Horn inhabited by the spirit of a dragon. Makes the effect of the Jump command continuous.

Description

Dragon Horn is a relic in Final Fantasy VI. It causes the Jump command to hit 2-4 times across random enemies, an immense upgrade to the ability, making it very turn-efficient and an effective means of dealing damage. Because Jump can only be equipped when Dragoon Boots is equipped, Dragoon Boots and Dragon Horn form a natural pair. As Jump deals much more damage with spears, the relic is most natural for Edgar and Mog, who can equip spears natively.

Betting the Dragon Horn at the Coliseum pits the player against a Gorgimera for a reward of a Gold Hairpin.

Obtained[]

Dragon Horn can be found at Phoenix Cave, or dropped from Great Dragon.

Dragon Horn can also be obtained from the Dragon's Neck Coliseum by betting Celestriad, Ward Bangle, Gold Hairpin, or Safety Bit. However, only a maximum of two Dragon Horns should be obtained, and each of these relics is more useful for other party members in certain circumstances, meaning this is generally not necessary.

Mechanics[]

Jump with Dragon Horn can hit up to 2-4 times, where the attacks after the first can hit any random other enemy. If the weapon has an added ability that initiates with Attack, it will only proc on the final hit against the last enemy affected.

Use[]

Dragon Horn provides an immense upgrade to the Jump ability, meaning that it will still take longer to charge, but deal much more damage than a normal attack. Though the damage is still below that of Master's Scroll, it is nonetheless extremely effective at dealing damage, especially with a powerful spear equipped and with a strong Strength stat on the user. As Jump normally has defensive benefits (from hiding the user from battle for its duration), combining these with a great offensive potential is worthwhile.

Edgar and Mog are both excellent beneficiaries of Dragon Horn. In both cases, Jump does not detract from their native command ability (Tools for Edgar, Dance for Mog) and can even be more reliable and useful than either in most situations. Though the pair of Dragoon Boots and Dragon Horn leaves them without a defensive relic, one should not typically be needed as Jump will allow them to avoid most enemy attacks anyway.

Other characters cannot fully benefit from Dragon Horn, despite the ability to equip it. Though characters such as Sabin, with a high natural Strength, could in theory benefit from Dragoon Boots and Dragon Horn together, Sabin's inability to equip spears natively means that if he is attempting to use Jump, his choice is between equipping Merit Award to equip spears, or to equip Dragon Horn for the greater damage. Dragon Horn may typically provide a greater damage output boost overall than Merit Award, but the potential will still be below Edgar and Mog, who can use all three; as such, unless building a strategy around summoning Quetzalli to cause all party members to Jump, other party members are better off investing in other sources of damage.

Dragon Horn synergizes well with imp equipment, which grants characters maxed-out defenses and attack power when under the imp status. The status also restricts their ability to use magic or special commands, making this normally detrimental. However, the character under imp can use the Attack command, which becomes the Jump command with Dragoon Boots and the weapon of the Imp equipment—the Impartisan—is a spear. As such, an imp equipment build synergizes perfectly with the Dragoon Boots and Dragon Horn, allowing the characters to still deal great damage with Jump. Imp equipment is universal, meaning character is viable for this strategy, though it is of circumstantial use and should only be used if the character never plans to cast spells. This set-up can work well in the Coliseum.

Etymology[]

In the Final Fantasy series, Jump is associated with Dragoons, an armored job associated with dragons, either as riding dragons or using dragons' abilities.
