The Legend of Zelda: Titan Rising is the twentieth installment in the franchise, and the fourth instalment on the Nintendo Switch, including original games and remakes. The game is set to be released in 2021 for all regions and is being developed by Amuza.
The story follows Link on a quest to save Hyrule from Ganondorf's successor, Cyn. The Gerudo forces have become super powered following an earthquake which separated all of the regions of Hyrule from each other. From the abyss surrounding each region rises the evil aura of Ganon, which the Gerudo have harnessed as a weapon. By waking the Titans, Link can close the abyss and cut off the Gerudo's connection to Ganon.
Story[]
Prologue[]
Outset[]
Hyrule has been living through a hundred year age of light, uninterrupted by the forces of a dark evil.
Princess Zelda and Impa arrive on the small Diyon Island by boat, hoping to find new warriors for the Hyrule Imperial Guard. However, unknown to the public, Zelda and Impa are actually looking for the reincarnation of the hero of the land. Diyon Island has only recently become a part of Hyrule, so the townspeople are still resistant to their new Princess. After running training sessions for the Diyonian people, Zelda thinks she has found who they are looking for. Later, Link is called upon to give an offering to Zelda as thanks for visiting the island.
Zelda opens up to Link about her true reasoning for coming to Diyon Island. She tells him that he may be the only person who can stop the rise of the Gerudo Forces and their leader, Cyn. Zelda and Impa take Link to the Hyrule mainland and he bids farewell to his sister.
Once on the mainland, Impa tasks Link to explore the nearby Monank Forest and find the tallest tree of the forest. If he truly is the chosen one, it will be revealed to him within the forest. Link finishes Impa’s mission and comes across the Tree of Life. The spirit within the tree tells Link about the prophecy of a boy from the woods slaying a man from the desert. Zelda knows of the prophecy, and wants to find the hero as soon as possible before the Gerudo forces get too strong. Before Link leaves, the spirit within the tree awakens one of the sculptures etched into it’s side. The creature introduces herself as Oolla and joins Link on his quest.
Impa greets Oolla and Link as they return from the forest. They ride to Hyrule Castle together to reunite with Princess Zelda, but on the way, Link notices something odd. They ride across a bridge that separates the land. Inside the bottomless abyss, a strange aura passes underneath them.
Once inside Hyrule Castle, Zelda tells Link about the state of Hyrule. After the Earthquake of Din, the regions of Hyrule broke apart and started floating independently of each other, creating the Abyss of Bad Dreams. Deep within the earth, a mysterious aura began to pour out. Ganon’s aura. The Gerudo have learnt to harness the aura as a weapon and have become incredibly strong.
However, Zelda knows a way to reunite the regions of Hyrule. She tells Link to awaken the six Titans, giant sculptures that are etched into the landscape of Hyrule. Zelda stares out across Hyrule Field to Faron to see one of the Titans lying flat. The Titan blends into the landscape, making it indistinguishable from any ordinary mountain. If the Titans are awakened, the land will connect again and cut off the Gerudo’s connection to Ganon.
The Missing Link[]
Speaking with Impa inside Hyrule Castle will reveal that Link has lost connection to all of his previous lives. Impa will take Link down into the Dungeon of Hyrule underneath Hyrule Castle. At the end of the dungeon is a Goddess Statue. Link placing his hand on the statue will reconnect him with all of his previous lives, unlocking the Choir of a Thousand Voices. Link can now sing songs with the choir to affect the land and people in a number of different ways. Impa will teach Link the Song of the Titan, which can be used to awaken the Titans at the end of a temple.
Cave of Bad Dreams[]
The first time Links passes over The Abyss of Bad Dreams, Ganon's aura that pours out of the ground will pull Link down into the abyss. Link will awaken in the Cave of Bad Dreams, where a small shrine rests. Walking up to the shrine will reveal that Link can actually make contact with Cyn through Ganon's aura. Link and Cyn now stand within the same room, but are unable to harm each other. This cave will become a point Link will return to many times throughout his journey as Cyn desires to meet with Link. There are a total of seven Bad Dreams that can be unlocked throughout Link's quest. Oolla will inform Link each time a Bad Dream is unlocked, and a large pillar of Ganon's aura will rise out of the abyss surrounding Hyrule Field. Flying into the pillar will teleport Link to the cave. All seven meetings are detailed below.
