Solar Mario Bros. is a 2D platforming video game in the Mario series, developed by Tricom and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance console. The game features Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Daisy traveling across a series of islands to stop a new villain from trapping the world in eternal sunlight.

Gameplay[]

Gameplay somewhat resembles prior 2D installments of the Mario series, with the primary difference being that Solar Mario Bros. is more of a Metroidvania game where Mario and his friends navigate six small islands to collect Shine Sprites scattered around. Each island has its own environmental features, and as the player explores, they may find items on one island that can help them out on another.

It is also the second 2D Mario platformer to have a health meter, the first being Super Mario Bros. 2 / Super Mario USA. However, unlike the prior Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine health meters, the health meter in Solar Mario Bros. only has three hit points. However, the game introduces the Life Mushroom, which grants the player three additional hit points when they pick it up.

Solar Mario Bros. also introduces the Twirl manuever, which would later reappear in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. U, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Pressing the Select Button allows the player to open their Island Progress menu, showing a map of the island they're currently on, alongside the number of Shine Sprites they've found on said island and throughout the game overall. A player can also use this menu to swap their character if they are playing alone.

Up to four players can play Solar Mario Bros. with a single cartridge using the GBA Link Cable. Co-Op Mode allows them to travel the Solar Bond Islands together, while Battle Mode has them compete to collect the most Shine Sprites or Coins within the time limit.

Story[]

After the events of Super Mario Sunshine, Mario and his friends have decided to take another vacation, this time to the mystical Solar Bond Islands. But the native Princess Wisteria cuts their plans short when she starts gathering Shine Sprites spread out across the islands, seeking to use their power to make the sun shine on Mushroom World forever - no rain, no cold, and above all else, no night. Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Daisy begin their journey to find the Shine Sprites before Wisteria does, talking with the islands' residents as they go along.

Characters[]

Playable[]

All four playable characters play pretty much the same, allowing you to pick your favorite with no major changes to gameplay.

  • Mario: The older brother in red, Mario's an adventurous defender with a youthful spirit.
  • Luigi: The younger brother in green, Luigi may be a bit of a coward, but he's willing to fight to the end with his friends.
  • Peach: Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach is a cheerful damsel and a natural-born leader.
  • Daisy: Empress of Sarasaland, Daisy's got just as much spunk as she's got looks.

Support[]

Enemies and Bosses[]

Items[]

  • Coin: Collect these to buy items from shops all around the islands. Collecting 100 gives you an extra life.
  • Heart: Gives you one hit point.
  • Mushroom: Refills your health meter.
  • Life Mushroom: Refills your health meter and gives you three extra hit points.\
  • 1-Up Mushroom: Gives you an extra life.
  • Fire Flower: Lets you toss fireballs. This can be used to attack enemies or light torches and lanterns.
  • Cape Feather: Grants you a spin attack to deal with enemies or float through the air. After getting a running start, you can glide by jumping up and then alternating between the left and right buttons on the D-Pad.
  • Frog Suit: Allows you to swim faster in any direction, but slows you down on land unless you're carrying something.
  • Metal Mushroom: Turns your character chrome, giving them the ability to walk through water and across lava and slime for about 20 seconds.
  • Shine Sprite: The game's primary collectible. They're spread out around the Solar Bond Islands, and collecting enough of them throughout the game gives you access to more areas.

Areas[]

  • Isle Aragosta: A peaceful, grassy island, and Mario and friends' first destination.
    • Tikini Village: A small oceanside village of wooden huts, home to the native Tikini tribe.
    • Sunshine Prairie: The lush plains of Isle Aragosta.

Facts and Trivia[]

  • This project was conceived by NeoNio99 (tbc) as his take on the concept, "What if there was an all-new main series Mario game on Game Boy Advance?" It was also initially created as a challenge for himself to create and finish a Mario game within one week prior to the release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, but he eventually ended up feeling too personally attached to it enough to want to take his time with it instead.
  • Tricom, as a developer, was conceived as a way for Nio to post projects on the wiki that would theoretically release prior to the foundation of Niobium Moon Studios in 2012.
