Samuel "Sam" Sterns started as a lowly janitor in a chemical research plant, mocked by his co-workers and disconnected from his family thanks to his slow-wittedness. However, one day, one of his canisters he was hauling suffered a crack, exposing Sterns to the radiation inside. This granted Sterns vastly increased intelligence and near-perfect memory recall. Deciding to take revenge on those who mocked him, Sterns became the megalomaniacal supervillain known as the Leader and became the arch-enemy of the Hulk.