- The first time entering the cave, Cyn explains what the cave is. He puts his arm through Link's chest to prove they can't hurt each other. Cyn tells Link all the ways he plans on defeating Link so he can then storm Hyrule Castle and overthrow the royal family.
- The second time entering the cave, Cyn will transform the cave to look like they are standing at Ganondorf's funeral. Cyn explains that after Ganondorf had been slain, he was given a burial in the Eldin region. Cyn tells Link that the Earthquake of Din was actually Ganondorf's doing. In Ganondorf's rage, he caused the great earthquake that separated all the regions of Hyrule, explaining why his aura is pouring out of the ground.
- The third time entering the cave, Cyn will teleport the two of them onto a cloud high above Hyrule. Cyn thinks he was a little too intimidating in their earlier meetings, so he decides to sit down and introduce himself. He reminds Link that all of Hyrule is at stake, and that he wouldn't want to fail all of its people.
- The fourth time entering the cave, Cyn shows Link his first memory. Link is teleported into the desert during a rough sandstorm. A woman holding a baby walks in front of them. As Cyn reminisces on his childhood and his mother, Link watches as the woman places the baby on the front door of a house and leaves, never to return. Cyn asks Link if he has ever met his mother.
- The fifth time entering the cave, the cave will be transformed into the setting of Cyn's coronation. He is heralded by all of the Gerudo as the first man born in one hundred years. Cyn feels the intense pressure of the prophecy on his shoulders, but promises to rebirth the Gerudo power. He asks Link if anyone believes in him as much as the Gerudo believe in Cyn.
- The sixth time entering the cave, Ganon's aura shows the greatest fears of Cyn and Link. It is revealed that Cyn is afraid of failing the Gerudo and being berated by Ganon. Link is then transformed into an old man and teleported to Diyon Island. Cyn is surprised to learn that Link's fear is to reach the end of his life and die as a nobody. Through this vision, he learns that Link actually has a sister on Diyon Island.
- The final time entering the cave, Cyn teleports the two of them into a vision of the Sacred Realm. Inside the Sacred Realm, Cyn asks Link if he noticed something strange when he was in there awakening the Titan of Light. It is revealed that one of the pieces of the Triforce remains in the Sacred Realm. This means that one of Zelda, Link, or Cyn is not the real bearer of the Triforce, and that one of them is not the reincarnation of their former selves.
Call of the Titans[]
Titan of the Forest[]
The Titan of the Forest is the Titan that Princess Zelda looks out over during the story cutscene when arriving at Hyrule Castle. It is the only Titan that is automatically added to the map after the outset main quest, the rest have to be located on their own. This means that the Faron Titan will be the first one completed by most players, and it acts more as tutorial to the process.
Arriving at the Titan of the Forest will introduce players to the Fortune Teller of Hyrule who is under attack by Moblins. After saving her, she will tell Link’s future for free, and inform him that the required key items for entering the Titan are with the three species of the forest: the Monank, Deku and Skull Kids. Visiting each of these species hometown will reveal the way that the impending war with the Gerudo have affected their lifestyles after the earthquake. The Deku live in fear as they have done for one hundred years. The Monank live in an oblivious world of overt happiness, and the Skull Kids experience sorrow over their lost lives at the hands of the Gerudo, the ones who caused the Lost Woods Fires.
The fears of the Deku stem from the belief that they are always being watched by the Gerudo. They think this because they betrayed Ganondorf and stopped working for him after he was defeated by the Hero of Time. The Deku King will ask Link to protect the town for one night. While staying in Deku Village, Link will also help set up the bonfire that is a nightly ritual for the Deku to dance around. Link makes the largest bonfire the Deku have ever had. With the extra light from the larger fire, everyone sees eyes looking down on them from all around the edge of the Spiral Undergrounds. It turns out the Deku's fear was justified as the Gerudo watch them every night during their ritual. The Deku King gives Link the Digging Claws to aid him in taking down the Gerudo. Link chases the Gerudo soldiers to the Arms & Armor Palace, where he uses the Digging Claws to defeat them all and ensure the Deku don't have to live in fear anymore.
