is yet another variation on Silence status; this one is inflicted as part of the Pathos of Alzadaal on those who dare venture deep into the Ruins of Alzadaal to take part in Salvage. It is removed by leaving the ruins, or by obtaining and using a Praecipitatio Cell (in this case, not even dying will help).
Final Fantasy XII[]
Silence makes one unable to use magicks and persists after KO. In the original version, being silenced makes one unable to partake in Quickenings, but this was changed in the Zodiac versions. The player can inflict Silence onto others with the Silence and Silencega spells, and the Mage Masher dagger. It is healed with Vox and Esuna, though one with Silence cannot use magick to heal themselves and can use an Echo Herbs or Remedy instead, or touch a Save Crystal. The Rose Corsage and Ribbon accessories immunize against Silence status.
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings[]
Silence is a status effect that prevents a unit from casting magicks.
Fran learns the ability Silencing Arrow at level 35 and it inflicts Silence on the target. Ramuh's signature move Judgement Bolt inflicts Silence and deals lightning damage to foes in range. Raiden's attack Silent Storm also inflicts Silence and deals lightning damage to one foe.
Final Fantasy XIV[]
Silence is a status effect that prevents the usage of Spells. In most cases, it can be remedied by using Echo Drops or by utilizing spells or abilities designed to remove detrimental status effects such as Esuna.
Final Fantasy Tactics[]
A character inflicted with Silence has a balloon with "..." above their head.
The character cannot use the following abilities and skills:
- White Magick
- Black Magick
- Time Magick
- Mystic Arts
- Summon
- Speechcraft
- Sky Mantra
- Nether Mantra
- Bio
- Ultima
Bardsong is not disabled by Silence, nor are any of the Templar's Spellblade attacks.
This status effect can be added with Bad Breath, Bewitching Gaze, Biora, Aphony, Grand Cross, Sylph, Forbidden Dance, Quiescence, and Silence. Magick Ring, Gold Hairpin, Cachusha, and Ribbon can all be equipped to prevent Silence. Silence lasts for 36 ticks.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance[]
Aside from magic, Silence prevents the use of a Paladin's Parley and a Hunter's Advice. Dragoons are also unable to use Wyrmtamer and Bangaa Cry, although they can still use their elemental Breaths. Ninjas are unable to use Ninja Skill, with the exception of Throw, while silenced. Assassins, however, are unaffected.

Silent is a status effect that disables a target from casting any spells. Ashley can cast this from using Grimoire Muet and later on through the Sorcery spell Silence for 7 MP. Attacking the "Head" of a target and reducing its status to "Dying" automatically causes Silent on the target. Other abilities include Ashley's Chain Ability Dulling Impact.
It may be removed by moving to another room, or have another spell cast on the target. Even under Silent status, Ashley can cast a spell if he uses a Grimoire. Equipping Silent Queen gem to a Shield increases chances to evade this status by 30%.