While returning to the Twin Bridges, the Monank will be extremely excited to see Link again. The happiness of the Monank comes across as they are in denial of anything bad ever happening in life. Exploring the village, Link will find the only sad Monank. While speaking with him, a group of other Monank will ambush them and take the sad Monank away deeper into the Monank Forest. Link chases them down to find the Great One's Haven. Inside, any Monank that feels sad is taught to feel happy. Link acquires the Light Baton and frees the Monank.
At the Scarecrow Foothills, a lone Skull Kid weeps as it has forgotten the life it used to live before it was transformed. Link can make the Skull Kid happy by decorating the lone scarecrow that doesn't have any decorations. Link can find three pieces of Kokiri garb in Skull Kid Village which can be placed on the scarecrow. By doing this, the lone Skull Kid will remember her past life as a Kokiri child. This will also open up a secret pathway into the earth where the Forgotten Fortress resides. Inside, Link acquires the Clawshots.
With the three key items required to enter the Titan of the Forest in tow, Link returns to the Fortune Teller of Hyrule at the Titan of the Forest. The three key items are used to scale the Titan and find the entrance. Inside, Link encounters many puzzles and enemies, culminating in a fight with Stalghoma, the Undead Arthropod. After the spider is defeated, the spirit of the Titan will speak to Link and thank him for awakening her.
Titan of Fire[]
Upon arriving in Eldin, Link treads the path up Death Mountain to the Goron City. He is surprised to find that the city has been flooded and now acts as a hot spring for elderly Zora. Link learns from the Zora’s that following the Earthquake of Din, the Gorons split off into three tribes, all on different sides of Death Mountain. However, each tribe believes they are the last of their species alive and that the rest of them perished during the earthquake.
Link hikes his way to each of the Goron tribes to inform them they are not the last of their kind. Unfortunately, the Goron’s have become incredibly sheltered and unkind to intruders. They never leave their villages anymore for fear of setting off another earthquake, and they keep outsiders out of their tribe as much as possible. They do not believe Link when he tells them there are other tribes alive. The only thing that would convince them is if Link would show them the relics of the past.
In Gorokno, only the village elderly will speak to Link. Speaking to them all will point him in the direction of the Thunderdome. Inside will be the Iron Boots relic. In Ky-Goroni, none of the Gorons will speak to Link. The solution is to sneak through the town to find the entrance to the Goron Mines. Inside he will find the Goron Magnet relic. In Elgor, only the children speak to Link. Playing their games will reveal where the Tomb of the Ancients is and inside Link finds the Titan’s Mitts.
With all three of the Goron relics in tow, Link still cannot convince the Gorons to believe that their are other Gorons out there. Using the relics, Link climbs to the summit of Death Mountain that separates all of the Goron tribes. At the summit, he uses the Titan’s Mitts to throw boulders down and forge a path that connects all three of the Goron tribe villages together. Finally, they are reunited.
Speaking with the Gorokno elder’s again will reveal that the Titan of Fire resides inside Mount Din. Link scales the mountain and can spelunk his way down to get inside. Link fights Cicero, Din’s Guardian Angel to finally awaken the Titan of Fire and close the abyss surrounding Eldin.
Titan of Water[]
Link finds the waters of Lanayru have become poisoned by Ganon’s aura, making the area very treacherous. From the poisoned water rises mutated creatures of Hyrule.
When Link arrives at Zora’s Domain, he learns that many Zora’s have disappeared into the fog that arises from the poison water. While the lowly Zora’s plea for help, the Royal Family has been totally incapable and unwilling of helping the people. The Royal Family’s inability to help save their people creates a lot of derision in the region, with many people questioning if the family could protect them if the war were to break out.
Link heads to the base of the Titan of Water where a group of Zora’s pray to the Titan to help purify the waters. When he arrives, beautiful singing rings out across the lagoon. Two Zora children are lulled by the singing, and rush into the mysterious fog emanating from the poison water. The singing turns into a horrifying yell of some monster, and the Zora children are never seen again.
The Zora ask Link to help save the children and he heads into the mysterious fog. Link follows the sound of the beautiful singing to the Edge of the World, where he rescues the child and finds the Ice Wand. Next, the singing leads him to the Coral Reef Maze where he rescues the second child and finds the Weightless Boots.
With the children saved, Link can now navigate inside the Titan of Water using his newly acquired items. Inside, he finally locates the source of the beautiful singing, Miagani Ono, the Hideous Siren. The monster uses its beautiful voice to attract its prey, before revealing its true beastly appearance. Once it is defeated, Link awakens the Titan, whom closes the abyss surrounding Lanayru, cleansing the waters.
Titan of Light[]
To arrive in the Necluda region, Link must climb the Dueling Peaks to be able to safely glide over to the floating terra. At the tip of the peak, Link and Oolla notice that they can see the Titan of Light submerged in the ocean. As they head down to Hateno Village, they find North-Joint Harbor, a store which teaches Link how to build rafts.
Link builds a raft and heads out to the submerged Titan, where a spirit speaks to Link and asks him to pass the two Hero’s Trials. The first one up in the Palace of Winds is where Link finds the Whirlwind. The second is on Lightscale Isle where Link finds the Timeshift Necklace. After doing both of them, Link can swim through the Titan to reach a portal that takes him to the Sacred Realm.
Inside, Link is guided by the mischievous spirit of the realm. After solving all it’s riddles and playing all it’s games, the spirit finally lets Link awaken the Titan and leave the Sacred Realm. However, Link is ambushed in the portal out and must fight his way back into the real world. Finally, back in Hyrule, the Titan awakens and closes the abyss surrounding Necluda.
Titan of Spirit[]
Upon entering the Hebra region, Link and Oolla notice the strange blue streaks of light flying through the air. The blue light gathers in a way as if it is trying to direct Link somewhere.
They decide to follow the light which takes them to the Heart of the Blue Wind. Inside, Link finds the Heaven’s Touch and places his hand on a crystal, shooting a large beam of blue light into the sky. He continues following to the Eyes of the Blue Wind. Inside, Link finds the Spirit Vessel and places his hand on a crystal, shooting another large beam of blue light into the air.
The two beams of light come together to form The House of Spirits at the peak of Hebra Mountain. This is where the spirits of all the people who have passed away in Hyrule gather. The house has recently become overflowing with the people slain by the Gerudo Forces. These spirits are unable to pass on as they are paranoid about the impending war. Hyra, the longest resident and the leader of the house, guided Link there in the hopes he could save them and make the house liveable once again.
After explaining his mission to Hyra, the creature pinpoints the location of the Titan of Spirit for Link. He heads there with the Heaven’s Touch and Spirit Vessel. After trekking through the Titan, Link defeats the mysterious beast XY and awakens the Titan, closing the abyss surrounding the Hebra region.
Titan of Shadow[]
The Titan within Akkala is very plain and easy to see. It is a notable landmark in Hyrule as it is the only Titan that actually stands up straight. Heading in the direction of the Titan takes Link to Tarrey Town, where all of Hyrule’s outcasts and thieves end up. It is a scrappy town with a bad reputation, so walking through town with great armour and weapons is a sure-fire way to start a fight.
Link learns that the people of Tarrey Town climb up the Titan for sport. Recently, it seems that all the winners of the climb end up going missing. Link decides to win a race and find out what happens to them. To join the climb, Link first needs a Spinner and a Lens of Truth. A mysterious climber decides to help Link out and show him where he could find them. He heads to Loch Moon Fish Monastery and the Bottom of the Well and grabs both key items needed.
After winning a race to the top of the Titan, the mysterious climber will appear at the top with Link. The mysterious climber will reveal themselves to be Suratiru Ma, the Gerudo Assassin. She opens a trap door that plunges Link deep inside the Titan. While travelling back to the top to escape, Link learns that the Gerudo have been kidnapping the best climbers to train them into Gerudo soldiers.
When Link finally makes it back to the surface, he fights and defeats Suratiru Ma on the head of the Titan. This finally awakens the Titan of Shadow who closes the abyss surrounding Akkala.
False Prophecy[]
After awakening all of the Titans, Link returns to Hyrule Castle to meet Princess Zelda. He learns that Cyn has kidnapped his sister, Aryll, from Diyon Island and is holding her hostage in the Gerudo Valley.
Princess Zelda reminds Link about the prophecy of a boy from the woods slaying a man from the desert. She shows him the Triforce of Wisdom that resides inside her, and believes that the Triforce of Courage is split between him and Aryll. This is why she believes Cyn kidnapped Aryll.
Link makes his way through Gerudo Valley and to Cyn’s Chapel that resides on the tallest peak. It is a small building at the end of a very arduous trek.
Inside the chapel, Link finds Cyn and Aryll. He taunts Link, reminding him that one piece of the Triforce remains in the Sacred Realm, and that one of them is an imposter in this story.
Link defeats Cyn, and with his dying breath he says. ‘The boy killed me. As the prophecy foretold. That means I am the true wielder of the Triforce… Right?’
Cyn dies, failing Ganondorf, the Gerudo people, and still questioning whether this was his destiny or whether he was born into a role he could never fulfil.
Link and Aryll hug on the peak of Gerudo Valley surrounded by the remains of the chapel.
Postgame[]
After defeating Cyn, the entire region of the Gerudo Desert will open up. It is a harsh and barren wasteland where the most fearsome enemies reside. There is also a number of new side-missions involving the Gerudo people, where you can learn more about their expectations of Cyn, and how they were rebuilding their society to prepare for war.
Gameplay[]
The Legend of Zelda: Titan Rising plays similar to its predecessors, mixing puzzles, action, adventure, battling and exploration. The structure of the game takes most inspiration from Breath of the Wild, in which players traverse a fully explorable world where they are mainly hindered by their stamina, skill and inventory. Most of the world is accessible to player's immediately, however some locations cannot be traversed without the necessary key items found inside dungeons.
From the outset of the game, the player is free to explore anywhere in Hyrule. The final boss can be faced at the very start of the game if the player wishes, although it is not advised to do so. Instead the player is encouraged to awaken the six Titans which will decrease the final boss's power, or complete missions to strengthen Link before the final battle.
The story of the game is split into seven different sections, one part for each Titan that the player must awaken, as well as the endgame to reach the final boss. To complete each region, the player will have to follow a story segment in which they will pick up two or three different pieces of equipment on their way. These items will always be necessary to complete the Titan dungeon associated with that region. For example, the Titan of Spirit stands tall in the Necluda region. It has become a popular sport to see who can climb the Titan the fastest. However, to partake in these races and continue the story, Link has to find the equipment required to climb the Titan. As such, the player will have to explore Akkala and talk to the people of Tarrey Town to learn how to acquire these items, then win a race up the Titan to then be able to enter its dungeon.
The food system from earlier entries returns in Titan Rising. Alongside it comes the new feature of hunger. While Link will not be negatively affected from being hungry, when Link is full he will be unable to consume more food or elixirs. This prevents players from being able to endlessly regain hearts in tough battles by hoarding food. A recipe book can also be unlocked which will clearly state all the recipes Link has previously cooked.
Raids also make their first appearance in the series. A raid is a smaller dungeon that is tackled by four different heroes. These can either be computer AI or other players that you connect to through Nintendo Switch Online. The raid will usually have a mission attached to it such as 'collect as many Luminous Stones as you can' or defeating a boss at the end. The four players will take on the same color scheme as the Link's in The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords.
Oolla[]
One of the game's new mechanics takes form of Link's new partner, Oolla. A member of the Oocca race, Oolla was one of the etchings made into the Tree of Life. The spirit within the Tree of Life revived Oolla and gave her the task of helping Link on his journey.
Oolla follows Link around by flying overhead. She is very intelligent, knowing the history of all of Hyrule, allowing her to help inform Link on the many different areas he explores.
At any time, the player can switch to Oolla's top-down field of view in the sky. In this state, the player can fly above the ground and perform many functions. Oolla's abilities play a heavy role in puzzle-solving throughout the game. Some of her abilities include going to areas inaccessible by Link, picking up items that are out of reach and passing by enemies undetected. Oolla also acts as the fast-travel mechanic, picking up Link and flying him to his destination.
Weapon Enhancement[]
Enhancement is a new skill available in the series that allows player's to upgrade their equipment by combining two or more different pieces together. For example, each weapon has three different stats: durability, power, and speed. A weapon like a Boko Club with low durability can be upgraded to have high durability by enhancing it. This would require combining the Boko Club with other weapons that have a high durability, like a Thunderblade. Secondary weapons that are used to enhance the base weapon are removed from the inventory after the enhancement process.
This can be done to armour, weapons and bows. Each piece of equipment will now have a rank out of five stars that is indicative of the stats that piece of equipment has. Enhancing a single piece of equipment too many times will cause its durability to break down faster than usual. Equipment can be enhanced at the Blacksmith found in a number of settlements.
Magic Meter[]
The magic meter returns to the Zelda series after being absent in the last couple instalments. The magic meter acts adjacently to the stamina wheel, but they are both quite integral for world traversal. While running, climbing and some key items will lower Link's stamina, other other key items will use up Link's magic meter. This includes items such as the Spirit Vessel, Whirlwind, and Magic Tunic. The implementation of the magic meter means that players cannot simply spam these key items in battle to win easy victories against enemies. Instead the player will have to plan out their use of these magic consuming items alongside the use of their weapons to have success.
Unlike the stamina wheel, the magic meter will replenish at a much slower rate. Whilst food will always heal hearts, elixirs will now always refill the magic meter. Some ingredients will also grant Link the affect of temporarily increasing his magic meter, as well as making it replenish quicker. Link can also purchase Magic Canisters to extend his magic meter.

Timeline placement[]
On the canonical timeline, The Legend of Zelda: Titan Rising takes place on the Child Era, exactly one hundred years after Twilight Princess when Ganondorf was executed by the Hero of Light.
The Gerudo legend foretold that every hundred years, a Gerudo male would be born. Cyn is the next Gerudo male after Ganondorf. Over the last hundred years, the Gerudo tribe went into hiding and left Hyrule to rebuild their faction and live a simpler life. Cyn has since reignited the Gerudo power and sent them on a mission to overthrow the Hylian monarchy.
Many changes in Hyrule have occurred since Twilight Princess. Most notably, the abundance of new structures in the kingdom. During the hundred year Age of Light, there were no major threats or wars in Hyrule, meaning the people were quickly advancing as a species in technology and architecture. This lead to a plethora of new villages and buildings that were soon abandoned for even newer structures.
Many instances of evolution between Twilight Princess can be seen throughout the game. For example, the monkey race residing in Faron Woods have evolved into intelligent beings known as the Monank and formed their own home in Monank Forest. The Deku, long thought to have gone extinct, return to the surface of Hyrule after having lived underground for centuries to avoid evil. As such, they have become far less aggressive creatures then they used to be.
Major Events[]
- The Expansion of Hyrule: Following the Twili Invasion, the rule of Hyrule was expanded to include new areas to protect more people. Many villages were in ruin as they did not have the resources to fight back against the Twili. From the expansion of Hyrule; Akkala, Necluda and Hebra were three new provinces that were formed.
- Earthquake of Din: A strong earthquake that struck the entirety of Hyrule. It hit the Eldin province the hardest, altering much of its geography. From the earthquake Mount Din formed, a mountain that rival's Death Mountain in height. It also lead to the dispersal of the Goron species, who have now split into three different tribes with their own unique culture.
- The Abyss of Bad Dreams: Following the Earthquake of Din, each region of Hyrule broke apart and they now all float above the earth independently of each other. The abyss that leads deep down into the ground is known as the Abyss of Bad Dreams. Out of the abyss rises a dark but powerful aura. This actually turns out to be Ganon's aura.
- The Lost Woods Fires: For one full moon straight, a large portion of the forest was slowly burning to the ground. The fires led to the destruction of the Kokiri Forest. Many Hyruleans tried to help stop the forest from burning to the ground but were subsequently transformed into Skull Kid's. Those transformed have adapted to their new life and formed the Skull Kid Village.
- Monank: A race of happy-go-lucky monkeys that have carved out their own piece of Hyrule within the Faron province. Within the last hundred years, the Monank have formed their tribe and become intelligent.
